8595.0. "UUCP TO DIFFERENT PLATFORMS" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Ahmet Harcar) Mon Jan 27 1997 06:45

We have a potential customer who has a very large network. He use different
Unix platforms such as Sun,HP etc. I want to learn if there is any problem to
connect these different platforms with UUCP over TCP/IP in a X.25 network.
I'm waiting your suggestions as soon as possible.
Regards.

8595.1It shouldn't be too hard ...APACHE::CHAMBERSThu Jan 30 1997 11:1022
This is something I've done several times, and if you can get the right
information from each vendor, it should be relatively easy, and should
work well.

The main problems that I've seen are:

1. Some vendors will tell you "Sure, our UUCP supports TCP", but they
neglect to add "You have have to special-order the version with the
TCP protocol support". Then they hit you with an extra charge for an
"upgrade" to get what you thought you had ordered.

2. There are often subtle differences in how you tweak the config files.
If you can get a working example from each vendor, it should be easy.
You always have to put entries in the Systems (or sys) file, of course,
but the values of fields 2, 3 and 4 vary. Sometimes these can be just
"TCP - -"; sometimes you need to say "TCP TCP TCP". Sometimes you need
to state an explicit protocol "TCP,t - -". You may or may not need to
add a line to the Devices file for a "TCP" device. The rest of the setup
is usually the same as for DIRect links.

But try to get a "working example" from each vendor. It'll save you a
lot of time trying to guess the subtle syntax differences.
