2488.1 | some question... | IOSG::STANDAGE | My hovercraft is full of eels | Mon Jan 27 1997 11:22 | 16 |

Hi,
If the server is involved then the MAIN drawer must be either shared or
set up for SMU access ? Can you confirm this ?
Is anything logged in the OAFC$SERVER.LOG log file ?
Are the servers from V3.0A days, or is there a TLC installed. You're
running a rather old version of ALL-IN-1 now...

| Kevin,
The MAIN drawer is shared with another user, and OAFC$SERVER.LOG does
not show any problem. Yes, we have TLC installed too. The reason of not
upgrade ALL-IN-1 to the latest version is because the whole region is
standardised to use the same version. Secondly, with the Exchange
project, I believe there will not be any upgrade plan (as far as I
know).
Hopefully I have given you sufficient information. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jonah

Jonah,
I'm afraid I haven't got any clear answers. Is this problem restricted
to one user or does anyone who has their MAIN drawer shared get the
hang ? Is there any difference if their default editor type is changed
?
Another test...could you get the user(s) to select any document in
their shared MAIN drawer and attempt to reserve it (option RSV).
Does this work successfully ?

| Kevin,
The problem occured to a number of users before. Whether their MAIN
drawer shared with other users, I have yet to find out. But the case
which I mentioned in my .0, yes, the drawer is shared.
If MAIN drawer is shared between two person, what causes it to hang
when try to create or answer a mail.
What if the MAIN drawer is not shared, what are the possibilities that
a process will hang when the user tries to edit a mail.
You question on reserving document, I do not understand how would it
hang a process?

Jonah,
>>If MAIN drawer is shared between two person, what causes it to hang
>>when try to create or answer a mail.
This is what I'm trying to determine. The questions I asked will
hopefully narrow down the possibilities...
>>What if the MAIN drawer is not shared, what are the possibilities that
>>a process will hang when the user tries to edit a mail.
Hopefully none...but the sharing of the drawer is significant (see
below)... Obviously there's a problem somewhere, so my questions are an
attempt to narrow down the possibilities of what could be causing it.
>>You question on reserving document, I do not understand how would it
>>hang a process?
If the drawer is shared, then when the message is created it's entry
will appear in the CREATED folder just *BEFORE* the editor is invoked.
At this stage (and throughout the create/edit), it has a status of
RESERVED. This is because you are creating/editing a new message in a
shared drawer and our sharing model places it in a RESERVED state so
that no other users can perform an operation on the message.
All ALL-IN-1 reservations are done via the File Cabinet Server, and so
the FCS is used by ALL-IN-1 to perform this reservation.
If the drawer is not shared (or if the file cabinet server if not
running), the entry in the CREATED folder will *NOT* be RESERVED, but
instead will be UNSENT. So in other words, in this instance nothing is
using the File Cabinet Server.
Therefore, the questions regarding if the drawers are shared and if a
normal user reservation works are improtant questions. I need to
determine if the hang is occurring when the server attempts to perform
the reservation, or whether it is happening at some point thereafter.
Hope that makes things a little clearer. Without knowing the answers to
these questions, it's difficult to say what is going wrong...
-Kevin.

Kevin,
I understand your explanation. I have just checked with my
colleague whom encountered this problem before, she told me
her drawer is not shared with anyone. I now wonder could it
be some problem in the server. I have enabled the tracing,
hopefully I may find out something from there. Also, when
an user encounter the problem, users who are using the same
system get the problem too.

Jonah,
If the drawer is not shared, then I wouldn't expect any interaction
with the file cabinet server at all ! So, this is somewhat of a
mystery. I'd be careful enabling server tracing for any lengthy period
of time as the trace output file will get very large fairly quickly.
Were these users using WPS+ as the editor ? I'm wondering if there
might have been some resource problem on the system which stopped people
from invoking the editor successfully...although we're now going into
areas I'm not so familiar with.
