I do past life regressions...you go back to a time where the events
happened that are affecting your life now. You go back to important
events. It helps to clear or release past events.

1938.2 | A distinction of value | DWOVAX::STARK | Todd I. Stark | Mon May 02 1994 16:20 | 30 |
| Note however that there is a distinction between what hypnotherapists
call 'age regression, and what is commonly called 'past life
regression.'
'Age regression' as a therapy (rather than a forensic technique for
simply trying to clarify or recover vague memories) is a
method related to the Freudian concept of relieving neurosis by
re-experiencing previously repressed childhood trauma. It is a method
held in common by Scientologists (who call it by different terms such
as 'reverie' and 'return,') and some hypnotherapists.
'Past-life regression' is however usually meant to indicate a technique
for deliberately encouraging experiences presumed outside of the
individual's own lifetime, and has more outright religious overtones not
generally found in 'current-life' age regression, and therefore is
generally considered (I believe) more directive on the part of the
hypnotist (that is, they take an even more active role in helping to
create the experience than usually found in competently performed hypnotic
'age regression'). They are looking for experiences of past lives,
whereas apparent past-life experiences sometimes occur _spontaneously_ in
normal 'current-life' age regression, and these should not be confused,
imo.
It's an interesting and often emotionally moving process in both cases,
especially if someone has never personally seen the kinds of vivid
experiences that often come out under hypnosis.

todd

| Thank you both for your replies. I've been having a recurring image
during meditation and while I dream of myself running in a green field
somewhere in Scotland or Ireland. I'm just wondering if it might be a
past life.
Do any of you know anyone who can help someone through past life
regression?

| re: .4,
I'm sorry I don't know anyone personally in New England who does this,
but I'm sure many others here do.
It's a tricky thing, because you now have a persistent fragment of an
experience that has some significance to you for some yet unknown
reason. It could be a memory, or it could be a wish. Or it could
well be a fragment of an 'alter' personality of some sort, such as
sometimes seen in far more dramatic form in dissociative states.
A 'memory recovery' specialist could certainly enhance and build on it
by various techniques; including body manipulation, guided imagery, and
hypnosis, but they would usually also be _leading_ the process,
especially if they *expect* to find a past-life in your experience
fragment.
Personally, I would be more inclined to work with the image
further in meditation or self-hypnosis and let it develop on its own
rather than to impose the complexity of a second person on the
proceedings. Unless the images became very disturbing. If there is
a cohesive memory of something there, chances are fairly
good that they will begin to emerge further on their own, in your
dreams and meditations, just as they have already begun to do.
I guess I'm a little cynical about attempts to force this process
or unduly accelerate it unless there is a serious problem arising
that needs more intervention.

todd

Nashua (phone 883-4903). It was very helpful to me.

I just picked up a book the other day that might help.
Mother Wit A Guide to Healing & Psychic Development
by Diane Mariechild
I just started reading it and so far I find the exercises
very helpful. There is also a chapter on Past Life Regression.
Mindy, if you find someone to do the regression, let us know
how it went.

1938.10 | A book with a unique distinction. | DWOVAX::STARK | Todd I. Stark | Fri May 06 1994 11:44 | 21 |
| There are a large number of recent books on the subject, but
I'm going to mention Michael Talbot's book "Your Past Lives, A
Reincarnation handbook," from Fawcett Crest, New York, since
it has the rather unique distinction of having a fairly positive
review from English teacher Peter Huston in the debunking magazine
_Skeptical_Inquirer_. He found it well written, and "an
interesting insight into a cultural phenomenon," though
pseudoscientific in parts.
Talbot reviews many of the commonly used techniques for exploring
"past lives," and claims to have revealed 20 previous lives of his
own, and lists various organizations and sources of information.
He alo includes warnings about potential hazards, reminiscent
of those given in more conventional kinds of psychological self-help
literature, about what point to seek professional help if things
turn ugly in these explorations.

todd

| I also have a friend that does past life regressions. Her name is
Debbie. I mentioned it to her this weekend and she said she would do it
if you're interested. She's a certified hypnotist...I do work with her
from time to time...She lives west of Worcester.

I just heard from Richard Greene. His telephone number has been
changed (there was a recording when I dialled) to 603-891-2053, he is
still doing his "bioenergy" work, and will be moving to Florida when
the weather gets cooler again (he said in about 5 months).
