PRODUCT: Fast EtherWORKS PCI 10/100 (DE500) Controller

OP/SYS: OpenVMS Alpha, Versions 6.2 and above

SOURCE: Digital Equipment Corporation

PROBLEM:

After installing a DE500 controller, it will not send or receive
packets. This occurs regardless of how EWx0_MODE or LANCP is set.

packets. This occurs regardless of how EWx0_MODE or LANCP is set.

DIGITAL RESPONSE:

The DE500-AA controller is not currently supported on OpenVMS Alpha.
Support for this device is planned for a release of OpenVMS Alpha
following V7.0.

WORKAROUND:

Swap the DE500-AA with a DE500-XA controller. The DE500-XA will work
with OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 and higher.

ANALYSIS:

To determine if a DE500-AA or DE500-XA controller is installed in your
system, use the following SDA commands:

     $ ANALYZE/SYSTEM
     SDA> SHOW LAN/FULL/DEVICE=EWB ! where EWB is the DE500

               -- EWB Device Information 17-OCT-1996 17:49:37 --

LSB address 80DDE300 Driver code address 80C83600

Then, use the LAN status block address for the next examine command:

     SDA> EXAMINE LSB+1150
     80DDF450: 0000FF00 02000011 "........"
                         ^^^^^^^^ <-- DE500-XA with 21-40673-01

The table below lists the available DE500's and their device ID's:

Controller/MAC Chip Device ID displayed by SDA
     ---------------------- ---------------------------
     DE500-XA with 21-40673-01 Dev. ID = 02000011
     DE500-XA with 21-40673-02 Dev. ID = 02000012
     DE500-AA Dev. ID = 02000020

The DE500-AA is the forthcoming variant of the DE500 that supports
industry standard (Nway) Auto Negotiation. It also includes support

system, use the following SDA commands:

     DE500-XA with 21-40673-02 Dev. ID = 02000012
     DE500-AA Dev. ID = 02000020

The DE500-AA is the forthcoming variant of the DE500 that supports
industry standard (Nway) Auto Negotiation. It also includes support
for an optional remote boot ROM and has some slight performance
improvements.

It is expected that the DE500-AA will eventually replace the DE500-XA.
