This note for US citizens:
The other night I heard two addresses being presented to write to "Any
Soldier" involved in Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia.
It looks like they're going to be there through the end-of-December
holidays, so here are the addresses if anyone here would like to write
a letter and/or send a card:

The broadcast stated that one zipcode is for one branch of the service
while the other zipcode is for the others, but I didn't catch which
branches went with which zipcodes. If you could send two cards/letters
- one to each zipcode - that would be great.
A few of the soldiers interviewed have said that while they appreciate
mail from their loved ones, they are even more heartened by the mail
they receive from people addressing their mail to "Any Soldier".

I have the same addresses. It is suggested that the mail be addressed
to "Any Service Member"

(for land troops) (for troops on-board ship)
When mail is received, it is distributed equally among the servicemen
and -women.

It seems to be taking about 2 months to get mail over to our
service men. Regardless of what it is. It appears **MANY**
(never too many tho) people are sending food and gifts and
because of the amount being sent it takes along time to get
there.

Hi All!
It's nice to see the interest shown here for our Service Members over
on the Beach!
I have a nephew who is over there, so I have a great interest!
I have sent a couple of packeges to him so far, with plenty of stuff
in them so he could share with his buddies.
A friend of mine gave me this article from her local paper which I
thought might be of interest to anyone who is sending packages, or that
may be donating to a larger scale package drive. I think this article
is referring to Northbor, MA, but the ideas are universal.
" DESERT SHIELD:
The library is collecting books and magazines for the Desert Shield
soldiers in Saudi Arabia. They are also collecting soap, deoderant
(unscented), razor blades, toothpaste, gatorade juices, flea/tick
collars and spray, sun screen, video and audio cassettes, packaged
popcorn, snacks, cookies and candy. Your help is needed. Please
contribute for the soldiers."
I'm not sure if the Gatorade juices means bottles, or the powdered
stuff. I would assume powdered, as they have plenty of drinking water
over there.
Here is a further list of things my nephew has said would be
appreciated.
Socks (plain white tube socks are fine. The sand eats socks quickly
when it get in the boots)
writing paper, envelopes and pens
Plastic buckets (to rinse out socks etc.. A lot of them are not near
towns to do laundry.)
Playing cards
My nephew specifically asked for canned sardines, kippered snacks and
smoked oysters. I think any kind of decent tasting canned snack would
be appreciated.
BTW: The last package I sent weighed 13 lbs., and only cost me $3.50
to nail to New York.
I am planning on making up a bunch of smaller packages and sending
them to "Any Service Member" with a letter enclosed in each. I hope my
efforts help in some small way.
Thanx for listening to me ramble on. I'm usually "read only" here, but
this note really touched home for me.
