2575.0. "Return a limited number of dds entries" by VAXRIO::63230::vaxrio::abreu () Mon Mar 17 1997 17:44

Hi,

I have a customer running ALL-IN-1 V3.1 with remote dds. The queries
are delaying a lot of time but in fact they return many entries. They would
like to know if there is a way to tell ALL-IN-1 or Message router to return a
limited number of entries (for example 100) or to return what they get in the
first 5 minutes for example. I mean , it would return the first 100 entries or
it would return the maximum number of entries he could get till 5 minutes.

Is there any way to do this ?

Such a feature was discussed a few years back, but never implimented.

They can do this with X.500 (assuming they upgrade to ALL-IN-1 V3.2).

This was why checks were put in Teamlinks etc to try and stop queries
    from being too "open-ended".

As Dave says, if you use X.500 (either the DAP or LDAP flavour), you
can specify that queries terminate after a given elapsed time or a
    given number of entries returned.

2575.3teamlinks checks ? VAXRIO::63230::vaxrio::abreuTue Mar 18 1997 12:028
Hi Dick,

What kind of checks were implemented in Teamlinks ? I have users who
wait like 20 minutes to have results returned from dds searches in Teamlinks
(like 2050 entries returned). If there is a way to limit the entries returned
in teamlinks or the time , they will love it.

The types of checks that Dick is talking about are 'up-front' checks to
try to keep the search parameters from being vague. For example, DMW has
a setting that requires at least N characters be specified for Surname.

BTW, 20 minutes sounds excessive; they should probably review their
configuration (number of TL servers, where they are located, where
DDS WS-nodes are located, whether the MR VAX is undersized, etc...)

(One 'dumb' thing I've seen a number of times is for folk to cluster a
VAX with an Alpha via Ethernet, with the MR files NOT local to the VAX)

Hi Dave,

Twenty minutes is really too much but this problem doesn't seem to be
related to Message Router because if I make the same search from the
server ALL-IN-1, the results (2000 entries) are returned very fast.
This long time is just for teamlinks users.

Some time ago, I opened a call in Colorado to know if they have any
idea how to limit this number of entries to teamlinks or limit the time but
there wasn't. So that the customer is living with this problem because they
don't want to use the aida logical name that asks for a minimum number of
characters to surname. This would for sure decrease the number of resturned
entries.

If you have any ideas what could be done to improve this time, let me
know that I'll try.
