| There is an article in National Geographic (several years ago) that
outlines the entire history including current attempts to get to
the bottom. There is a legend that says seven people will die before
the treasure is found. Six have bit the dust so far. I don't recall
the exact issue, maybe someone else can help out, but it was very
interesting.

Also, Edgar Rowe Snow (who collected stories about New England)
wrote about it in one of his collections.

Oops, that was it, Smithsonian not National Geographic. If any of you
are scrambling through your NG's to find the article, it isn't there.

Another recent article was in Smithsonian Magazine, try a library.
Sometime midsummer or fall 88. I thought I had extracted & posted
here, but obviously not. At a guess, the Smithsonian article is
the one RD digested. I think I have passed that issue on already.
One (spoiler) theory starts from the time of the orignal report
(1790ish) and argues thusly:
Who would have had something to hide, engineering skill,
manpower, and who might have dug it up (leaving the depression)
shortly before 1790??
Answer: (proposed...)
The Royal Navy. They had payroll funds, official records, etc.
The rebels were raiding into Canada, and had lots of privateers
on the high seas. A safe hidey hole was needed. Oak Island
would fit...
I hope theres something there. It would be more fun...

| I have to Smithsonian at home and will post a detailed report soon.
Although the Smithonian covers the topic fairly well, the best account
of Oak Island that i have read is contained in a book called "This
Baffling World." I do not remember the author but it contains many
mysterious happenings from around the world. I know the book is out
of print and I lost my copy a few years ago.

| There is quite a good "chapter" on this in an excellent book entitled:
"Open Files", it was published in Britain by Orbis Publishing of London
and was edited by Peter Brookesmith. Sorry forgot to copy down the
copyright but it was mid-80's I think. The book is a collection of
articles from a magazine called The Unexplained, which I've never seen
a copy of -- I presume it's British also. The chapter in question
is entitled "Oak Island Money Pit" and appears to have originally been
three articles by Edward Horton. I thought that the book was overall
quite excellent (I can't say the same for the volume Strange Talents,
which though drawn from the same source, seemed full of inaccuracies
and a total lack of critical thought -- give me mysteries with some
meat on them and I will feast delighted, but please don't give me
only a fairy feast of vapor).

1126.11 | A nice place to visit but . . . | CAIRN::HARRIS | | Fri Sep 15 1989 18:36 | 6 |
| I've been by Oak Island. It is just off the coast of Nova Scotia, about half
way between Yarmouth and Halifax (a beautiful drive, by the way, like Maine
was before the tourists arrived). I first read about it in the 1960s in a
Reader's Digest article. Fairly ingenious method of protecting "treasure" if I
recall. Flood the place if the seal is breached.
