Your customer misinterpreted the notice. Staring with the next

and some may never choose to change.

Leslie,
Thank you for your request for information regarding the Software Product
Library and it's contents. Up until early 1995, as part of our OpenVMS
offerings, there were a number of lexicons included for a number of
languages supported by both WPS-PLUS, ALL-IN-1 and DECwrite. These were
retired as of the Q1 releases of the libraries for both OpenVMS VAX and
OpenVMS Alpha.
An excerpt from the SPD (Software Product Description) for the British
lexicon supporting OpenVMS Alpha reads:
"The International Lexicons for OpenVMS[TM] AXP[TM] are wordlists used
for spell checking verification and correction within WPS-PLUS[TM] (in
ALL-IN-1[TM] IOS for OpenVMS AXP) and DECwrite[TM] for OpenVMS AXP.
Users can purchase optional lexicons to provide multilingual spell ver-
ification and correction capability for DECwrite and WPS-PLUS on the
OpenVMS AXP platform. Each lexicon consists of a list of words sim-
ilar to a dictionary, but without the associated meanings. Users se-
lect the words or document to be spellchecked and choose the appro-
priate lexicon purchased."
I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for and nothing is mentioned
regarding pronunciations at all. These lexicons are not supported in the
current version of ALL-IN-1 and it is highly recommended that you contact
the Digital Sales office nearest you for further availability information.
Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions regarding
our Software Product Libraries.

I hear competition should really be a compliment to any business.

Digital,
I am extremely dissatisfied with the documentation concerning the recent
change to the bookreader documentation. When I opened my distribution,
there was nothing inside actually indicating a change, it just didn't
work when I mounted the CD-ROM and tried to use it. The only way that I
knew that you actually switched formats was to go back to the December
distribution and look through that documentation, only to find a sheet
saying that it was coming in the next release.
There was nothing giving me any kind of direction as to how to get
started with the new BNU product - I had to dig through the directory
structure of the CD to try and find a file that would give me good
information about how to install the product, and then there was no text
file that I could find, I had to print out a postscript copy of the users
guide.
In the future, if you make chages such as this, please make it obvious
that you have made changes, and please give at least minimal information
on how to get started with the new product.
Sincerely
Kelly McDonald.

We have forwarded your observation onto the OpenVMS group which administers
the web site referenced.
In reviewing the page it isn't clear, but the [email protected] account
is for information contained within the rollout report itself. The report
is delineated by use of fixed point teletype font. The pointers on the
page, including the one you found the error in, are created and administered
by the OpenVMS group so we can't fix this directly.
We'll check the page in a few days to see if the information has been corrected.
Thank you for finding this.

Gentle folk,
We just received the March, 1997 edition of the OpenVMS Documentation
library, and discovered that it is unusable at our site.
Introducing yet another proprietary documentation format (BKB)
and utility (ODL) which disenfranchises older versions of the VMS
operating system is *NOT* acceptable.
In contrast, we would have been quite happy if the documentation
were provided in HTML format as is being done for Digital Unix.

2. Is it possible to setup the BNU for the InfoServer and if yes,
what is the easiest way to do this with small work?
3. How can i add BookReader books or HTML books to BNU library?

Subj: ODL New Directions - questions
I mounted the March 1997 On-Line Doc CDs. My Bookreader could not access
them. So I began reading the documentation that came with the CDs.
Since then, I have;
1) Printed the 'Online Documentation Library - CD-ROM Users' Guide',
2) Upgraded from DECwindows Motif 1.1 to 1.2-4,
3) Attempted to print the 'OpenVMS Internet Product Suite Version 1.1
Installation guide and Product Notes' (the $ SET DISPLAY example
did not help at all, what are the options) from my VAXstation and
my PC, I finally had to use LYNX to print this document,
4) Attempted to access the same file using Netscape Navigator from
my PC, and
5) Discovered that since my VAXstation has a black and white monitor,
Netscape Navigator will not even work.
If I am reading the documentation correctly, I cannot get to the Online
Documentation files without BNU. The installation of BNU searches for
Netscape Navigator before it will install.
I have a VAXstation 3100/30 with a black and white monitor. VMS version
6.1 and Motif 1.2-4.
I have a Dell pentium with a 17" color display and Netscape Navigator
3.0. Windows 95.
How do I get to the Online Documentaion? Am I misreading the BNU
installation instructions? Is there a way to get to the Online files
from a PC using Netscape Navigator? (I have access to a Windows NT machine
with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Can I get to the files with that
product?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Mr. Ball:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online Docu-
mentation Library.
The Online Documentation Library is unlikely to change
to HTML format within the next few months. The intent
of the Bookshelf Navigation Utility is to assist in that
transition and help move away from proprietary formats.
In the meantime, we will continue to make available the
Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy so that you can continue
to access Bookreader books on the CD, at least for the
next few releases.
To access the new Online Documentation Library CD-ROMs,
you can do the following:
1. Install the Bookshelf Navigation Utility. You can
continue the installation even though BNU will not
be able to find Netscape Navigator on your system.
Keep in mind that the BNU will work fine except when
it encounters an HTML book in the library. Without
Netscape Navigator installed, the BNU will be unable
to open the book. Note, however, that there are cur-
rently few books available exclusively in HTML format
on the ODL.
2. Continue using the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy. It
isn't apparent from your feedback which platform you
are on (OpenVMS Alpha or OpenVMS VAX).
If you are on OpenVMS VAX, a saveset is provided on
the CD-ROM which you can use to continue to access
the Bookreader books with a Bookreader hierarchy.
This saveset is located in [SETUP]VAXDOCMAR97.SAV and
information on accessing the saveset is in [README]$README.TXT
on Disc 1 of the ODL.

