8692.0. "tu0: address filter table is full, sorry" by FURKA::"[email protected]" (Miguel Mena) Tue Feb 04 1997 08:05

Hi,

has anyone got any idea, why I could get this message:

(from /var/adm/messages)
Jan 31 16:25:49 bronze vmunix: tu0: address filter table is full, sorry
Jan 31 16:25:50 bronze last message repeated 7 times
Jan 31 16:27:18 bronze vmunix: tu0: address filter table is full, sorry

what is wrong with tu0.

Btw, the system is a AlphaServer 4100 5/400 with
tu0 = DECchip 21140-AA: Revision: 1.2, Digital UNIX v3.2g.

Thanks and best regards,

  Miguel

What software is your running? Are you using DECnet? DCE? IP Multicast?
Anything else?
8692.2IP multicastFURKA::"[email protected]"Miguel MenaTue Feb 04 1997 09:43174
The customers (Swiss Exchange, EBS) software uses "Isis Distributed Toolkit".
Isis does lots of ip multicasts. See the softwares log file at the end.
Is there a problem with Hash/Perfect filtering mode ?

They never had problems before with the "DECchip 21040-AA: Revision 2.3"

Thanks,

  Miguel

This is just a guess...

Early 21140 chips had a problem in that their multicast hash tables didn't work.
This meant you were limited to the number of addresses in the perfect
filtering mode (16 - physical - broadcast - all nodes - loopback == 12).

The older chips could which to hash filtering which made limit completely
dependent on the driver.

My guess is that the tu driver is not checking the version number and assumes
all 21140s are broken.
8692.4hmmm ...FURKA::"[email protected]"Miguel MenaWed Feb 05 1997 05:3110
Thanks,

do you know, if this is going to be implemented someday for the 21140 chip ?
and, do you see any relation between the message from tu0 and the messages
from the applications log file ( setsockopt: No buffer space available ) ?

Regards,

  Miguel

I think this was since in pass 2.0 of the 21140 (DE500-AA) though the driver
doesn't check the revision of the chip.

Yes, it's the cause of the setsockopt.
8692.6The errata still lists it as broken...SMURF::GILLUMKirt GillumWed Feb 05 1997 11:445

    Actually, it doesn't look like they've fixed the problem. Perhaps the
    AC variant of the 21140... I'll check into it some more. The driver
    currently assumes that any flavor of the 2114x doesn't work.

8692.7netrix.lkg.dec.com::thomasThe Code WarriorSun Mar 23 1997 13:353
Looking back at the errata, only the 21140-aa and -ab (pass 1.x) version of
the 21140 have the problem. the 21140-a[cde] (pass 2.x) do not have the
problem.
8692.8SMURF::GILLUMKirt GillumWed Mar 26 1997 10:298

    Yes, I just heard back Digital Semiconductor on Monday, and they
    believe that they've fixed the bug for the 21140-ac (and later,
    hopefully).

    We're working this problem with the support group, and we'll probably
    be trying out a new driver later this week.
