| Customer has an AlphaServer 400 4/166 with (according to the console) a Digital
S3 TRIO 864 Graphics Controller, Digital UNIX 4.0A, SRM firmware 4.6.
X comes up in 640x480 16 colour VGA mode; sizer -gt says VGA. This is bad
enough, but Netscape Navigator refuses to start because it doesn't have enough
colours.
We tried putting in stuff from .2 (in particular, adding "-screen 800 -vsync 60"
to /usr/lib/X11/xdm/XServers (it's running Motif, not CDE)), but it made no
difference at all. This system has previously run Windows NT and, most recently,
OpenVMS, which have apparently had no problems getting the higher resolution.
Since the information in .2 doesn't work, how else do we get more
colours/resolution?

To work 'round the netscape issue have it use a private color map by:
"netscape -install"

7281.6 | S3v864 not supported on Digital UNIX | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Paul Grist | Tue Feb 18 1997 09:59 | 18 |
| Hi,
I'm afraid that although the 864 ships on NT and works
on VMS, it is not supported on UNIX. The s3 support in
UNIX is for the s3trio64 card. We have a default VGA
driver which will run any standard VGA in the maximum
standard VGA mode of 640x480x16colors, but that's the
best you'll get for s3v864. We had a test driver that
ran under the V3.2 stream, but it was consiously disabled
in v4.0 in favor of s3trio64 support which has to ship
on UNIX packaged systems.
For more info on Digital UNIX graphics HW support see:

| Re .5: this workaround won't work. Netscape won't work with only sixteen
colours, whether it has a private map or not.