If you are on OpenVMS Alpha, the Bookreader book-
shelf hierarchy is being made available through ECO
ALPCDDOCMAR97.
Note that the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy will not
be able to access any HTML books on the ODL (although
there are a limited number of these today).
We regret any inconvenience that you have encountered
while trying to use the Bookshelf Navigation Utility.

Subj: Need to verify BNU on Japanese OS environment.
Hi,
I have understood recently that Digital UNIX Q2CY97 ODL includes BNU.
Japan needs to verify the tool and the associated documents such as
user's guide or readme are applicable for Japanese environment or not.
Could you let me know, where I can get the tool and the associated
documents online.
This is urgent and very important for Japan.
Your help is highly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Yoshi

Dear Dr. Arnold:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
Cover letters issued with previous Online Documenta-
tion Librarys have announced the introduction of the
Bookshelf Navigation Utility (BNU).
Some of your questions may be answered by a "Frequently
Asked Questions" document that will be sent out in a
cover letter to all existing Online Documentation Li-
brary subscribers. In addition, this information will be
included in future versions of the Online Documentation
Library User's Guide.
In addition, that guide will be updated in the near fu-
ture to provide additional information about integrating
your existing library with the BNU.
In the mean time, to access the new Online Documentation
Library CD-ROMs, you can do the following:
1. Install the Bookshelf Navigation Utility. You can
continue the installation even though BNU will not
be able to find Netscape Navigator on your system.

rently few books available exclusively in HTML format

2. Continue using the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy. It was
not clear to us which platform you were on (OpenVMS Alpha
or OpenVMS VAX).

I must admit this is one of the worse things we have done at Digital. To use
Netscape but NOT put the files in .html format. I can not run netscape on my
VAX, I run it from a pc and an alpha running dunix. Now I can no longer access
the online documentation as:
1. It is NOT in bookreader format
2. I can not access the files from dunix or the pc as nfs serving the files
does no good, as bnu doesn't run on either.
How in the world am I supposed to access the documentation?

I just received the BNU flash message.
It states
"Netscape Navigator V2.02 or higher. Netscape Navigator re-
quires Digital TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS software
(minimum
Version 3.3 or later with corresponding mandatory update) "
But nothing mentions what the UCX 3.3 mandatory update is.
What ECO of UCX v3.3 should we be at to run Netscape?
Thanks!

Subj: ODL New Directions: Duplicate books on ODL sets
The new BNU doc sets are set up so that any books which are to be found in
different shelf "trees" are duplicated. This is VERY prodigal of disk space
which can be a problem for those of us who don't have enough CD readers and
copy some of the ODL CDs to hard disk. By my addition, the list below adds up
to over 88,800 unnecessary blocks.
Note that this is not a problem with BNU, but with the formatting of the ODL
doc sets. It seems to me that it should be possible to put each book out
only once and point the different bookshelves to it using an explicit path.

Dear Tom:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
The vast majority of books are still compatible with
Bookreader. To access the new Online Documentation Li-
brary CD-ROMs, you can do the following:
However, there are currently few
books available exclusively in HTML format on the
ODL.
2. Continue using the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy.

Unfortunately, DIGITAL erred on the cover letter so it
was not included in the box with the ODL.
We are pleased that you were able to print the User

We received the march document set and I have installed BNU on a VAXstation 4000
model 60, running 6.2 OpenVMS, and Netscape Navigator Gold, version 3.0b5.
Invoking BNU results as follows:
$ bnu
Error opening bookshelf.
Title: Unknown.
File: LIBRARY.ODL
Reason: no such file or directory
Could not find accessible bookshelf.

If I force BNU (by selecting File, Switch Library) to present a library, I get
further errors when it invokes Bookreader. We presently find this distribution

