This problem concerns Informix OnLine 7.20.UC4 under D Unix 4.0A and doesn't 
happen when kernel asynchronous i/o are used

Detailed solution 

onmode -ky	# stop instance

enlarge rt parameters in sysconfigtab

aio-max-num=4096
aio-max-percent=5 or 10

reboot the system

unset KAIOOFF	# remove from environment
oninit		# start instance
