8834.0. "I can't get dxchpwd to work from a non-priv'd account" by ALFSS2::HEFFEL () Fri Feb 14 1997 07:53
Alright , tell what obvious thing I'm missing here... :-)
I have a cusomter who has reported this under 3.2f. I have
reproduced exactly under 3.2c and similiar behavior under 4.0.
He wants to run dxchpwd from a non-priv'd account for users
to be able to change their passwords using the GUI interface.
The man page says:
"If dxchpwd is invoked without any options, it is assumed that the current
user's password is to be changed...."
which implies that you should be able to do this from a non-priv'd account.
However, when you do, the app comes up but you also get a pop-up
that says "insufficient privileges".
The permissions and ownership of the executable look reasonable to me:
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root bin 49152 Jun 17 1996 /usr/tcb/bin/dxchpwd
It works from root.
Under V4.0, from a non-privileged account, the app comes up but
you get another pop-up that complains "User unknown, cannot change password".
If you run it from root it works perfectly of course. Permission and ownership
look fine there as well:
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root bin 49152 Nov 16 06:30 /usr/tcb/bin/dxchpwd
A search of COMET and notes reveals NO ONE reporting this problem
before. I can't believe that after all the time that 3.2c has been out that
this is the first time that anyone has tried this. But on the other hand I
can't see what my customer and have done wrong.
Is this really broken,? Or Have we missed something obvious?
(And what about Nell?)

| It's definitely completely broken in V4.0 and I qar'd it back in
September. osf_qar 48685 and 48687. Apparently this was not dxchpwd's fault.
It's actually a bookreader buglet that caused this.
