It is generally more efficient to get this kind of information only once. That's why it is done at open time, rather than needing to check for every read if it needs to determine density. As for handling density selection when it is opened in the middle of the tape, it never needs to do that. The ONLY time it needs to determine density setting is at BOT. The density setting will not change in the middle of the tape, so it remembers the setting after having determined it at BOT. Therefore, when the tape is opened in the middle, no SPACE/REWIND commands are done. [Posted by WWW Notes gateway] |
