Considering the point that Jupiter is a gas giant of around 88,000
miles in diameter I doubt if a comet striking it will make much
    difference.

This predicted event is discussed in the latest Scientific American.
The article includes a picture of the commet.

There is some discussion on this topic in :

Maybe it was the collision of a comet which caused the Red Spot ?

I wonder if there is any chance of any of these fragments colliding with
anything orbiting Jupiter, especially the moons?

come to? For extra credit, how many times over will that destroy the
Earth?

Is that a dire prediction, or should I have read that as "hypothetically
    _would_have_ destroyed the earth ?"

| | Uh sorry, I meant hypothetically. I also meant "megatons" where I
wrote "kilotons."

| | I don't think that megatons would be much more useful than kilotons
when measuring the energy release of this collision.

Not sure what you mean by "useful", Jamie, but megatons would be more
*convenient* for such a measurement (or, in this case, estimate).
Neither wouild be particularly helpful in imagining the magnitude of
the collision(s), of course, since such force is quite literally
    unimaginable.

When you have a long string of zeros does an extra three impress you
    that much?
The energy release on a light summer shower is about the same as the
earlier atomic bombs. Even the mightiest of the present ones can not
equal the energy release of a major storm. Measuring against H-bombs a
hurricane would be off the scale. So when it comes to large comets
slamming into gas giants if you express the energy release in joules,
kilotons, or megatons it is not going to make a lot of difference as
the number will, as you say, be beyond our comprehension
    Jamie.

Any comments on the potential astrological impacts of the comet
on Jupiter (and subsequently on us)?

Does anyone have an update on when exactly the comet will strike?
