Tuesday, August 20 @ 7:00 to 8:30 pm Illuminations Bookstore 508 486-4268 Living, Loving, and Laughing with Stress ~ The Light Approach to Stress Management Let's face it: we cannot control all the stressful events that happen at the office, at home, or in the world arena, but we can learn how to respond to these events in a healthy way. The way we respond is the most important factor determining how we fare when under stress. Thus, the real job of stress management is teaching self-management: it is an inside job. The primary aim of this presentation is to encourage us to discover, appreciate, and affirm our own inner resources for handling everything from day-to-day challenges to major crisis. An effective starting point is to recognize that we can take ourselves more lightly as we take seriously what we have to do. Keeping a wholesome sense of humor significantly lightens our load and radically changes our perspective so that we can respond to life's trials and tribulations creatively and constructively. In addition, hearty laughter is excellent for the heart, the organ that often suffers most under stress. The presenter is a humorist as well as a wellness and stress management consultant. With the light approach to stress management, he brings much to laugh about, but even more important, he introduces many other tools that help us deal with stress gracefully. Learn centering techniques to gain composure and inner strength, breathing exercises to calm the nerves and bring emotional stability, physical stretches to release tension, visualization for creating self-confidence, and meditation for bringing a healthy perspective and state of mind. The Power of Laughter for Healing, Productivity, and Creativity "Humor is not a trick, not jokes. Humor is a presence in the world -- like grace -- and shines on everybody." ~ Garrison Keillor The greatest business and spiritual leaders have exemplified and extolled a good sense of humor. They know that overseriousness lowers morale, dampens the spirit, and obstructs creativity and cooperation. Modern research has proven the benefits of humor for productivity and for both physical and mental health. The presenter shares the wisdom and humor of these greatest teachers and leaders, and the results of numerous studies being conducted at universities nationwide. Humor gives us balance against the gravity of life. In stressful times, wholesome laughter provides a healthy alternative to despair and resignation. Even in the darkest times, we can keep light inside, "a presence in the world ... that shines on everybody." Humor keeps us loose, energized, and mentally sharp. Laughter is aerobic. Norman Cousins, who used laughter to help cure himself from a life-threatening illness, called laughter "inner jogging:" it improves circulation, oxygenates the blood, and relieves pain and stress. It helps prevent heart disease, strokes, cancer, depression, and other stress-related diseases. "One who laughs, lasts!" Appropriate humor brings people together. In the words of comic, musician, and mathematician Victor Borge, "laughter is the shortest distance between two people." Learn and appreciate the benefits of humor and how to bring more humor into your life -- even into your workplace. - Laughter Is a Good Stretch, Too: Humor, Healing, and Yoga Similar to the above, but also including parallels between the benefits of humor and yoga, with an added introduction to yoga and laughing postures. - Introduction to Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT) is a body-oriented healing art that combines the science of yoga with elements of contemporary bodymind psychology. It includes assisted yoga postures, breathwork, and, optionally, verbal dialogue and focusing. It can be effective both for those who are new to personal growth and yoga and for those who wish to complement traditional forms of therapy. It is especially helpful for deepening your personal practice of yoga and for becoming more aware of the connection between your physical and emotional experience. - Play for Healing and Wholeness ~ A Workshop That's Just for Fun Many great philosophers and healers have exulted the value of play for health and wholeness, yet today play is often shunned as useless and a waste of time. Leo Buscaglia once said "The human need to play is a powerful one. When we ignore it, we feel something is missing in our lives." Explore that missing piece through pure fun, cooperative and noncompetitive play, and theater improvisation games. Appreciate and honor that funloving spirit that has led you to read this far! Explore ways to invoke your creative, genuine self.
