1089.0. "I Can Relate To That" by NATASH::BUTCHART (Intergalactic Elephant) Fri Jul 21 1989 15:08

One of things of abiding interest to many people is synastry, the
astrological analysis of relationships. People who feel the
astrological model is valid often wonder about the astrological
    "compatibility indicators" with another person.

Without obtaining the birth data of the person you're interested in,
and having his/her birth chart cast and compared with your own, there
isn't a reliable way to analyze the interaction astrologically. There
are no hard-and-fast rules that are simple and work without knowing
both your natal charts, (i.e., "Sun Signs of the same element, such as
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are always compatible"). You may have had
your own horoscope cast but without the other's complete horoscope
you're flying blind trying to analyze your relationship astrologically.

So what _can_ one tell about your relationships from your own horoscope?
The answer is: plenty. You may not be able to analyze your partner
without his/her horoscope, but if you have your own, you can figure out
what your own relating patterns are. You can figure out if relating
and interacting is a primary life activity/learning arena. You can't
tell whether or not a given relationship is "karmic" in nature, but you
_can_ tell if _your_ seeming karma involves learning to relate well.

So I thought I'd put in this note, for those of you who have had your
chart cast (either by an astrologer, or using the hand-dandy astrology
program floating around the net). And what I'll list how to tell if
relating is a major thing for you.

Before getting into the specifics, let's get into jargon :-).
Here are the terms I'll be using in the ensuing replies, and (briefly)
    what they mean.

(Planetary) Ruler	Each sign of the Zodiac is said to have a planet
whose energies are most like those of the given
sign. That planet is said to "rule" that sign.
Each sign is given a planetary ruler; since there
are only 10 (known) planets, and 12 signs, two
planets are traditionally said to "rule" two
signs instead of one. Those two are Venus (said
to rule Taurus & Libra) and Mercury (said to rule
    			Gemini & Virgo).

Here is the list of signs and their planetary
    			rulers:

    			Aries Mars
    			Taurus Venus
    			Gemini Mercury
    			Cancer Moon
    			Leo Sun
    			Virgo Mercury
    			Libra Venus
    			Scorpio Pluto
    			Sagittarius Jupiter
    			Capricorn Saturn
    			Aquarius Uranus
    			Pisces Neptune

House A totally human-made construct that the astrologer
uses to determine in _what area of life_ the
planetary energies manifest for a person. You
never know the houses of your chart unless you
have it cast, because it is dependent on the time
and place of your birth as well as the date.

House Cusp The starting point, by degree and minute of
celestial longitude (in the 360-degree Zodiac)
    			for each house.

House Ruler The planetary ruler of the sign on the cusp of
each house. Example: if Aries is on the cusp of
a given house, the House Ruler of that House is
    			Mars.

Chart Ruler The planetary ruler of your rising sign. Example:
if you have Capricorn rising, Saturn is your
    			Chart Ruler.

Sun Ruler The planetary ruler of the sign in which your
Sun is located. Example: if your Sun is in Cancer
your Sun's Ruler is the Moon.

Moon Ruler The planetary ruler of the sing in which your
Moon is located. Example: if your Moon is in
Scorpio, your Moon's Ruler is Pluto.

Chart Dispositor	The "ultimate" planetary ruler of a chart. Very
few charts have a final dispositor!

Chart Angles	The cusps of the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th Houses.
These are considered the most important houses,
and their cusps are based on the horizon (1st &
    			4th) and the celestial meridien (4th & 10th).

Ascendent The exact minute and degree of your rising sign,
the sign that was coming up on the eastern horizon
at the moment of your birth.

Descendent The exact miniute and degree of your setting sign,
the sign that was going down on the western horizon
at the moment of your birth.

Aspects Angular relationships expressed in degrees of
celestial longitude between the planets in your
chart. The 360 degree circle of the Zodiac is
used to calculate them. Not all of your planets
are in aspect to all the others. Aspects between
planets connect the energies of the two parts of
your Self that they represent into a kind of
    			dialogue.

Configuration	3 or more planets whose aspects create a pattern,
or picture in the chart. Once drawn in they are
easy to see. Major patterns include: Grand
Trines, Grand Squares, T-Squares, Trines, Yods,
    			Kites, Grand Sextiles.

