This is hardly limited to Southeast Asia. Or might you be a bit more specific
about the geography and/or politics?
>Lords Of Chaos ... work your magick once again...
Reminds me of a story ...
An architect, a doctor, a lawyer, and a politician were all relaxing at an outing
one day, when the subject came up about which of their professions was the
oldest.
Waxing Biblical, the doctor said, "It's obvious. Medicine is. According to
the story in Genesis, the Lord removed one of Adam's ribs to form Eve. That's
clearly a surgical procedure, and that's at the start of the human race."
The architect said, "If that's the way you want to argue it, then medicine
clearly isn't the oldest. For the Lord made the Garden of Eden for the animals,
and ultimately Adam, to live in. Landscaping clearly falls in the realm of
architecture. And that preceded your `surgical' example."
The lawyer shook his head. "According to that line of reasoning, the legal
profession is older. At the beginning, the Lord created order out of chaos, and
that clearly is what Law does."
And the politician just laughed.
When asked why he was laughing, the politician answered, "Who do you suppose
created all the chaos?"

I don't pretend to know what this note is about...
on Dien Bien Phu, however, it's the place you might remember,
Jamie (you're old enough ;-) ) where in the late 50's and early
60's we'd hear about Buddhist monks self-imolating (setting themselves
on fire.) It was a part of Vietnam always in the news, whether by
the French or early-U.S.

Back in school, I wore a POW bracelet with the name S.Sgt. Steven Adams
on it. The last time I was at the Wall in D.C., he was still a
POW/MIA. It was a couple of years ago. He was listed as missing very
early in the war - early '60's.
If anyone hears anything about him, please let me know.

No, it's not new and I should think that films by
someone of the calibre of Wim Wenders must be easy
to find on video. And yes, definitely worth seeing.
(Also has Peter 'Columbo' Falk playing an interesting
side role).
I'll look up the date if I can remember.
