| You can find wrapped sage in the health food stores. I have
saged my house to get rid of the negative energy which was in the home
from the previous owners. (smells terrible but what a difference in
the energies). I am not sure what type of sage this was. However,
I did purchase it in the health food store. I do not have any info on
birch.

| I have never heard of birch being used for anything. It's certianly possible
but not something I know. I have been taught by my teachers that there are
four sacred herbs and the way I have been taught to use them is in this
order:
Sage - clear and remove all negativity, fears, limitations, blocks
evil spirits.
Cedar - offer prayers. Cedar smoke carries prayers up to Great
Spirit.
SweetGrass - Offering thanks, allowing only good to be arround.
Then, there is tabacco, that I have been taught is a very sacred herb when
used in the right way. I've been taught to use it in prayers in sacred
events, many of which I can't talk about, but it can be used in making
prayer offerings.
It seems like sage would be usefull to you to clear negativity. I've been
taught that the sage sticks used by the new-agers are not good because they
mix herbs that should not be mixed. For instance, new agers mix sage and
lavender. The lavender has no place being there.
I've also been taught that there are different kinds of sage, both male and
female. This I don't know much about but you might want to ask in the
native_americans notes conference on node genral. I generally use any kind
of sage to clear out negativity on a daily basis. I don't pay attention to
what kind it is. I don't grow it but I buy it separetly on a loose basis and
not in a stick.
Hope this helps,
Young Owl Hatching

According to Steven McFadden, author of "Profiles In Wisdom",
the scientific benefit behind burning sage is that it produces
negative ions.

| re: .4,
I'm no pyrochemist, but I thought that _any_ open flame produces negative
ions ?
Maybe unrelated to the topic, but my understanding from some
Kabbalistic ritualists is that they attribute the effects of
burning herbs to the state of mind elicited in the
'subconscious' of the petitioner, in aid of creating a sacramental
correspondence to particular universal symbols.
In such rituals, though, there are a number of other factors involved
at the same time, not just the burning herb, so maybe this has nothing
to do with it.
kind regards,

| I don't waste time trying to justify things on a scientific basis and
waiting for science to catch up to things that have been known for 10,000
years. It works, so I do it.

Could be, Todd. I was just quoting Steve.
I burn sage (smudge?) to cleanse and energize my place, stones, etc.
...at the risk of my condo neighbors thinking I'm smoking something
interesting! (;^) It does smell somewhat like marajuana.

| I often use sage have have purchased it in leaf form and not
mixed. The sage doesn't smell great but add a bit of sweet
grass (also found at new age stores) and it's much better.

| I have used the sage at the beginning of a class and I thought it
smelled really nice. It was sage picked fresh from the desert. I have
found out that it is sagebrush I was looking for - and not birch but cedar.
Boy do I have alot to learn....Thanks for the input esp. the reference
to the native american notes.
