Why doesn't the setld installation script for 'mtools' automatically
create the /dev/fddrive link? I wanted to see if a QAR had been
entered on this, but I'm not sure what component "mtools" is under.
This is a minor pain in the neck for my partner right now.

| Not sure this was the answer you're looking for, but it's the right question.
The component for mtools is CMD_FILEMG
I also see mtools qars assiigned to PACKAGING, MANPAGES and RELNOTES.

| Jeff,
Thanks for the QAR reference. I disagree with it though. I don't see
why the setld installation script couldn't create the link for
the user.
just one more thing contributing to user's perceptions that Digital
Unix machines are difficult to get configured correctly. There are too
many things like this that need to be done by hand.

| Actually, maybe OSF_QAR 47610 was sent to the wrong people who closed it as
"no plan to fix". Maybe the CMD_FILEMG component is more appropriate.
I agree that the problem is real for a user and affects perceived quality in
what we deliver on CD. I ran into the same problem when I downloaded the
mtools-3.0 software distribution from gatekeeper. The default in the source code
didn't appear to be correct for "osf_4_0". I think I ended up changing it in the
source code myself and rebuilding (try "/dev/rfd0c" ?).
Anyway, it should be the goal to be able to "plug and play" on Digital UNIX as
easily as it is on some of the competitor's platforms.

| Another one is the subset dependancy; one would have thought that after
churning out releases after releases, somebody would have gone in and
fixed the setld "needs another subset" barf.
