2573.0. "Lots of unseen messages, how to get rid of them quickly?" by VELI::KORKKO (Veli Krkk @FNO, 879-5512) Sat Mar 15 1997 09:16

I just came to office. As it is saturday, it seemed strange that my workstation
was very busy (judged on basis of the noise from disks). Appeared that I
am receiving lots of mails. In fact, my unseen count was already well over
13000! And more was to come as there was in the MR queue (for my single user
system) at least thousand more mail) and tracking to the originating system,
there were a few thousand batch jobs just about to fail and then send their
failure report to me...

Needless to say, I killed all those jobs and am currently cleaning the up the
mess  on the application system.

But how do I get rid (in a clean and fast way) of those 13000+ messages with
title "HELPLINE Batch file error"?

Seems that ordinary EM, I with selecting all messages with mentioned title and
ALL XD is probably not a very fast way...

Suggestions appreciated.

2573.1weekend, other things to do -> let's do it hard wayVELI::KORKKOVeli Krkk @FNO, 879-5512Sat Mar 15 1997 20:1016
        I had to go away for a few hours (to a customer site) and
        decided to this in a simple way. Just EM and index all messages
        with the title beginning Helpline, then ALL XD. It might have
        taken a few hours. By the time I was at home and able to login
        from home to my system, all 13000+ messages were already gone.

        Obviously EW took some time too, but I spent that hour by going
        out swimming. I've used already DFU to compress OA$SHAREnnn
        directories also.

        Interestingly enough, in the originating system there were
        something like 20000 tempfiles on a single directory. I
        cleaned those with a small C program (basically doing
        $delete/reverse *.*;*, just /reverse of course does not exist).

2573.2ALL-IN-1 handled this load very smoothly by the wayVELI::KORKKOVeli Krkk @FNO, 879-5512Sat Mar 15 1997 20:147
        By the way, if I had my mails going to Exchange (like many
        nowadays do), I just wonder how long delays this 13000+ mail
        storm to me travelling DEC:.FNO.AKSELI -(vmsmail) - mrgate ->
        HSKRTR --- STKMTS --> RDGMTS --> PMDF --> intranet/smtp --> reo
        Exchange server ---.... fno exchange server would have caused?

    I'm pretty sure you can use the CAB JANITOR function on the INBOX if
    you have the privileges. That skips the wastebasket altogether. Of
    course it still takes a while. . .
