We are in the process of rewriting the MDMS (Media and Device Management
Services) portion of SLS (Storage Library System). For MDMS to be a
competely separate entity, we are redoing the DCL commands to make them
easier to use and more consistent. The current verb for SLS/MDMS is
STORAGE. We would like to use the MEDIA verb for the new MDMS.
MEDIA was registered somewhere around 1988 for the VAX Media Manager
product (MMG) from the TOPS (Tape and Optical Systems) software group.
This software was to be used with the RV64 optical jukebox. The product
reached end-of-life several years ago and fewer than 100 licenses were
sold. MMG is currently "owned" by our group, SMS (Storage Management
Software).
Because of the age of MMG, lack of sales and the fact that it will not
run on ALPHA or OpenVMS V6.0 or higher, we think that reusing MEDIA will
be safe. MDMS V3.0 will run on both VAX and ALPHA for OpenVMS V6.1
or higher.
The new DCL commands will be posted here shortly after initial internal
review.
Thanks,
Barb

I don't have a problem with you reusing MEDIA since you've talked to
the current "owner". Just in case, you might want to write your
installation to see if the VAX Media Manager might still be on the
system and ask the installer if its OK to proceed.

That's a good idea. I'll make a note of that. We are not very thrilled with MEDIA as a verb in general, but can't seem to think of anything else. The MEDIA commands will be very similar to the STORAGE commands for SLS, so if there are any suggestions on something better, we are open. Barb | |||||
