1123.0. "Looking for MicroVAX leads ...." by LESCOM::KALLIS (Time takes things.) Tue Sep 05 1989 17:24

                 -<anything unusual and not embarrassing?>-

I'm starting this over because it generated a lot of confusion.
I'm asking this as a personal favor.

There are enough different folk that participate here that maybe
    something will spring to mind.

The Low End Systems group is looking for interesting ways to publicize
the MicroVAX family. One thought is if there are some very unusual
applications and/or situations involving MicroVAX computers that
    a) it's proper and appropriate to talk about [obviously, nothing
classified, or nothing that could be construed as an "inappropriate"
use (either of questionable practice or something that could embarrass
the corporation), and b) a user would be willing to talk about
    or would let us publicize.

Please let us know first before contacting a user so that we can
make evaluations without raising user expectations (in case what
appears at first as an interesting use turns out not to be).

If you can think of any, please VAXmail them to me. This is a somewhat
unusual request, but if anyone can supply raw data for us to evaluate,
    we'd appreciate it.

I realize this is a bit unusual for this most unusual of Conferences,
but I just wondered what out-of-the-ordinary MicroVAX uses you might
    have heard of ...

    Thanks.

    Steve Kallis, Jr.

A VAX 750 was used to test the design of the America's Cup winner. And
onboard a chase ship a microvax was used to montior the performance or
the yacht in actual test runs on the wet.

I'm sure this isn't what you want, however I just heard
last week that there are two ancient microvaxes upstairs somewhere
that are being used only as plant stands.

(Coincidentally, I got this in the mail this morning.)

The Whitbread is an around the world Maxi yacht race. F&P is a
New Zealand yacht somewhere about 6th now after aboput 2 weeks of racing.
There's about 4 weeks left to the first leg. This is a portion of an article
I found in :SAILING. Talk about environmental testing!

The estimated computering power necessary to run the ORCA programme
efficently was large and way beyond an ordinary desktop system, so the Digital
Microvax 2000 computer was recommended and used.It was a quantum leap to
consider putting a powerful computer like a microvax on board a yacht that
would expreince everything from from equatorial heat and thunderstorms to polar
ice and gales.Special light wieght equipment provided the computer with a 240v
supply.

In essence the programme takes forecast weather maps, calculates the
wind strengths and directions and then predict's the distance's F+P can sail
over a certian time period in many directions. The programme, using the
historical database set up by Gordon, picks the best direction to sail.Fisher &
Paykel also has on board 2 weather fax's the image is entered into the computer
and then reproduced on the Vt330. Logically it would have been to more
convenient to have land based computers directly transmit weather information
in digital form to the yacht based system but this breaks the rule prohibit
outside assistance to the race yachts and the whitbread committee actuall
banned systems that went outside the spirit of ocean racing - independence.

There is a MicroVAX II that has been or is being made space-flight
ready. I can't remember the name of the system integrator involved,
but if you're interested it would be easy for me to find out.
