I have a customer, ADP, who is very interested in having optical
support in the base OS. They would like to use the optical drive
RWZ52 just like any other disk (sort-of) and do not have a need
for the products that provide the optical driver (nor do they
want to pay the cost of those products).

Don't ask me to put a revenue flow on this capability because
I can't but they plan to buy lots of Alphas -- with or without this
support. It would be nice to have though or they may direct to Sony
and get the drives (and maybe a driver which of course they would
need).

I thought ADP already had a contact in our product requirements group?
Requests for base os support should almost certainly go through that channel...
(Wasn't the entire V4.0B release mainly for ADP? It seems like there is
some disconnect here...)

Please contact the UNIX product managment since adding optical
support to the base is being considered for a future release.
Any input on the value of this to Digital would help them
evaluate this option. Until then, use of the optical driver is
still restricted as per its SPD.

Opening the optical driver to general use costs Digital money to
qualify devices and provide support. It hasn't been clear that
it would add enough value to justify those costs.
