| Hi Meredith!
Thanks for the pointer to International Gem. I called them and
unfortunately they do not do gemstone cutting and weren't able
to recommend anyone to me, so I'll keep looking.
Someday I'll get up that way to check them out as I've heard a lot
about Int'l Gem.
Thanks again, and yes it was a lot of fun panning for these gemstones!
I'll be going back down in September and plan to make a special trip
to do it again.

| Karen...Heres the name of a person in DEC who cuts gemstones...
Howard Ewing, DTN 264-6076
Be works in Merrimac NH and lives in Nashua NH.....
Im a mineral collector and just read this file for any references
to crystals.....
Ive been to Howards house and have seen the stones hes cut and there
beautiful......hes cutting some anethyst that I found in Deer Hill
as well as some smokey quartz from Mt. Mountain..
He charges $6 to cut a stone.....if its over 3 carots theres an
additional $2 per carot.....
Once you give him the stones it takes from 6-9 months because he
does a lot of that, plus hes got a full time job....
BUT.....hes been in Europe on business for the last three months
and wont be back home until July....Im sure if you call him there
he'll be glad to examine the stones to see IF they can be cut, and
if so, Im sure will do a beautiful job.
Regards,
Rick

| Rick,
Thanks for the recommendation. I look forward to talking with
Howard and finding out more about his work.
Have to admit that I'd love to have the stones cut sooner than 6 or 9
months, but I definately will contact him once he returns from Europe
and see what he says and how his schedule looks.

| Karen,
Panning for stones sounds like fun. Do you know of any place in this
area (NH, MA, Maine, or Vermont) where it could be done?
I saw ads in Calif/Nevada last week about panning (I assumed it was
for Gold as it was near the motherlode), but didn't realize you could
find gemstones in that manner!
Thanks,
Ro

1265.8 | Yes, there's places in N.E. to find gems/stones | CARTUN::BERGGREN | exploring and enjoying Creation... | Sun Jun 03 1990 13:42 | 21 |
| Hi Ro!
I have recently heard of areas in New England where you can go
gem hunting/mining, but don't know of any exact locations. I'm sure
there are geology clubs in this area that can be a wealth of information.
Normally, one does not go "panning" for gemstones, but at this particular
place in Georgia, they had brought in truckloads of dirt from an area
in North Caroloina and we shifted through pails of that. I think it
would be much more exciting to find "virgin" gems in their
"natural habitats".
Since I was a kid I've always loved gems and stones, and almost bought
a tumbler when I was a teenager, so I am going to research this further.
(Then I got interested in "boys" and, well, you can guess what happened
to my interest in stones. ;-))
As I find out more information, I'll keep you posted!

| Thanks Karen. Looking forward to learning more on the subject.
BTW, I brought you back a stone from a rock shop in Nevada. I asked
for something that was specific to the area and the shop owner
suggested this stone (and now I've forgotten the name). It is aqua
in color and is mined in Nevada. It has not been tumbled.
However, Kendra 'borrowed' it for her science project. She is using my
crystal/stone collection in one of her Medicine Card spreads. The
stones work nicely with a Native American motif bandana I bought her
on the trip for the project. There is a circle design in the middle
where the stones are placed in the appropriate places for the reading.
The long-awaited science fair is this Thursday so I should have your
stone back after that!!!
See you soon,
Ro

| Thanks for the stone Ro!
I think that's great that Kendra is including it in her Medicine Card
science project. And finally the big day is this Thursday. Great!
My very best to Kendra! I know her project will be a *big* success.

p.s. Terry K bought a tumbler over the weekend. We've got the bug
I think. :-)) I guess it's probably time for the stone/gem
conference.

1265.11 | Lots of NE sites | ESCROW::COCHRANE | Rack and Rune | Tue Jun 05 1990 13:51 | 14 |
| Hi,
There are indeed many areas which are suitable for "gem hunting"
in New England. Many of them are in North Central Maine, the
White Mountains of New Hampshire and Western Mass, but there
are other scattered about. Maine is particularly good, as
there are several good mine sites and gem and mineral stores
grouped in one area - makes for a nice week-end trip ;-)
If there is interest, I can check out my gem hunters guide at
home, and post some sites.

pretty neat!)

Hi,
I would like to be contacted if you plan a trip to the mountains. And
interested in any specific locations. Thanks Mary-Michael!
Karen sounds like you had a great time. Did you plan the trip just to
go digging or was it an added bonus on your vacation?

| Roslyn,
The trip to Georgia was not planned to go digging. It was an
added bonus and came about spontaneously! I'm going back in
September and am in the process of arranging a more extensive
rockhounding effort with a friend and perhaps his daughter.
