1275.0. "bear dreams" by CHET::MACDONALD () Fri Jun 08 1990 15:45

I've always enjoyed dreaming and never really thought much about
interpetation but recently I've have more than one dream about bears.
I'm just wondering if there is any specific meaning attached to the
bear. In both dreams my dogs were important characters although in
each dream they played very different parts.

    Thanks

At about this time last year I was also having nightly dreams about
bears. A friend suggested a form of pathworking based on some american
indian studies she was doing. Shortly after I adopted the Bear as my
spirit helper and Totem animal. Maybe your dreams have nothing what so
ever to do with the bears, and perhaps the more important characters
were your dogs. What were their parts in the dreams?
Protectors/helpers, or perhaps just good friends and comforting
    presences?

You were wondering if there is any specific meaning attached to the
bear. If you dream about a bear, the bear certainly has one or more
specific meanings, but your meanings may not be the same as anyone
else's meanings; and what "bear" means to you may differ from one dream
to the next. (Have you read note 1260? That dream contains a talking
bear.) Bears - as aninmals - have certain general characteristics
which most people are aware of, but even then there's a vast difference
between a teddy bear and a grizzley bear. And just begin to imagine
the scope of our associations with "bear" - for example: bear of a man,
dancing bear, Chicago Bear, bear rug, bear hug, bear grass, Bear-cat
scanner, bearings, bear (carry), bear (endure), bear (give birth to),
bare (uncovered), bare (reveal). And bear in mind that to a stock-
broker "bear" is a type of market, but to an astronomer "bear" is a
    constellation.

It's possible, too, that "bear" has such a specific association for
you that it's meaning is always the same. Pretend that your were
brought up hearing, "John is a bear." Now if every so often you dream
about a whole field of bears, you are probably dreaming about John,
whose bear-like character has remained stable year after year after
    year.

You may be right about the dogs as they are really the most important
thing in my life. In one dream they were protecting me and although
it was a very intense dream it was very enjoyable and will in fact
be the basis for some literary work
In the second dream I was trying to protect them...a very frustrating
dream as I could not get in touch with anyone to come and take the bear
    away.

    re:2
I never even thought of all the meanings associated with bears! In
fact I would consider both "my" bears to be generic although very
unfriendly.. I do know that the second one was a black bear and
reminded me alot of the stuffed bears we used to get as kids!
I did raed note 1260 but didn't feel anything in particular fell in
line for me. Oh well I guess I'll just have to accept it for whatever
    it was....I was just curious.

    Thanks!