Chart Keystone	A term of my own, which I use to designate the
planet in the chart with the most aspects to the
most other planets. Important, because that
planet's energies will affect many different
    			parts of your Self.

Moon's Nodes	Two points in space that mark the intersection of
the Moon's orbital path around the Earth with the
Earth's orbital path around the Sun. (When we
have new and full moons on these points, we have
eclipses, because the shadows cast by the three
bodies are the most exact.) Each birth chart
has two nodes, opposite each other in the chart.

Nodal Rulers	The planetary rulers of the signs in which your
Moon's Nodes are located. Example: if your
Moon's Nodes are in Virgo/Pisces, the Nodal Rulers
    			are Mercury and Neptune.

Venus The planet in the chart often most associated with
our relational ability: our responsiveness, our
affectionate nature, "the people and things we
cherish" (to quote the Cosmic Muffin :-)).

Libra The sign in the chart most associated with our
relational ability: our urge for balance, harmony,
    			fairness, one-to-one relating, equality.

Stellium 4 or more planets within 10 - 15 degrees of each
other in the same sign. A cluster like this
indicates a strong focus of energy in the sign
and house where it occurs. Not every chart has
    			a stellium.

Intercepted Signs	A sign pair (always opposing signs) each of whose
full 30 degrees is contained within a single house.
No house cusp degree crosses any degree of an
intercepted sign. This is pretty common in
charts of people born anywhere but the tropics.

Mutual Reception	Two planets in each other's signs. Example:
a chart with Uranus in Cancer and Moon in Aquarius.
Not all charts have mutual receptions.

Outer Planets	Commonly known (to astrologers) as follows:
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Even
though astronomically Mars is also an outer planet
(i.e., outside the Earth's orbit) it is called
    			one of the "personal planets".

1089.1What to look forNATASH::BUTCHARTIntergalactic ElephantFri Jul 21 1989 15:3357
The basic thing I look for when trying to determine if relating is a
key issue for a person is a dominant emphasis on Venus energy or 7th
House activity. Note: The 7th House is opposite the 1st house, its
cusp also called the Descendent; it is a major indicator of relating
patterns and qualities we look for in partners. And everyone has a 7th
House; we all relate :-). But below is the list of factors that
indicate (to me, when I'm analyzing a chart) that relating is a _major
life issue_. If three or more of these factors exist in your own birth
chart it's almost certain that relating is a major life issue. I'll
define these in more detail in ensuing replies.

Sun, Moon, Chart Ruler, Moon's Nodes or Nodal Rulers in Libra
	or 7th House

Venus is Sun Ruler, Moon Ruler, Chart Ruler, Nodal Ruler or 7th
	House Ruler

Sun or Moon is 7th House Ruler (Capricorn or Aquarius Rising)

7th House Ruler is also Sun Ruler, Moon Ruler or Nodal Ruler

Venus or 7th House Ruler is chart dispositor or keystone

	7th House Ruler in 7th, 1st or 12th House

12th House Ruler in 7th House

Libra on a chart angle (Ascendent or Descendent particularly
	powerful)

7th House Ruler conjunct a chart angle

A 7th House or Libra stellium of planets

Libra or 7th House contains the focal planet of configuration
(most powerful probably the Yod & T-Square) or such a potential
	configuration's empty degree

7th House Ruler in major aspect to or in mutual reception with Sun,
Moon, Chart Ruler, Nodes or Nodal Rulers (major aspects are
	conjunction, opposition, trine, square)

Venus or 7th House Ruler in major aspect to or in mutual reception
	with any outer planet

Intercepted signs in 1st House & 7th House

Intercepted planets in 7th House (most powerful would include
Sun, Moon, Rulers of both, Chart Ruler, 7th House Ruler, Nodes,
    	or Nodal Rulers)

1st or 7th House ruler intercepted

7th House sign linked with either 6th or 8th House sign

1089.2My chart????????OCTOP1::PLOETZPaula PloetzFri Jul 21 1989 17:0912
Do any of you "cast charts?" I've always been interested in
finding out about this for myself, but never knew anyone who was
capable of doing it. Also, how do you know the person knows what
    they are talking about?

    I was born at 3:30 am on May 20, 1959. I consider myself a
Taurus, but very close to Gemini as far as any descriptions go
    from readings I've done.

    Thanks,
