8616.0. "UNIX Licensing..." by HGOVC::NANDAN () Tue Jan 28 1997 06:27

    This is regarding UNIX licensing.

    Can someone please clarify -

    a. If a system just has just the Base Lic, what does it mean ?
Does it mean that only user 'root' can log on & how many such
       connects are permitted ?
    b. Usually if the UNIX is installed the "OSF-USR" license gets
installed. What type of connects does this allow ? I understand
it is 2 users. But is this besides the 'root' login, or does it
       include it.
    c. If a UNIX 8-user license is used, how many users can actually
log on ? Again does it mean 8 users, other than 'root' ?
    d. If additional users with the same username log on does it count
as an additional login ? (My thinking, is that it does).
    e. Is the "console" user treated in any way different in terms of
licensing,i.e the user logged on to the console, treated any
differently from a user logged on to a terminal.
For example, if the customer has a 8-user UNIX license, apart
from the console display, how many other users can log on ?

We have a customer who is extremely concerned about what he would
be paying for and would like to know exactly how many users can
use the system, for each type of license that he buys.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi

Most servers currently include unlimited user licenses with them.

Is this system recently purchased?

regards

Eric

re: .0

The number of users counted by LMF is the number of active (logged-on) non-root
user-ids. The same user-id logging on multiple times counts only once.

How the user connects to the system does not matter (console and rlogin both count
the same).

The Base License allows root logins plus 2 users.

An 8 user license would add to the 2 users from the base giving a total of 10.

Root is always allowed to log in by LMF even if LMF does not find a valid
base license. After all, there needs to be some way to get on the system and
load the licenses. If there is not a valid base license then only root can
log in.

Thank you for the very clear explanation.

Sorry for the delay in my acknowledging your response, since I came
back to this note after a long time.
