| Unicensus is a wrapper around sys_check created by MCS...they add
some MCS specific data, call sys_check will slightly different arguments
to collect a few more things, and eventually they want unicensus to be
able to send it back to them...you would need to get the MCS folks
to tell you more of what they are planning.

7178.27 | rev .98 | KITCHE::schott | Eric R. Schott USG Product Management | Fri May 23 1997 16:09 | 10 |

Rev .98 is available...it adds ability to get swxcr controller
firmware revs, -escalate switch for problem reports, network
enhancements, and pointers to the external ftp patch kits.
Note, the binary tools should be re-copied, as the sys_check.tar or
tools.tar files contain the program to gather swxcr firmware revs.

Rev .99 is available...it (or later versions) is required
for problem escalations to USEG (see blitz dated May 30).
It also includes -nohtml switch to only output text.

PROBLEM:
In the past, there were two tools (checkit and sys_check ) which
collected data on hardware, software, system configuration, and system
activity logs for use in isolating and diagnosing problems on Digital
UNIX systems. Though the tools have differing functions, there was some
overlap in the data gathered. In addition, having two tools presented
some confusion around when to use what tool.
RESOLUTION/WORKAROUND:
Effective June 3, 1997, there is one data gathering tool. This tool is
sys_check. Starting at Version .99, sys_check combines the
functionality of previous versions of sys_check and checkit. The UNIX
Support Engineering Group (USEG) still requires the data previously
collected through checkit for escalations to USEG engineering.
However, it is now gathered via # ./sys_check -escalate.
When performing general data collection on a single customer system
where the information is needed in an HTML format, please use
sys_check without any option, for example ./sys_check > file.html.
Once run the HTML file can be mailed or copied.
When you need data for an escalation to DIGITAL UNIX engineering,
start the sys_check script and include the "-escalate" option. This
option performs file collection on a customer's system and places it
into a tar file. The resultant tar file( /tmp/escalate.tar ) can be
provided with the escalation.
example with option : ./sys_check -escalate
You can get the latest version of sys_check from either:
guru:/usr/guest/misc/osf/public/sys_check.tar
or
http://www.zk3.dec.com/useg/problem_mgr/sys_check.tar
The .tar file contains both the sys_check script, and some additional
binary utilities that sys_check uses to collect Disk I/O, Scheduler
statistics, and console variables.
Copy the sys_check.tar file to your root directory. After getting
it to your system do the following :
# tar xvf sys_check.tar
# ./sys_check -escalate
OTHER COMMENTS
Note that sys_check is now an official engineering tool, owned and
supported by USEG. We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of
Eric Schott in creating and maintaining this tool. Note, however
that all future comments/enhancement/requirements (or bug reports)
must be directed to USEG via Ed Riopelle at kamlia::riopelle or
[email protected]. Our goal is to provide a single tool
of system data collection for DIGITAL UNIX.