Subj: March Online Documentation Library, VAX & Alpha: Bookreader issues
Dear People,
Having received the VAX and Alpha ODL CDROMs for March, I have a
number of issues that seem to have no clear resolution. I
understand your desire to have sites migrate to BNU, and I
understand your desire to move to BNU in order to have a multi-
platform documentation interface. Nevertheless, it looks like this
is going to be a potentially difficult move for us.
BACKGROUND:
==========
VMS at the SLAC site comprises three moderate sized VMSclusters
plus dozens of standalone VMS systems. My cluster consists of 33
nodes, both VAX and Alpha; the second largest cluster consists of
about 20 nodes, both VAX and Alpha, and the smallest cluster has
about 12 nodes, all VAX. The standalone systems are probably evenly
split between older VAXen and newer Alphas.
Within my machine room I maintain an Infoserver. The Infoserver
serves the documentation CDROMs to all VMS systems at SLAC,
typically in excess of 80 systems have these CD's mounted. Up to
this point, I have loaded all but the last of the VAXDOC and all but
the last of the AXPDOC CD's (we haven't needed to access the
Japanese and other Asian books) in the Infoserver. Both VAXDOC and
AXPDOC CD's are mounted by all systems, and we have simply been able
to define DECW$BOOK as a search list which includes all four of the
VAXDOC and AXPDOC CD's, plus one supplied by TGV for Multinet, etc.
It is our preliminary plan to continue to use Bookreader to
access the March CD's. Once I've been able to mount these (see
questions below), the various systems will be able to migrate to BNU
at their own pace.
QUESTIONS:
=========
1) I recollect Digital having said, at some point in the past,
that the VAXDOC and AXPDOC documentation would be
consolidated into a single set of CD's. Is this still your
intended direction? If so, when do you expect to have it
fully implemented.
2) The VAXDOC collection has been reduced from 4 to 3 CD's, and
the 3rd of these contains only Japanese books, if I'm not
mistaken. The AXPDOC collection is still 2 CD's, but the
2nd of these now contains more than just the Japanese docs.
Is the VAXDOC collection a _superset_ of the AXPDOC
collection, or are there still books that are _only_ present
on the AXPDOC CD's (DECmigrate is/was an example of the
latter, Fortran 90 is another)?
3) The CD labeled VAXDOCMAR971 contains, in the [SETUP]
directory, the BACKUP saveset VAXDOCMAR97.SAV. I understand
(and have restored the saveset to disk) that this contains
the "bookshelf" files for the March VAXDOC CD's that will
allow Bookreader to be used (until or unless BNU is
installed). I found no such corresponding saveset on
AXPDOCMAR971 CD. Is there a corresponding set of bookshelf
files? If the answer to (2) above is that there _are_ books
on the AXPDOC set that are _not_ on the VAXDOC set, how are
we to access those via Bookreader?
4) It is a requirement for us to be able to access both VAX and
Alpha documentation from either an Alpha or a VAX. Will BNU
support this transparently? It is not clear from the
various ODL documentation since the Alpha version mentions
only AXPDOC, and the VAX version mentions on VAXDOC.
5) The documentation for Multinet (from Cisco, formerly TGV) is
in Bookreader format on a CDROM. Similarly, the
documentation for our NCD X-terminals is in a subdirectory
on disk, again in Bookreader format. The same is true of
various free and some Digital software, for example, DFU
found on the OpenVMS FREEWARE CD. If and when we move to
BNU, _how_ are we to make these additional sets of
Bookreader documentation _visible_ to BNU? With Bookreader,
it was a simple matter of editing LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF.
Is the same supported for the .ODL files? Is there another
supported method? Can you provide a tool to do the
conversion?
6) While I not have installed and tried BNU yet (I cannot since
I don't have sufficient free CDROM drives to maintain
support for the old CD's for the rest of the site _and_
mount the new CD's testing), I have read the various
documentation you have supplied, and that has appeared
recently on DSNlink. Given that BNU uses its resource file
to locate the mounted documentation CD's, it would _appear_
that upon changing CD's (as happens quarterly) and modifying
the resource file, _every_ instance of a running BNU
application must be stopped, and the user restart it, in
order to access the new CD's. Is this the case? Is
restarting BNU sufficient, or will users have to logout of
their current DECwindows Session in order that the BNU
resource file be read in again fresh?
Note that under Bookreader, when the system logical name
DECW$BOOK was changed, extant Bookreader applications could
(usually) continue without being restarted...
I look forward to reading your response. We would like to get
the March documentation online as soon as possible but must address
these questions first.
Thanks very much, Ken

Hello,
New BNU Documentation.
Here is the list of problems I found,
1. You can not search through all Books.
2. Not all documentation from DEC is compatible with BNU format, example:
OVMSDOC071 (VMS 7.1). is still on Bookreader format. We also have other
no-DEC documentation that works only with the bookreader.
3. Alpha documentation did not provide the bookreader bookself save set.
4. We have been using (very successfully I may add) shareware translation
programs
to view bookreader documents on a VT terminal or Web browser They not longer
works with the new format.
5. The documentation does not tell you how to use Netscape browser to access this
documents.
For now I will have to go back the Decembers documentation library.
It would be nice to leave DECW$BOOK directory until ALL libraries are converted.
What it is good about it:
1. Better organized
Summary: Not to good. You have to make sure that all the documentation you are
sending will work with this new format.

You guys are making it harder and harder for smaller, poorer customers to use
your products. As it is now, if I want to read documentation, I have to leave
my
office and travel to another building where the Alpha and its CD-ROM drive are
located so that I can load the appropriate CD. The only convenient way I have
to
read the documentation is with the VTB program that I downloaded from a DECUS
library. I don't have, and can't afford to get DECwindow Motif or an XWINDOWS
terminal, I don't have a PC network, I don't have an internet connection on the
Alpha,
and I have no prospects for getting netscape for the alpha (I am running VMS,
and
am not in a position to change operating system.)
I am getting more and more frustrated at the way you introduce "improvements"
which only make my life more difficult. I am sure I am not the only customer
in this
position. If you are going to make documentation that can only be read using
layered products, you should provide those layered products to the subscribers
to
your documentation service.

Hi,
I have just put the March 1997 documentation cds up on our system and followed
the instructions on AV-R5B5A-TE regarding installing the bookreader hierarchy
from saveset.
There seems to be a gap in these instructions round what should be entered into
the MASTER_LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file so that the shelf can be seen. I've tried
various options but because there is no *.decw$bookshelf file I can't see these
books.
Can you advise me on what I need to do to view these books up until I get around
to installing BNU?
Thanks, Sylvia Macdonald

Dear Mr. Harries:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online

The error that you get when invoking BNU on your VAXsta-

the BNU and running the setup again. To do this, follow
these steps:
$ PRODUCT REMOVE BNU
$ DELETE DECW$SYSTEM_DEFAULTS:BNU.DAT;*,LIBRARY.ODL;*
$ @DISK$VAXDOCMAR971:[SETUP]SETUP
Upon completion, you should see the following lines at
the end of the file, SYS$COMMON:[DECW$DEFAULTS.USER]BNU.DAT;:

get? Do you get these errors when invoking Bookreader by
itself? Please provide us with more information if you
are able.

