    LONDON, Oct 9 (Reuter) - Patric Walker, an astrologer whose horoscopes
    appeared in newspapers from Johannesburg to Hong Kong, has died aged
    64, the Evening Standard reported on Monday.

    The U.S.-born Walker, who divided his time between London and the Greek
    island of Rhodes, had been struggling with salmonella poisoning, the
    newspaper quoted doctors as saying.

    He died in his apartment in London on Sunday morning.

    "Patric literally changed the meaning of the word astrology for our
    generation," fellow astrologer Shelley von Strunckel, told the
    newspaper.

    "He took it from a tawdry, rather down-market amusement and brought it
    to reflection, elegance of language and thoughtfulness."

    The New York Times once called Walker a "Henry James in a profession of
    Danielle Steels."

    Walker, who wrote for the Evening Standard, was syndicated around the
    world, from Bahrain to Johannesburg to Hong Kong.

    He came down with salmonella -- a type of food poisoning -- during the
    summer and failed to fight it off, despite hospital treatment.

    Walker was born on September 25, 1931, a Libra. His parents were living
    in Hackensack, New Jersey at the time, having emigrated from Yorkshire
    in the 1920s.

    But the family returned to their native England, where he attended
    grammar school before going into the Royal Air Force.

    He did not become an astrologer until well into adulthood, after an
    encounter with American astrologer Helene Hoskins, who made some
    predictions that impressed him.

    He became her student and started writing horoscopes for Nova magazine
    before taking over Hoskin's column in Harper's & Queen magazine. He
    later wrote for the Daily Mirror and Associated Newspapers, publishers
    of the Daily Mail and the Evening Standard.

    Walker, a bachelor, became known as the doyen of newspaper astrologers,
    helping to popularise the style in which each of the 12 astrological
    signs has its own message for the day.

    He said he believed the other planets had magnetic influences on the
    Earth, defending his profession against critics. The work made him a
    wealthy man, and in 1979 he moved into semi-retirement at Lindos on
    Rhodes.

	Unfortunately, he failed to predict in his sign that one should take care of eating at restaurants that don't take precautions in the preparation and storage of meat! a fatal reaction to samonella poisoning doesn't say much for the UK health system. It must have struck him and weakened an already vunerable body. A reminder to us all to keep the party foods well heated or refrigerated! I read last week that you're at 200x the risk of dying from being infected with Hepatitis B thru sexual contact than from Aids! There are 2M people infected with it in the USA, many as silent carriers, with no apparent symptoms! Sorry, didn't mean to darken anyone's day, here endeth the lesson! BillM

	In Douglas Adams book, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, the hero's boss has read his horoscope which tells him lots of useful things, but fails completely to tell him that he will be shot in the chest with both barrels of a shotgun, by an electric monk from another world. You'd think an astrologer as great as Mr Walker, would be able to predict a bit of trouble though. Ms. Goodman died Saturday of complications stemming from diabetes, Penrose Hospital officials said. "Linda Goodman's Sun Signs," which examined personality types based on horoscopes, was published in 1968 and became the first book on astrology to make The New York Times best-seller list. It has sold more than 5 million copies. She followed up with "Linda Goodman's Love Signs" in 1978, "Star Signs" in 1988 and "Goobers," a spiritual mystery novel, in 1989. Mannu, the religion she founded, combined the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi with American Indian beliefs. Ms. Goodman is survived by her father and three children.

	This is not good, my friends. Might be a good time to give up astrology methinks, and take up something less dangerous, like skydiving :-) Insurance companies are going to have a little box on them now, to tick if you an astrologer, in which case you are high risk and they won't insure you. As I recall reading somewhere, Goodman and Walker were reputed to be good freinds, but cannot confirm, although it makes sense. Could there be a link here? Adam$paranoid
