1013.0. "Hardy Old Dub." by USWAV1::CHAPLAIN () Tue Mar 28 1989 06:09

The following is from the memory of an increasingly preoccupied
and occasionally befuddled mind, so forgive the unusual number of
    question marks.

A number of years ago I heard (read?) a news story concerning
two(?) men, properly equipped, who were climbing what I believe to
have been Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Given that this mountain
is the highest peak in Africa (more than 19,000'), the climbers
were appropriately attired with alpine parkas, scaling boots, etc.
As I remember the story, these two men made the summit and were
on their way down when they passed an old(?) man dressed in nothing
more than the typical cloth wrap and sandals who apparently was
on his way UP the icy mountainside. They stopped and exchanged words
and the climbers warned the old man that if he continued climbing
the mountain, dressed as he was, he wouldn't get far or he would
die in his attempt to reach the summit. As I remember, he waved
them off, and when they asked his name, he stated something to the
effect that very soon they, and the rest of the world, will know
    who he is. (???)
I was just curious to know if anyone else has heard of this story,
and whether or not an unidentified corpse has been found on Mount
    Kilimanjaro. :^)

I thought so at first also... But then considered it could
be wrong Freq. (UHF,VHF,?). Comming in via Amplitude Mod. and I
am trying to work w/ Freq. mod. .... I perhaps have a dish which
would mean I have thousands of stations to search through......
and the one I'm looking for is scrambled... or some jerk attached
a multiplexer to my rig! and didn't tell me. Well I guess thats
what you can expect if your working without a net. ;-)

Tanzania. Very close to the Kenyan border, but still Tanzania. Unless

1013.11What I've seen at KilimanjaroDRCS::ABEYAInes ABEYA @GEO - BACK FOR A WHILETue Apr 18 1989 13:1835
The last time I climbed Kilimanjaro, it was in Tanzania...
So, there are 2 possibilities: either from time to time it
moves to the other side of the border... or the border
goes accross it (pretty close to the top) and therefore
you can access it from either side !

    Re: the original question:

The sight of a man equipped with sandals wouldn't surprise
me too much in that area (you can actually climb pretty
close to the top without encountering snow, and there are
no technical difficulties - you walk on a path all the time
    - no real climbing, but a few steep places at the top.

What surprised me more (but not to the point to ask here)
was what we saw coming (or rather running) down:

as we were already pretty low, in the forest area, we
crossed a group of people on their way up, dressed up
as if they were going for a concert at the Scala of Milano
(i.e. evening dresses for the ladies and smokings for the
men !!), and in the group was a guy wearing a smoking,
carried by 4 natives on one of those chairs that were
used in the ol' days they had no cars !!!

We never new what they were doing there (and how far they
would get like that) - maybe a movie team or a bet ?
As we were running down , for some reason we didn't stop to
find out - somehow we couldn't believe our eyes either !
Some of us thought they had dreamt the scene - but a
collective dream is that possible ??

    Reply to .11, Abeya,

    That's not suprizing either.

Pikes Peak is 14,110 feet high. When Zebulon Pike saw it he said no man
would climb the peak which reaches up 8,000 feet from Colorado Springs.

Not 100 years later there were paths up the mountain and later a dirt
road. Today we have a narrow guage rail train and an almost paved road
    to the top.

Last time I hiked Barr trail I was PASSED by a man and woman of middle
age walking in non-trail shoes. He was in tennis and she was in leather
lofers. They went to the top, some 13 miles up, carrying plastic bags
    of food.

I talked to them for a minite or so. They were going to hitch down.

You see the strangest things when you don't got your camera...

The American Heritage Dictionary -- not the last word on anything, but
a statement of the conventional orthodox answer to questions -- says
that Kilimanjaro "is in NE Tanzania near the border with Kenya."

In the notes about things that "go bump in the night", we can find