Dear R. Wingert:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
There is no orderable manual for the Bookshelf Naviga-
tion Utility. The Online Documentation Library User's
Guide contains all the information on installing and
using the BNU. This guide will continue to be updated
with more information in the future.
Yes, the BNU can be set up to work with an InfoServer.
Simply mount the InfoServer CD-ROM as you normally
would. InfoServer devices appear as local devices on
the OpenVMS system so that it becomes transparent to
the BNU that it is reading from the InfoServer.
The next release of the ODL will have an updated ODL
User's Guide which will include information on extending
the library to add your own Bookreader and HTML books.
The ODL bookshelves used by the BNU are similar to
Bookreader bookshelves. Differences include:
o A title entry only has two fields-the keyword "title"
and the text of the title.
Book and Shelf entries have three fields-a keyword
that indicates the type of entry (e.g. SHELF, BOOK,
HTML), a pathname (file specification), and the text
of the title.
o Fields in ODL bookshelves are separated by white
space (i.e. blanks and tabs) instead of the backslash
('\') character used by Bookreader. However, BNU will
recognize backslash characters as field separators.
o ODL pathnames use ISO-9660 style syntax. Pathname
components are separated with slash ('/') characters.
OpenVMS directory syntax is not recognized and will
cause errors. The pathnames are translated to OpenVMS
syntax internally.

o Pathnames that begin with '/' are treated as abso-

Subj: RE: ODL New Directions (BNU questions)
Hello,
many thanks for your short description of the new BNU. Here some more
questions:
1. We have stored all books, shelf and librarian on a disk on
our InfoServer. If i understand right, i have to convert all
library- and shelffiles to be BNU compatible, or not?
2. If a pathname do not start with a '/' or '%', this will be
interpreted as relative to the currrent position?
3. Is it possible to add WWW pathes like the following:
http://www/index.html or are only the normal ISO-9660 filenames
allowed (/dev/directory/.../filename.extension)? If the latter
is right, is there any other way to specify WWW pathes?
Ince more many thanks for your helping. Thanks in advance and regards R. Wingert

Dear Sandy:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
We're sorry that the new changes have not worked to your
advantage. The Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy will still
provide access to those books in Bookreader format. This
hierarchy was not made available on CD-ROM in the last
release, but, due to customer feedback we will include
it on the next release.
Although we encourage you to install the BNU, we are
also making available a Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy
for the OpenVMS Alpha Online Documentation Library. This
hierarchy is currently available in a saveset provided
through thje Engineering Change Order (ECO) ALPCDDOC-

Dear Mr. Rieckmann:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
Some of your questions may be answered by a "Frequently
Asked Questions" document that will be sent out in a
cover letter to all existing Online Documentation Li-
brary subscribers. This information will also be in-
cluded in future versions of the Online Documentation
Library User's Guide.
In addition, that guide will be updated in the near fu-
ture to provide additional information about integrating
your existing library with the BNU.
With the next release of the ODL, the OpenVMS documenta-
tion set will be BNU-compatible and will be included in
the CD-ROM consolidation.
The OpenVMS Alpha Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy is
being made available through Engineering Change Order

Your problems of using shareware translation programs
to view bookreader documents on a VT terminal or WEB
browser should be alleviated through the Bookreader hi-
erarchy for Bookreader books. HTML documents are already
accessible by VT; if you have a Web server, you can copy
the HTML documents onto your Web server and access them
that way.
If you are experiencing problems with your Netscape
browser you should access Netscape 'help.' There are
different icons for books in the ODL; only when an HTML
icon appears will Netscape be launched to view those
books.

Thank you for your observation.
Unfortunately, this isn't our web page. Although the reports are
ours, the page pointing them is owned by the OpenVMS product group.
It is the pointers that have "OpenMVS" rather than "OpenVMS". Therefore
I regret we cannot directly fix the problem.
We have forwared your observation to the appropriate group and they have
been good about fixing problems (this happened last quarter too -- I guess
they have an automated procedure to generate this page of links?). We'll

Dear Mr. Fairfield:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
Some of your questions may be answered by a "Frequently
Asked Questions" document that will be sent out in a
cover letter to all existing Online Documentation Li-
brary subscribers. This information will be included
in future versions of the Online Documentation Library
User's Guide.
That guide will be updated in the near future to provide
additional information about integrating your existing
library with the BNU.
The ODL bookshelves used by the BNU are similar to
Bookreader bookshelves. Differences include:
o A title entry only has two fields: the keyword "title"
and the text of the title.
Book and Shelf entries have three fields: a keyword
that indicates the type of entry (e.g.
The pathnames are translated to OpenVMS
syntax internally.

o Pathnames that begin with '/' are treated as abso-
lute. The first component is the device name. If
a pathname begins with '%label', BNU looks up the
mount point for that label in its resource file and
substitutes that device for the %label field.
o BNU does not apply any default file extensions. You
must include the extension in the pathname.
DIGITAL may consolidate the VAX and AXP CD-ROM offerings
in the future; however, there are no plans in place to
implement that in the foreseeable future.
There are some books that are exclusive to OpenVMS
Alpha, and therefore not included on the OpenVMS VAX
CD-ROM. The reverse is also true.
For OpenVMS Alpha, the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy is
being made available through ECO ALPCDDOCMAR97. In the
future, the Bookreader hierarchy will be available on
CD-ROM for both OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha.
This saveset is available from:
o DIGITAL Electronic Service Delivery Tools (such as
DSNlink, Web Information and Support Service (WIS),
and DIGITAL Dial- In Access (DIA))
o the World Wide Web at:
http://www.service.digital.com/html/patch_main.html
o the following FTP address:
ftp://ftp.service.digital.com/public/vms/
If you need further information, please contact your
normal DIGITAL support channel.
The VAX and Alpha documentation can be read from either
platform transparantly, provided you run the SETUP.COM
procedure for each ODL library you wish to access. This
procedure is found in the [SETUP] directory on disc
1 on every ODL library. The SETUP.COM procedure will
invoke the BNU installation if necessary and install the
appropriate BNU image.
As currently implemented, users will have to restart BNU
to be able to read a newly configured library. Restart-
ing BNU is sufficient, they do not have to restart their
DECwindows session. We have future changes planned that
will reduce the need to restart BNU.

