2541.0. "Office Server V4 (Nimbus) Status" by IOSG::ECHRISTIE (Eileen Christie) Wed Feb 26 1997 14:00

This topic will be used to give progress information on Office Server V4,
codenamed Nimbus.

Nimbus starts where ALL-IN-1 V3.2 left off. Although it's a different
product, ALL-IN-1 V3.2 users can upgrade to it without losing any of
the ALL-IN-1 functionality. Users coming from MailWorks for OpenVMS have a
reduced VT component and entirely new users have no VT component (although
there is a straightforward way to get it if they really want it).

We install the first baselevel on IOSG tonight. On Friday I will post a
pointer to this kit and it will be made available to anyone who registers
an interest.

I will also put the product spec into the IOSG PUBLIC drawer. This fully
describes the product.

this field test kit.

1.0 OVERVIEW OF OFFICE SERVER V4.0

Office Server V4.0, codenamed Nimbus, is a new product existing alongside
ALL-IN-1 Office Server Options for OpenVMS. OpenVMS V6.2 is the minimum
supported operating system. For other pre-requisite software, see the
Product Specification.

Nimbus builds upon the proven strengths of both ALL-IN-1 and MailWorks to
provide robust and scaleable services to a wide range of mail clients, on a
choice of server platforms communicating with a choice of mail backbones. It
will be the focal product for consolidation of the installed base offering an
attractive migration path for MailWorks and ALL-IN-1 customers. Although the
primary architecture of the product is Alpha, VAX and Message Router support is
included, thereby enabling corporations to move in bounded, manageable steps
from MailWorks systems without hardware or messaging backbone disruption. In
addition, it aids interoperability with contemporary products such as Microsoft
Exchange which is essential in a heterogeneous world.

Nimbus provides facilities for groups of users from small departments to
geographically dispersed teams working across the enterprise to communicate,
share documents and work together via a variety of PC client interfaces such as
MAPI, CFC, WWW, POP3. Through electronic mail and links into Digital Equipment
Corporation's networking facilities and de facto industry standard networks
such as TCP/IP, users can transport or receive multimedia information that has
been created on desktop, departmental and corporate systems. In addition, due
to its server based origins and comprehensive system administration facilities,
a minimum management staff is required.

Future versions of Office Server will not require a VT UI. Nimbus still
makes use of the VT UI for some irregular or troubleshooting Management
operations. Each installation scenario has a different level of access to
the VT UI belonging to Nimbus's companion product, ALL-IN-1 Office Server
Options for OpenVMS, (i.e. classic ALL-IN-1) with which it is fully
compatible. The scenarios are:

o Install as a fresh system for new customers or green field sites providing
server capabilities, with day-to-day administration from the Office Server
Administrator (OSA) and the remainder provided by the ALL-IN-1 VT SM UI. No
end-user access via a VT UI is supported without also having an ALL-IN-1
licence.

o Install on MailWorks site's system and use the migration tools provided to
move MailWorks users to Nimbus on the same or a different node. An end-user VT
UI providing Electronic Mail and File Cabinet functionality is also available
in this scenario. Administration is as the Fresh System using OSA and ALL-IN-1
VT SM UI.

o Install on an existing ALL-IN-1 V3.2 system enabling the server components to
be upgraded to Nimbus while retaining the full ALL-IN-1 V3.2 VT UI, customer
applications and customisations. Administration is as the Fresh System using
OSA and ALL-IN-1 VT SM UI.

Nimbus extends the functionality previously provided by ALL-IN-1 by:

o Introducing a Windows NT and Windows 95 client for System Administration.
o Supporting POP3 clients such as Netscape.
o Extending Filecab Server functionality, e.g. network fault tolerance.
o Providing X.500 Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) in addition to
  XDS.
o Loose integration of DIGITAL Enterprise Mail Monitor Windows NT and
  Windows 95 client.

The management roles in Nimbus use the MS Windows naming conventions of
Administrator and Power-user. Only the Administrator role (known in ALL-IN-1 as
a Manager) is currently supported. Power-users (known in ALL-IN-1 as
administrators) will be supported in a future version

Note: The DIGITAL Enterprise Mail Monitor V3.0 (previously MAILbus Monitor)
will ship at the same time as Nimbus and will be field tested jointly. No
EMM functionality is included in this Internal Field Test. For the first
external field test, an NT version of EMM will be issued.

Other IOSG products, namely VMS and UNIX versions of the EMM, the MAPI
driver for Office Server and the Web Interface to Office Server will be
included in the second external field test.

2.0 FUNCTIONALITY IN BL210

This is an evaluation baselevel for INTERNAL USE ONLY and it must not be
installed on production systems. In this baselevel, the following new
functionality is provided:

o Windows NT/Windows 95 system management client, Office Server
	   Administrator.

	o POP3 Server.

o Support for LDAP directory service products.

o Tools for migrating from MailWorks for OpenVMS to Office Server.
(see below for restictions with this baselevel)

2.1 INSTALLING AND RUNNING OFFICE SERVER

This baselevel does not include the new installation procedure for Office
Server. The installation procedure for this baselevel is an updated version
of the ALL-IN-1 Version 3.2 installation procedure. You will therefore see
references to ALL-IN-1 in addition to Office Server.

