2563.0. "DECnet/OSI required for X.500 access?" by NQOS01::voyager.lex.dec.com::wav14.pko.dec.com::isler () Mon Mar 10 1997 23:16

In order for ALL-IN-1 v3.2 to access X.500 directory (on the same VMS
system, initially a VAX), do I need full DECnet/OSI installed and licensed?

I have not worked with X.500 recently, and in the past, in order to do
RFC1006, for example, one only needed to install a few subsets of
DECnet/OSI.

The only place I saw DECnet/OSI as a pre-requisite for ALL-IN-1 v3.2 is for
XMR, in the ALL-IN-1 v3.2 upgrade guide for MB400 and X.500.

2563.1I'm pretty much sure you need itIOSG::STANDAGEMy hovercraft is full of eelsTue Mar 11 1997 09:3510

    Hi,

    Yes, I believe you'll need DECnet OSI, as certainly you need to have
    installed the OSI Application Kernel (OSAK). You should probably check
    the X.500 conference to be 100% sure (FORTY2::X500_SUPPORT).

    As Kevin says there is certainly a dependency on much of DECnet/OSI,
    the DAP protocol is layered on it. This is true even if you use TCP/IP
    as transport.

    Whether you need all of DECnet/OSI, I'm not sure. I don't know how it
    is packaged. The X.500 SPD just says:

    SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
    ...
    For OpenVMS
    DECnet/OSI V6.2 for OpenVMS
    ...

You also need DECnet in order to manage the DSA.

btw, the X.500 conference is not exactly as Kev suggested - it's FORTY2::X500

2563.4What if ALL-IN-1 on different machine?NQOS01::voyager.lex.dec.com::wav14.pko.dec.com::islerTue Mar 11 1997 21:497
Thanks,

What about,
If I have ALL-IN-1 on a different system than X.500, do I need DECnet/OSI
on the ALL-IN-1 system? My guess is no, but have to make sure.

2563.5Still *some* X.500 locally....IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeWed Mar 12 1997 08:063
    Even if you have X.500 installed on a different machine (in fact that's
    how IOSG:: is set up) then you still need the X.500 stubs installed
    locally. Don't they need Phase V ?

    Graham's right, I don't think you're going to be able to ignore OSI !