Dear R. Wingert:
If you would like your own bookshelves to be compatible with
the BNU, yes you will have to convert all of them. However, if
your Bookreader files are all in a single directory, this can
be assured by the following two steps:
1. Make sure there are no directories in the file refer-
ences.
2. Make sure all shelf file references include the file
extension (such as .DECW$BOOKSHELF)
A pathname that does not start with a '/' or '%,' will
be interpreted as relative to the current position.
The "current position" means the location of the shelf
file containing the reference, not your default user
directory.
At this time, you can only use the ISO-9660 filenames.
One way to get at the World Wide Web paths would be to
create a local HTML file with the WWW references in it.
You could then use the BNU to navigate to the HTML file,
then follow the included WWW references with Netscape.
We hope this aids you in setting up your BNU.
Sincerely,

Well, it's great that Digital wants to provide more online documentation;
however, I think it is unreasonable for Digital to expect customers to have to
use Netscape. I do most of my work via a telnet session and do not have ready
access to the windowing terminal on the console. If you are going to force
your customers to use some web browser, then you should also provide a
text-based way to via the material (using Lynx perhaps). I hope you will give
some alternate method serious consideration.

I think it is ridiculous for Digital to waste time and resources creating
yet another new and proprietary standard for OpenVMS documentation. This
standard that is embraced world wide and by Digital ( except the OpenVMS
folks ) is a HTML browser client, I firmly believe that the OpenVMS group
need to provide it's documentation in 100% HTML format, and let the
licensed VMS users decide what browsers to use and what platform to
load the documentation on.

Dear Mr. Williams:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
However, there are currently few
books available exclusively in HTML format on the
ODL.
2. Continue using the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy. It
isn't apparent from your feedback which platform you
are on (OpenVMS Alpha or OpenVMS VAX).

Dear NT Solutions:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
However, there are currently few
books available exclusively in HTML format on the
ODL.
2. Continue using the Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy.

The March 1997 OpenVMS VAX Online Documentation Library no longer appears to be in "Bookshelf" format.
I'm assuming from the yellow notification sheet that it is now in a format that the Bookshelf Navigation Utility can read.
Unfortunately, I did not see any reference as to how we are supposed to install or use BNU. I read the release notes in the latest version of Motif and saw no reference to BNU.
Please explain how we are to use the March ODL.

Can you please advise what would be the correct order number
for the OpenVMS VAX software products online documentation
library CDROMs ?
Our service subscription includes the OpenVMS documentation
but does not include the documentation on the various specific
software products, such as DEC C/C++ or DEC FORTRAN language
reference manuals, user guides, etc.
Our local suppliers have suggested a 'one-time order' number
QA-VYR8A-G8, but could not confirm whether this CDROM does
include the compiler manuals and user guides mentioned above.

Hi,
The documentation for the 'OVMS VAX LP & OS PKG Q1CY97' kit
indicates that the OVMS 7.1 distribution should be on CD #1.
There is a directory for it containing documentation but no
binaries. Is there some trick to this or has OVMS 7.1 been
ommitted from the distribution? (It is not on CD #1 but I
have not checked the other CDs).
Any help appreciated.

DIGITAL
Online Documentation Library (ODL) Bookshelf Navigation Utility
(BNU) Update
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Dear Online Documentation Library Customer,
You recently received the Online Documentation Library for
OpenVMS VAX featuring the Bookshelf Navigation Utility (BNU).
This information package provides important information about
the BNU.
The BNU provides an interface to allow you to access online
bookshelves and books. However, the BNU may contain books in
formats other than Bookreader. In the OpenVMS VAX Online Docu-
mentation Library release, for example, there are some books in
HTML format which require Netscape Navigator[TM] for viewing.
Once you have installed Netscape Navigator, the BNU will launch
it automatically when it encounters an HTML book in the Online
Documentation Library.
The goal of DIGITAL is to provide you with increasing amounts of
online documentation using state-of-the-art browser technology.
The BNU provides a single interface by which you can access
any of the online books in the Online Documentation Library,
regardless of format. We believe this strategy responds to
your requests for greater functionality, providing you with
a globally competitive environment that takes advantage of the
latest browser technologies.
Although we encourage you to install the BNU, we are also mak-
ing available a Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy if you need to
continue to use this interface while planning your BNU implemen-
tation.
The remaining information in this package about the BNU contains
the following:
o Instructions for installing Netscape Navigator for use with
the BNU
o System requirements and pointers to BNU installation informa-
tion
o Instructions on installing the Bookreader hierarchy from
saveset (if you choose not to install the BNU at this time)
o Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the BNU
We look forward to your comments and feedback and encourage you
to provide any information on the new features being initiated
within the Online Documentation Library. You can send comments

