VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (UPI) -- A national center for exploring psychic
phenomenon, which saw its ranks crest during the New Age movement of the
late 1980s, is trimming its budget and staff due to membership declines.
The Association for Research and Enlightenment, which the psychic
Edgar Cayce founded in 1931, is reducing its staff by about 25 percent.
The center will cut staff to 85 full-time positions, down from 110 a
few months ago, said Edwin Johnson, the association's chief operating
officer.
Revenue is down by 24 percent from last year, Johnson said, and
membership now stands at about 54,000. At its peak in 1989, a direct-
mail campaign brought the association's membership to 100,000.
``All the restructuring we are doing is recognizing that a
combination of circumstances produced membership levels that were not
sustainable,'' Johnson said.
Cayce's 14,000 readings are at the heart of the center. Cayce, who
died in 1945, gave the readings while in a trance on subjects ranging
from the diagnosis of illnesses to theories of reincarnation.
Members use the readings, filed according to subject, by mail or by
going to the center's library.
For the near future, Johnson said, the center will focus on better
serving current members instead of expanding. The association has
eliminated no services. The center also will continue to publish books
and its bi-monthly magazine, Venture Inward, and to sponsor conferences.
Johnson said the direct-mail campaign was too ambitious. It was
intended to tap into national interest generated by the publication of
books and a television special by Shirley MacLaine, the actress and
mystical trendsetter.

Ah, ok. I'm glad that's over with, now lets get back to
the interesting stuff. You know - gods, goddesses, conciousness,
work-on-self, dragons, the so-called paranormal, and
anchovies. ;-)
