8832.0. "sendmail-problems" by MUNICH::CUZUM () Fri Feb 14 1997 05:25

Hi mail-wizards,

can anyone of you give me some hints on this problem:

User albert ([email protected]) from Munich tries to send mail to user
[email protected]. The aliases-file on the sending
host contains the entry: 'john-frederick.luy:lui'. This is wrong,
because there is no account for 'lui'. There's only a 'luy' on the
sending host. So if albert sends mail to john-frederick.luy there is no
possibility to deliver this mail and albert should get a returned mail. First,
on albert's host the sendmail daemon runs with the standard options
(sendmail -bd -q15m -om &) and albert doesn't recieve any returned mail,
telling that his mail could not be delivered. When the sendmail daemon
runs with the option -v (sendmail -v -bd -q15m -om &), albert recieves,
as expected, the returned mail.

Customer insists that he wants to recieve a returned mail, so he can
notice type mismatches in his aliases-file. Why sendmail -v works correct
and without -v no returned mail is delivered?

We checked the mail.log file on the receiving host and on the sending
host. We checked all existing aliases-files and sendmail.cf and couldn't
find anything wrong.

The sending system is runs dUNIX V3.2c. There is a central mail
distributor (SUN) which administers a central aliases-file which
contains the entry:john-frederick.luy@host1 (host1 - the v3.2 system,
which sends the mail)

Let me know, if you need more information. I, for myself, should be very
satisfied to hear, why sendmail-daemon works in another way, when run
with the option -v.

Thank-you in advance.

Regards,

Corina