Instructions for Installing Netscape Navigator for Use with the
BNU
If you are planning to install the BNU, you should install
Netscape Navigator first in order to be able to access HTML
books available on the BNU.
The following instructions describe how to install the Netscape
Navigator to make it available on your system for use with the
Bookshelf Navigation Utility (BNU):
o If you have access to the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite
CD-ROM[1] and you want to install the Netscape Navigator
without installing any of the other products on that CD-ROM,
follow these steps:
1. Mount Version 1.1 of the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite
CD-ROM by entering the following command (where cd-device
is the device holding the CD-ROM):
$ MOUNT/OVERRIDE=ID cd-device:
2. Copy the image to SYS$SYSTEM from the VAX directory. The
file is located as follows on the V1.1 OpenVMS Internet
Product Suite CD-ROM:
cd-device:[INTERNET_PRODUCT_SUITE.NS_NAV_EXPORT.VAX]NETSCAPE-EXPORT.EXE
o If your kit does NOT include the OpenVMS Internet Product
Suite CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1. Use any available browser to access the following OpenVMS
web site:
http://www.openvms.digital.com/openvms/products/ips/nsdownload.html
2. Download the appropriate file to SYS$SYSTEM on your VAX
system.
NOTE
o If you are running DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for
OpenVMS, you must install update VAXMOTF07_U3012. This
update is provided on the OpenVMS Internet Product
Suite CD-ROM. You can check the following web site as
well:
http://www.service.digital.com:8031/
o By default, the BNU accesses the Netscape Navigator
image in SYS$SYSTEM. If you copied the file to a dif-
ferent directory, the BNU will prompt you for that
directory specification.

System Requirements and Pointers to BNU Installation Information
The Bookshelf Navigation Utility (BNU) has the following Operat-
ing System and layered product requirements:
o OpenVMS Version 6.1 or later
o DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-4 or DECwindows Motif Version
1.2-3 with mandatory update (MUP) VAXMOTF07_U3012 applied.
This MUP is available on the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite
CD-ROM[1].
o Netscape Navigator V2.02 or higher. Netscape Navigator re-
quires Digital TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS software (minimum
Version 3.3 or later with corresponding mandatory update) or
any TCP/IP software supporting a Berkeley socket interface.
Refer to the previous page for information on how to access
and install Netscape Navigator for use with the BNU.
NOTE
You can install the BNU without Netscape Navigator, but
the BNU will then be unable to access any HTML books. Cur-
rently, there are only a small number of books available
exclusively in HTML format on the Online Documentation
Library.
The BNU also has the following device requirements:
o A bitmap DECwindows display (a workstation or personal com-
puter using PC Xserver software, or X Terminal).
o A CD-ROM reader
The BNU requires approximately 250 blocks of disk space to be
installed on the system disk.
Instructions for Installing the BNU
Once you have installed Netscape Navigator, refer to the Online
Documentation Library CD-ROM User's Guide for detailed instruc-
tions on installing the BNU. This guide is available in the
[README] directory on Disc 1 of the Online Documentation Library
in the following formats:
[README]ODL_USER_GUIDE.PS (Postscript)
[README]ODL_USER_GUIDE.TXT (Text)
[README]ODL_USER_GUIDE.BKB (Bookreader)
In addition, be sure to read the Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) available in this information package.

Installing the Bookreader Hierarchy from Saveset
We encourage you to install the BNU if possible so that you can
access all the current books available on the Online Documenta-
tion Library and take advantage of new browser technology. In
the future, Digital plans to provide an increasing amount of in-
formation in formats such as HTML which will be accessible only
through the BNU.
However, we also realize that you may want to continue to use
Bookreader to navigate your Online Documentation Library while
you plan your BNU implementation. As a result, we have pro-
vided a saveset containing a Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy.
The following instructions indicate how to access and use the
Bookreader bookshelf hierarchy.
The saveset is located on Disc 1 of the Online Documentation
Library in the following location:
DISK$VAXDOCMAR971:[SETUP]VAXDOCMAR97.SAV
The following information about installing the Bookreader hier-
archy from the saveset is also available in [README]$README.TXT
on Disc 1 of the Online Documentation Library.
1. Mount each of the CD-ROMs using the logical name DISK$volume_
label. This is the default logical name assigned by the
OpenVMS MOUNT command. For example:
$ MOUNT/SYSTEM/NOWRITE DKA400: VAXDOCMAR971
%MOUNT-I-MOUNTED, VAXDOCMAR971 mounted on _NODE$DKA400:
$ SHOW LOGICAL DISK$VAXDOCMAR971
"DISK$VAXDOCMAR971" = "NODE$DKA400:" (LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE)
2. Unpack the Bookreader bookshelf saveset found at [SETUP]VAXDOCMAR97.SAV
on Disc 1. For example:
$ BACKUP DISK$VAXDOCMAR971:[SETUP]VAXDOCMAR97.SAV/SAVE_SET -
_$ WORK1:[VAXDOCMAR97]
3. Define DECW$BOOK to include the target directory. For example:
$ DEFINE DECW$BOOK SYS$SYSROOT:[DECW$BOOK], WORK1:[VAXDOCMAR97]

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About the BNU
Question:
Can Bookreader use the new bookshelf (.ODL) and book (.BKB)
files on the March 1997 OpenVMS Online Documentation Library
(ODL) CD-ROMs?
Answer:
Bookreader cannot read the bookshelf (.ODL) files, but can read
book (.BKB) files.
The new ODL CD-ROMs are designed to be used with the BNU to
present a homogeneous user interface to a heterogeneous library.
Even though the BNU's user interface looks like the familiar
Bookreader bookshelves, the file formats are different.
The .BKB files are Bookreader books, and in fact, the BNU uses
Bookreader to display them. (The BNU only displays the .ODL
files). The .BKB extension is used instead of .DECW$BOOK to
promote consistency across platforms.
For customers who cannot meet the system requirements for the
BNU, the March OpenVMS VAX ODL includes a saveset that con-
tains a Bookreader library. This library enables access to all
Bookreader books in the ODL. Instructions for setting up this
library are in [README]$README.TXT on Disc 1 of the ODL CD-ROM
set.
Question:
What are the requirements to run the BNU on my system?
Answer:
At a minimum, your system environment must include:
OpenVMS VAX V6.1 (or later)
DECwindows Motif V1.2-3 (or later)
CD-ROM reader(s)
DECwindows display
To display HTML books, the BNU requires Netscape Navigator
V2.02 for OpenVMS. Netscape Navigator also requires DECwindows
Motif V1.2-4, or an update applied to V1.2-3 of DECwindows Motif
(ALPMOTF07_U3012 for Alpha Systems or VAXMOTF07_U3012 for VAX
systems).
Question:
Where can I find Netscape Navigator for OpenVMS?