2.2 OFFICE SERVER ADMINISTRATOR

This baselevel introduces the Office Server PC administration client,
Office Server Administrator. Office Server Administrator allows you to
manage your Office Server system from a PC running Windows NT or Windows
95. The aim of this baselevel is to allow you to look at and evaluate the
user interface.

Baselevel 210 allows you to connect to Office Server to display user
information. Test scripts are provided behind the dialog boxes as full
functionality is not implemented in this baselevel. You can also browse the
Help to get a feel for the application.

You can install the Office Server Administrator on a PC running Windows NT
Version 4.0 or higher or Windows 95. See the Server and Administrator Release
Notes for how to install and run the OSA.

In this baselevel you can do the following:

o Connect to, and disconnect from, an Office Server system.

o Display a list of users on the Office Server system.

o View the properties of a selected user. To do this, select
the user and choose the Properties option from the user menu. You can
also use the context menu in the right hand pane.

o Call up the Delete user dialog box for a selected user.
Select a user and choose Delete from the User menu. You cannot
actually delete a user in this baselevel.

2.3 POP3 SERVER

Office Server includes a new server, the POP3 Server. The POP3 Server
allows POP3 clients such as the Netscape[TM] POP3 client to use Office
Server as their incoming mail server. This means that users can download
the contents of their Inbox on their Office Server system to their PC. Once
downloaded, users can read and reply to their mail messages. Replying to
messages requires the client's SMTP gateway to be configured. Office Server
is not used to reply to messages.

2.3.1 MANAGING THE POP3 SERVER

A temporary VT system management interface is provided for field test. Note
that all future management will be from Office Server Administrator. Once
you have created and started a POP3 Server on a particular node, it does
not require any routine management. See the Release Notes for details on
using and managing the POP3 Server.

2.4 LDAP DIRECTORY SUPPORT

Office Server provides extensions to the AIDA Server interface to allow
client users to perform lookups and updates on an X.500 directory service
that uses the standard LDAP interface.

For this baselevel, LDAP directories are supported for lookups from
TeamLinks clients. In particular, PMDF-X500 can be used as the directory.
See the Server Release notes for details.

2.5 MIGRATING MAILWORKS FOR OPENVMS TO OFFICE SERVER

Office Server provides tools to migrate MailWorks users to Office Server.
In this baselevel, only the filecabinets are migrated. The accounts, PABs
and Distribution Lists are not yet migrated. All documents and messages are
moved/copied with attachments preserved and addresses intelligently mapped.
This functionality is not described in the attached release notes and is
only supported on request and by agreement with IOSG. It is currently being
used live with a large customer and dedicated IOSG support.

2541.2TeamLinks Version Support - Office ServerWOTVAX::HALLETTKTue Mar 11 1997 17:036
Is it too early to start asking question like:

Will/does Office Server support TeamLinks versions 2.1 and 2.5 as well as 2.7?

Is there a draft SPD yet?

2541.3Drafts availableIOSG::DUTTNigel DuttTue Mar 11 1997 18:424
It should support anything that ALL-IN-1 V3.2 supports.

There's a draft sales update and a short white paper in the IOSG PUBLIC
drawer, as well as various presentations.
2541.4SPD Alpha MailWorks migrationPLACEK::waldek.rpw.dec.com::agatka::calkaWaldek CalkaWed Mar 12 1997 09:037
In draft Office Server SPD there is "QM-yyyAA-AF MailWorks Migration
to Office Server VAX" Licence. I cann't find simmilar migration
licence for Mailworks Alpha/VMS. Is it intentional or can we expect
such licence in final SPD.

2541.5Check out the draft Sales UpdateIOSG::HOLTDDave HoltWed Mar 12 1997 13:2517
Waldemar,

I haven't published the draft SPD yet - I think you've seen the draft Sales
Update. If you look at the table preceding the Price list you'll see a MW Alpha
to Office Server Alpha row and the answer is that they simply trade their MW
Alpha license for Client Access Licenses (equal to the number of users supported
at the time) at no cost.

I'm working with the field and service organisations as to how this can be
physically implemented when we ship. I must stress this isn't set in concrete
yet so be sparing with customers at this point, however, it is not our intention
to rip them off.

Regards,
Dave

2541.6PLACEK::waldek.rpw.dec.com::agatka::calkaWaldek CalkaMon Mar 17 1997 08:539
Dave

you are right, draft Sales Update article, not SPD. The table you
refer to is messed in my print-out so I could not figure out the
migration path for Alpha/MW users. I would suggest we treat VAX and
Alpha users the same way so the equivalent of QM-yyyAA-AF for Alpha
would be very nice.
