Did anyone figure out an alternative solution or a workaround to this problem?

One of our customers is implementing a new set of data centers in four (perhaps
five) European countries. Each datacenter will consist of a dual AlphaServer 4100
system cluster. One of the applications running on the cluster requires the users
to log onto the system. We need enhanced security, and we wanted to use NIS to
distribute the passwd, group, and prpasswd info, and now are stopped dead in our
tracks, because NIS does not solve the problem. This looks like a real blocking
factor to the cluster project, so I need a workaround and preferably a solution fast
(1 cluster will be shipped to the customer and should go live mid-March).

As to a solution - does it help when more people QAR this?

As to workarounds, are there ways to circumvent the problem, e.g. by putting the
authorization files on shared disks and nfs mounting them, or by changing the slave
system to master, ... I know these solutions can be tricky if implementable at all,
but we really need a way out.