The Netscape Navigator for OpenVMS Alpha and VAX is available on
the OpenVMS Internet Product Suite (IPS) CD-ROM. The IPS CD-ROM
ships with the OpenVMS V7.1 Operating System kit. The IPS CD-ROM
may also be ordered separately from Digital.
Netscape Navigator may also be downloaded from the OpenVMS
Internet Product Suite website at:
http://www.openvms.digital.com/openvms/products/ips/
Question:
Where can I find documentation for the BNU?
Answer:
The Online Documentation Library User's Guide includes informa-
tion on installing and running the BNU. This manual is available
on Disc 1 of the Online Documentation Library in three formats:
[README]ODL_USER_GUIDE.PS Postscript
[README]ODL_USER_GUIDE.TXT Text
[README]ODL_USER_GUIDE.BKB Bookreader
Additional information on customizing the BNU and ODL will be
included in a future Online Documentation Library release.
Question:
Why do I get BOOKBROWSER license warning messages (%LICENSE-W-
...) while installing the BNU from the March ODL? What should I
do?
Answer:
The BNU installation installs or replaces the BOOKBROWSER
license. BOOKBROWSER permits access to Bookreader books for
unlicensed products.
If you only get %LICENSE-W-... messages, you may safely ig-
nore them. However, they may be followed by these Polycenter
messages:
%PCSI-E-OPFAILED, operation failed
Terminating is strongly recommended. Do you want to terminate? [YES]
In this case, you should terminate the installation. The error
is a result of having an existing BOOKBROWSER license loaded on
the system.
The workaround is to deactivate your current BOOKBROWSER li-
cense:
$ LICENSE UNLOAD BOOKBROWSER /PRODUCER=DEC
Then rerun SETUP.COM

VMS ODL.
Question:
How do I configure the BNU to read the new Online Documenta-
tion Library? Do I need to define logical names like I did for
Bookreader? If not, how does the BNU find the libraries?
Answer:
Every Online Documentation Library (ODL) shipment contains
a setup command procedure to configure the BNU to read that
library. The procedure is located at [SETUP]SETUP.COM on Disc 1
of the CD-ROM set. Each time you get a new ODL, run the setup
procedure that comes with it.
The BNU does not use logical names or search lists to find
files. The bookshelves (.ODL files) use relative pathnames for
references to files on the same CD-ROM. Bookshelf references to
files on another CD-ROM rely on X Window System resource defi-
nitions. The resources are defined by the setup procedure. One
resource is defined for each volume of the ODL. The resource
name is simply the volume label of the target CD-ROM. The re-
source value identifies the device where the CD-ROM is mounted.
We recommend the resource values be logical, rather than phys-
ical, device names. The default resource value for a CD-ROM is
the logical device name, DISK$volume_label. This name is defined
by OpenVMS when you mount the CD-ROM anywhere on the OpenVMS
system.
Question:
Can the new format Online Documentation Library CD-ROMs be
accessed over a network connection via the BNU?
Answer:
No, the BNU is designed to access local devices on the system
running the BNU. However, you can transparently mount remote
devices as local devices using one of the following mechanisms:
o TCP/IP and NFS
o DECdfs with DECnet or DECnet/OSI
o InfoServer
If you have none of the above mechanisms available, you can use
logical names to make remote devices look like local devices to
the BNU. This approach is not supported, but will allow you to
access the BNU (.ODL) bookshelves and Bookreader (.BKB) books
on the remote device. However, you may get errors from other
browsers such as Netscape Navigator.

Define the DISK$volume_label logical names to the remote devices
where the CD-ROMs are mounted.
For example:
$ DEFINE/SYSTEM DISK$VAXDOCMAR971 NODEB::DISK$VAXDOCMAR971:
$ DEFINE/SYSTEM DISK$VAXDOCMAR972 NODEC::DISK$VAXDOCMAR972:
$ DEFINE/SYSTEM DISK$VAXDOCMAR973 NODEB::DISK$VAXDOCMAR973:
Note that you do not need to know the physical device name on
the remote node.
Question:
I only have one CD-ROM reader on my system. How do I know which
products are on each CD-ROM disc of the Online Documentation
Library? Do I always need to have Disc 1 mounted?
Answer:
The CD-ROMs are divided into categories. There may be several
categories on each disc, but each category is entirely on a
single disc. The "Getting Started" category is always on Disc
1, but the other categories may be on any disc of the set. The
master index in [README]ODL_MASTER_INDEX.* on Disc 1 identifies
which disc each product is on.
You only need to have one disc mounted to get at the files on
that disc. Every disc contains a copy of the library's top-level
shelf in [000000]CONTENTS.ODL.
When you run the setup for the library, specify the default
logical volume name as the mount point for each disc (e.g.
DISK$VAXDOCMAR971, DISK$VAXDOCMAR972). Then, if you attempt
to open a shelf on another disc that is not mounted, you will
get an error message that the device does not exist. The first
component of the filespec in the message tells you the device
name (e.g. DISK$VAXDOCMAR972) you specified when you setup the
library. You can then mount that disc (Disc 2 in this example)
and proceed.

