I wasn't sure whether to Note here or WIDGET::UFOS (I might put something there
too).

I read with interest a section in "Without A Trace" by Charles Berlitz, which
described the well-known Philadelphia Experiment: an experiment to render a US
destroyer radar-invisible by use of very strong magnetic fields. DeGaussing
generators were used to envelope the ship in pulsating & non-pulsating fields.
Upon starting the generators a green glow was seen which soon covered the ship,
which to everyones amazement proceeded to become invisible (the only visible 
sign was the indentation of the ship's hull i the water. The ship was also
observed to appear at a dry-dock many hundreds of miles away, and then disappear
again! The experiment was a complete success on the ship, but a complete failure
on the crew. Many suffered side-effects such as becoming "stuck" whereupon they
would "freeze" and the only solution was for others nearby to "lay-on-hands" to
try and free the person. Some unfortunates were "frozen" for many months. Others
spontaneously became invisible (one was seen to walk through a wall at a bar and
was not seen thereafter). A fair amount of the crew went completely mad - and I
hear that some of the horrors seen by the crew during the experiment were truly
indescribable (not unlike the things described by H.P.Lovecraft - (however this
last piece of info. is only hearsay).

A notable UFO investigator (I am afraid I don't have the book with me for refs 
at present) had written a book about UFOs within which was a section regarding
the above. He was invited to a meeting at a top US Navy R&D base with regard to
his book. When he arrived, a copy of his book which had come into the hands of
the Navy top-brass was being handed around. The book had been hand-annotated by
3 people (unknown) who used different coloured inks to distinguish themselves.
The nature of the notes with regard to the effects noted from the above, had a
previous-knowledge aspect i.e. the notes were not considering what effects were
implied by the experiment, they were actually commenting on how accurate the 
book had been in describing effects which the annotators were familiar with. The
annotators also appeared to have "cosmic-knowledge" spanning many thousands of
years, describing for example a previous destruction of the Earth's surface in
a interplanetary war and previous civilisations. The book was so noteworthy as
to be circulated around the pentagon! Limited copies of the annotated version
may still be obtained by researchers. The author of the book recognised one of
the annotators handwriting/style as a Mr.Allen (or Allende) with whom he had
been in contact when researching his book. A subsequent attempt by the US Navy
to trace Mr.Allen was fruitless (probably to the benefit of Mr.Allen - see next
paragraph).

Finally, (sorry for the long note), a trend was described in "Without A Trace"
which is very disturbing, as if the results of the Phil. Exp. were not already
disturbing enough! It seems that UFO/parapsychic investigators customarily
receive visits from "Men In Black" (mysterious olive-skinned humanoids who 
appear and disappear in large cadillacs very abruptly) who warn them not to 
continue their research, whenever the researcher is nearing a particularly
astounding conclusion to their work. If they continue, they receive further 
visits and threatening phone calls - and even eventually "disappear", "commit
suicide" or get shot by an unknown gunman (one researcher was shot through his
groundfloor appartment window). Another had completed his research into the
effects of the Phil. Exp. and was actually traveling by car to give his final
papers to a fellow scientist when he (apparently) just stopped his car, and
committed suicide. Needless to say, his papers were missing when he was found &
they have not been (publicly) recovered.

My 3 paragraphs - assuming they relate to true facts - raise many disturbing
and astounding issues: including magnetic field influence to attain invisibility
and instantaneous transportation, the existence of non-human elements amongst
our population (and hence their aims?, their source?, benevolent/harmful?, their
nature - (spiritual/physical/extra-terrestrial)? ), the apparent cover-up & non-
advancement policy imposed by (?... who), why is work into paranormal areas
restricted (is it dangerous - planet-wide?, too soon?, economically disasterous?
 and so on...).

Any comments would be appreciated 	%^)	.

	Interesting..... Thanks for adding it, In the entry you said the ship was observed to appear and then disappear in a dry dock a few hundred miles away. Did you mean at the time, or during the exp.

	Jim What an interesting book. I don't know all that much about the Philadelphia(sp?) experimant. Was it a real event or fiction or is that still debated?? I have to read the book I guess, thanks for the note you have peaked my interest. =8*) shannon

	I did not see when I entered the note that there was already a topic for this in WIDGET::UFOS. Take a look here, there is some fascinating stuff. Apparently C.Berlitz's material should be taken with a bucket of salt ;^) - I will bear this is mind in future research. With regard to the appearance of the ship at dry dock - this was during the course of the experiment. The Phil. Exp. note is WIDGETS::UFOS (Topic #36). Has anybody got any further reading re: the Phil. Exp. which is not by C. Berlitz? - JIM CAD*

	Re .7 -< Seeing is Believing! >- Congratulations, not many notes make me laugh out loud. A perfect title for an experiment in invisibility. Someone asked if there were any other books on the subject _not_ written by that nice Mr Berlitz. Well I looked through my library and almost found one. It is "The Philadelphia Experiment" By Charles Berlitz and William Moore. It was first published in 1979. Jamie.

	This is nothing to do with the actual case, but the movie _The Philadelphia Experiment_ was on TV here in LA this weekend. During a motel room scene, where one of the two "time travelers" was watching TV, there came on a DIGITAL commercial! It said something about Digital Equipment Corp. and asked people to call 1-800-DIGITAL for a store near them. Guess DEC knows what movies people are likely to watch!

	There were several SF authors working on a project in the Philadelphia navy yards during the time period this supposedly happened (Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Theodore Sturgeon, among others). According to each of them, when asked about it, they say "This never happened. If it did, we would have known about it, because we were working in those secret groups. We wish it had happened, but unfortunately everything we were doing was pretty boring." (not a direct quote, BTW).
