8771.0. "3.2C to 3.2g to 4.0a Problem" by OTOOA::16.154.224.14::otoa01::tsue () Mon Feb 10 1997 11:08

Hi,

I've been upgrading 3.2c machines to 3.2g, then to 4.0a Digital UNIX. Five
of six systems did the dual upgrade without a problem. One AlphaServer
2000 however does not want to upgrade very smoothly. After I do the setld
on the 3.2g upgrade, the system still comes back saying it is at 3.2c.
I've rebuilt the kernel and have checked to see if the 3.2g subset have
been loaded properly and they have.

Is there a file the system uses to tell it what version it is at? Is there
a work around to this problem? I really need to get my customer's system
up to 4.0a as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Tony

    How are you telling that it is at 3.2c still.. While it is booting
    up off the kernel. What if you boot off of genvmunix?

    You can do a strings /vmunix | grep "(Rev" to see what the kernel
    says that it is. THere are files in /sys/conf , ie. version files
    that will affect uname.

8771.2UERF and V4.0a Upgrade Tells meOTOOA::ras017p07.kao.dec.com::tsueSales SupportWed Feb 12 1997 11:299
Hi Sandy,

Two ways I can tell that the system thinks it's still 3.2c. One is on the
boot log file that you can look at using UERF. The other is when I try to
run the 4.0a upgrade, it comes back I'm at 3.2c and I need to move to 3.2g
or 4.0.

Thanks for your help,
Tony

    what the strings tell you about the genvmunix?

    in /both /genvmunix and /usr/genvmunix (if one is there)

8771.4Result from STRINGSOTOOA::16.154.224.14::otoa01::tsueWed Feb 19 1997 09:1214
Hi Sandy,

Here is the result of the string command - sorry for the delay

# strings /vmunix |grep "(Rev"

Digital UNIX V3.2C (Rev. 148); Wed Feb 5 1997 EST 1997

So it seems that it still thinks it's 3.2C.

Thanks,
Tony

8771.5subsets installed?RHETT::LACORTIThu Feb 20 1997 09:203
    also what does setld -i show. Does it show the 375 subsets installed?

    Sandy
8771.6375 Subsets are loadedOTOOA::16.154.224.14::otoa01::tsueThu Feb 20 1997 10:579
Hi Sandy,

Yes, all of the 375 subsets are installed. Even the genvmunix comes back
with the 3.2c when run against strings. Even if we try to do the hupdate
procedure again, the system comes back with only the options we haven't
loaded.

Thanks,
Tony
8771.7maybe forgot a step?SMURF::TAPPANTue Feb 25 1997 10:085
    Are you sure you didn't forget to move the new vmunix to / after the
    doconfig? Check section 4.3.3.3 in the installation guide and follow
    the instructions in B. Upgrading Software Only.

Nope, did that.

8771.9another suggestionRHETT::LACORTITue Feb 25 1997 13:295
    well remove all the XXXXXX375.lk files and try to load them again.
    If you can get a genvmunix from 3.2g then you can boot off it it
    and create a new kernel.

8771.10How do I remove XXXX375.lk files?OTOOA::16.154.224.14::otoa01::tsueTue Mar 11 1997 09:498
Hi Sandy,

How should I remove the XXXX375.lk files ie. setld -d OR rm them? Once
I've done that, where do I find the XXXX375.lk files? Is there a number I
can reach you at so that I can get clear this up as quick as possible.

Thanks,
Tony Sue
