It pains me to think that any one using this file would be so
narrow-minded as to harras any one else here.

Your entries/thoughts/experiences are valued Lennice.
I respect and support your decision 110% to continue or discontinue
your entries as you feel is in your best interest.
May the harassment be transmuted to a higher, more loving activity.
May the harasser go in peace.

I'll miss your notes. You've been a breath of fresh air and

| Lennice,
If you are being harrassed off-line, that is a capitol offense and
whoever it is, please knock it off asap. It hurts all noters when VAX
notes are abused.
If someone is saying something in this or another conference that you
feel is harrass, ent, perhaps you would consider confronting the
perpetrator on-line so we can tar and feather him/her en masse?

| I'm usually a reader rather than a contributor to this file, but this
has really angered me that you feel intimidated through harrassment.
Your opinions and your contributions to this file are as valued as
anyones, please don't leave for this reason. You'll have only resulted
in a victory for this individual and that's nothing to celebrate.

I have experienced thru life that not many things are black and white,
there is always some grey areas... Let us not be too quick to jump on the
negative bandwagon. Some people have different ways of looking at things,
and isn't that what these notesfiles are all about? We don't have to accept
it, we don't even have to *read* it.
Lennice,I think you should give us another try, as you can see by the
previous responses noone is out to 'hurt' anyone here.
Whatever you decide I wish you the best.
love,
Meredith

| Please, everybody, let this drop. I humbly submit that no one
can address the issue of my safety but me. No one person can
speak for the intentions of everyone in this file. I purposefully
did not give the details of the incident becuase I don't wish to
discuss them. If the other party wishes to give his version, he
is welcome to do so. Please remember that is only his version,
and contemplate his reasons for giving it.
This is extremely painful for me. Please, give me the respect of
honoring my wishes in this matter, and allow me to make my own
choices. I don't want to be pressured into justifying myself.
I don't feel safe. I shouldn't have to justify that. I am doing
the only thing I know to do to protect myself. Please leave me in
peace.

when all eyes are upon they guilty party.
I invite anyone who cares to harrass me to do so I'll have your name in

and I will push for action.

Imho, I think it would be best to honor Lennice's request and leave
this subject in peace. I believe she knows what's best for her and that
people care. So to push the subject further, regardless of all the
good intentions, would be dishonoring her integrity, and perhaps
not our best course of action at this time.
peace,

| So much for Valueing Differences.
I sometimes think Notesfiles such as these (UFO, etc.) which deal
in non-mainstream subjects have registered access, even for the
non-participators. I will tell you I thought long & hard before
I entered my first reply in DEJAVU, even tho' I usually take a
Show Me attitude. You'll get few bosses to admit it, but
participation in conferences such as these can be detrimental to
your career. Many contributors to this file have entered their
feelings & beliefs for all to see, which is a brave thing to do.
Unfortunately, the more straight-laced can take offense and alter
their perceptions of you in a negative way. Fortunately, the
sharing continues, that being the only way to bring about a positive
change in those perceptions. Although Science Fiction is now "out
of the closet", I still am reticent at times to admit to reading
it. Old habits die hard, I guess.
Also, unlike topics such as software upgrades & hardware problems
and where's the best place to get a steak dinner, emotions can run
very high when dealing in beliefs; some people know what's best
for others and actively pursue converting others. It is important
to maintain one's perspective; discussion is the mainstay of a
Personal Topics conference, and I'd be surprised if one-dimensional
(words on a computer screen) propagandizing would convert anyone.
Off-line discussion is obviously acceptable, harrassment is not,
and anything posted in a notesfile (and undeleted by the ever-
vigilant moderators) is no justification for that harrassment.
Like a hockey penalty, protesting is not for the current one, but
the next one. Someone has devalued Lennice enough for her to leave
this conference. For shame. The harrasser may consider that a
victory, but I can assure him/her it is not. What you can do to
someone else can also be done to you. Believe it.
So I'll stop speechifying now; don't want this reply to get as
lengthy as some of Topher's... :-) :-) :-)

Perhaps we should take this discussion to note 1166. Or, if people
wish, they can send mail regarding their thoughts on the matter.
I would like to do something to prevent future occurances of this type.
It's not an isolated incident by the way, either to this file or others.

Bill,
I think rather than suggesting that people contact the individual
off-line, that perhaps it would be best to respect the wishes of the
individual involved, i.e.
1. leave her alone
2. drop this subject
In other words, maybe you should write-lock this note.

| re .17 (Mary)
I sorry, I wasn't very clear about what I was suggesting.
Let me try again. I think there needs to be a general discussion in
note 1166, which is titled "Are this conference's guidelines adequate?".
I wasn't suggesting people should contact the individual off-line.
What I was trying to say was - that if people felt they didn't (for
whatever reason) want to enter into an open discussion in note 1166, that
they could send _me_ mail directly. I'm looking for feedback on this
issue, what do you people think should be done about this type of
situation?
Please move any further discussion to note 1166. This topic is now
write locked.
