Hi Deb,
You might try some magazines, such as Shaman's Drum. There are lots
of advertisements for drum-makers and I know you can get a good drum
for less money than the 2 stores you mentioned charge.
I'll be back with a reference, too.

John makes all the drums and can send you a brochure. Two
friends of mine have his Spirit Drums and they like them very
much. The Spirit Drum is a somewhat large frame drum with a
fairly thin goat skin head. It has a high pitched but full tone.
Very nice for journeying.
