Here's an interesting coincidence that happened last night...perhaps someone could figure the odds against it happening. My friend and I play two-handed pinochle. In this game, all cards below the nine are cast out of the deck, and there are two of each suit/card. Aces score 11 points, tens 10, kings 4, queens 3, jack 2, and 0 for nines. There are 250 possible points per hand (10 points are awarded for taking the last trick). Here's the fun part: FIRST HAND Me: 82 Her: 168 SECOND HAND Me: 82 Her: 168 THIRD HAND Me: 82 Her: 168 FOURTH HAND Me:105 Her: 145 What are the odds of us getting identical scores three hands in a row? The final score was: Me: 0791 Her: 1079 Her running totals were: 368 (=17=8), 566 (=17=8), 764 (=17=8), and 1079 (=17=8) Neat, eh? Perry

If you play enough games, some odd coincidences occur. We played Pinochleevery week for months with a few other couple in an old farmhouse. One night we had 5 people & took turns sitting out games, getting the coffee, etc. During one of these hands the bidding was intense and competitive, I walked around and looked at all the hands. Every hand had all one color except for one off-color card. Every hand was one card short of a run. Every card each player needed was in another hand, not their partners' hand either. The kitty had all nines. Partners were bidding against each other, and all the hands were worthless. The people who took the bid were set back.....MWR |
