8629.0. "managing users and load on a server" by TAV02::GLASS (Yossi Glass, 882-3254) Wed Jan 29 1997 08:17
One of the departments in an Israeli university is going to purchase a
server which will server manu users.
Here is an email they have sent us regarding their needs for managing users:
-----------------
In a university environment there are all kinds of users with different
needs and often differing views as to the priority of their own work. In a
fairly heavily loaded system it is necessary to limit the size and length
of user jobs, to limit the number of simultaneous jobs per user, and to
force users to run heavy computations in the background using some kind of
batch queuing system. I don't know how much of a problem this will be for
our departmental server, but I am interested in knowing what facilities
exist for this kind of management if and when the need arises.
-----------------
Other than telling them to use a tool like LSF, what will you tell the guy?
Thx,
Y.

| Part of this requirement will be met by the addition a "class scheduler" to a
future release of Digtial UNIX. A class schduler allows you to control cpu
utilization among process/users/jobs. You can do thinks like "make sure
Joe gets no more that n% of the CPU."