Thanks in advance,

I was happy to see that you are moving to browser-based documentation,
but I am still not sure it will help us. We have a three-node cluster
(two VAX, one Alpha) running VMS v6.2. We do not run DECwindows and
have no plans to do so, since our applications do not require it. Can
we use this online documentation? Our developers would certainly love
to have this information available on their desktops. I would greatly
appreciate an answer to this question. Thank you.

Hello,
I've just installed BNU on our VMS 7.1 VMScluster. It's working quite
nicely and the HTML files provide definite added functionality
However, although the HTML files have definite
advantages I am concerned about the inability to (easily if at all)
print an entire book. For example,
I find it desirable and necessary to print the installation guides in
entirety.
It appears that with the advent of HTML docs the ability to print a whole
manual has been lost (without clicking on each of the chapters and printing
them separately).
Am I missing something here ? Will this functionality disappear ?
(this IS a problem with Hypertext. Obviously linked documentation
has advantages for interactive browsing but if there are >1
sections desired in hard copy, there is a problem. Our users require that
we provide the full document in postscript or PDF so they can print it
all if necessary).
Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for listening

Dear Mr. Lauer:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
The ability to print the whole book from HTML makes it
difficult to use online, thus, most authors have opti-
mized their HTML files for online display.
To help alleviate this situation, most all products have
a PostScript[TM] (.PS) or ASCII (.TXT) version of their
install guides available as part of their binary kits.
If a particular product's documentation is not available
in PostScript (.PS) or ASCII formats, you may wish to
provide feedback to that product group on either providing
.PS or .TXT files, or constructing their HTML files
as one large file that can be printed intact.
We regret any inconvenience that you have encountered
while trying to use the Bookshelf Navigation Utility.
It is the intent of DIGITAL to update and enhance the
Online Documentation Library to meet your needs, now and
in the future.
Sincerely,
Shared Engineering Services

Hello,
1) I'm trying to use BNU as described in the document called FAQ about the BNU
and in particular :
$ define/system disk$axpdocmar971 node::disk$axpdocmar971:
If the command is
$ dir DISK$AXPDOCMAR971
the result is :
$ Directory NODE::DISK$AXPDOCMAR971:[000,000]
000000.DIR;1 BACKUP.SYS;1 BADBLK.SYS;1 BADLOG.SYS;1
BITMAP.SYS;1 CONTENTS.ODL;1 CONTIN.SYS;1 CORIMG.SYS;1
HARDWARE.DIR;1 INDEXF.SYS;1 LABEL.DAT;1 OFFAPP.DIR;1
PRODLIST.ODL;1 PROGTOOL.DIR;1 README.DIR;1 SECURITY.SYS;1
SETUP.DIR;1 SYSMGMT.DIR;1 TELNTWRK.DIR;1 VOLSET.SYS;1
Total of 20 files.
$
But with BNU the display is :
X Online Documentation Library
X Online Documentation Library
and when I click on Online Documentation Library, there is an error message :
Error opening bookshelf.
Title: Online Documentation Library
File: /NODE::DISK$AXPDOCMAR971:/000000/contents.odl
Reason: no such device
In fact, the definitions used are not taken in the logicals table but in
bnu.dat and even with the good definition in bnu.dat the error message is
the same.
2) Some layered products with decwindows interface consult the bookreader
documentation as Help. It doesn't work any more.
Thank you for your answers

Dear Mr. Clar:
The BNU did not change the ability of Bookreader to
print books. Although the BNU does not support printing
books, Bookreader still does.
There are a few ways to print a book from the Bookreader.
The simplest is to select all topics in the Table of
Contents, then select File->Print Topic(s), in the Con-
tents window.
Alternatively, you could create a Bookreader library for
the book(s) you wish to print, open that library with
Bookreader and print the book from the library window as
you have always done.
The next release of the ODL will include a Bookreader
hierarchy which will make the latter alternative much
simpler.
We regret any inconvenience that you have encountered
while trying to use the Bookshelf Navigation Utility.
It is the intent of DIGITAL to update and enhance the
Online Documentation Library to meet your needs, now and

Sorry I don't agree with this.
If I select a book abd choose the file menu, the only options are
Open Book, Switch Library and Exit.
So you have first to Open the Book and then only you're able to
print but Topics by Topics and not the whole book.

Dear Mr. Orf:
Thank you for your recent feedback on the Online
Documentation Library.
To clarify your question, you have additional bookreader
libraries that you wish to integrate with the Bookshelf
Navigation Utility in other locations?
At this time, BNU can only access libraries on the same
system.
The Online Documentation Library bookshelves used by the
BNU are similar to Bookreader bookshelves. Differences
include:
o A title entry only has two fields: the keyword "ti-
tle" and the text of the title.
Book and Shelf entries have three fields: a keyword
that indicates the type of entry (e.g.
The pathnames are translated to OpenVMS
syntax internally.
o Pathnames that begin with '/' are treated as abso-
lute. The first component is the device name. If
a pathname begins with '%label', BNU looks up the
mount point for that label in its resource file and
substitutes that device for the %label field.
o BNU does not apply any default file extensions. You
must include the extension in the pathname.
Page 2
If you would like your own bookshelves to be compatible
with the BNU, you will have to convert all of them.
However, if your Bookreader files are all in a single
directory, this can be assured by the following two
steps:
1. Make sure there are no directories in the file refer-
ences.
2. Make sure all shelf file references include the file
extension (such as .DECW$BOOKSHELF)
A pathname that does not start with a '/' or '%,' will
be interpreted as relative to the current position.
The "current position" means the location of the shelf
file containing the reference, not your default user
directory.
We hope this aids you in setting up your BNU.
We regret any inconvenience that you have encountered
while trying to use the Bookshelf Navigation Utility.
