8684.0. "CAM ERROR on SOFT REBOOT, PATCH or flex cable" by GENIE::MUKHERJEE () Mon Feb 03 1997 07:44

Hi,

Following up the thread 7746, I was wondering if anyone has information about a fix for this. I read that there
was a patch but that it did not work in all cases.

We are looking at a 8200 where a system disk (rz29b) with the /usr fs is advfs mounted. The disk is in a 356 BA
wide box.

If a hard boot is made, the system comes up perfectly. However, when a soft reboot is made, the LSM
initialization part hangs with the error message about CAM ERROR on Bus1 target 1.

I have heard from a collegue that he experienced this problem with RZ26L in wide boxes as well. He discovered
that the box had a modified flex cable in it (ie split, modified older cable) instead of the newer manufactured
flex cables.

Any ideas if this might apply to the rz29b's as well?

BW, the OS is UNIX 3.2.C and I am unsure about the Firmware levels.
The system was installed last June 1996 and the firmware levels were revised at that time.

Thanks for any comments,
Arjo

Hi, Steve.

There are people all over the world who are interested in the answer to this.

We've got a turbolaser exhibiting similar symptoms. It doesn't have LSM, so the
CAM errors don't appear to cause any problems, (i.e., it finishes booting, and
there are no apparent problems once it's up and running) but we'd like to know
what's going on.

With my original post I had not meant to disturb anyone. Granted that the problem is not
mine, I was curious to see what others had experienced. I was just trying to see whether
anyone else in the field had experienced such an event and if they had managed to discover
a fix. I had origianally posted some time ago in the other thread, but since it was an older
thread, I assumed it had been overlooked. Please excuse my rashness.

Since it appears that this problem has been escalated, it will be solved and I will drop
this. However, I do look forward to reading about the fix in this notes conference.

In case anyone else out there is interested in comparing their error situation with what
has happened here, I include the lines that appear after the soft boot. Mind you, there are
no mentions of this in /var/adm/messages.

....
ADVFS: using 9341 buffers containing 72.97 megabytes of memory
Starting secondarycpu 13
Starting LSM in boot mode
cam_logger: CAM_ERROR packet
cam_logger: bus 1 target 1 lun 0
ss_perform_timeout
timeout on disconnected request

[the last 3 lines are repeated]

Thanks for escalating this,
Arjo
