985.0. "Problems with focussing..." by COMICS::SHARMA () Fri Feb 10 1989 07:03

I have been having problems with my mental screen for some time.
It appears my buffers are not functioning properly although my
thinking, logic and memory are working extremely well. I can be
reading something and comprehend each word individually but my
memory gets erased as soon as I have read the next word. Spoken
    word presents no problems.

When I sit down to meditate, I don't get a clear image at all,
that I used to get when my mental buffers were working ok. Instead,
what I get these days is either a fuzzy picture or complete chaos.
I seem to get a very spongy feeling on my mental plane.

This feels very funny and frustrating because I get strong feeling
and awareness that this screen is there but is covered by this
heavy, mucky, messy... screen that is acting like a barrier to
what I need to get at. This is now beginning to affect my
concentration and focussing powers to such an extent that my
    comprehension is suffering.

It feels as if I have got a blocked energy channel or a week energy
centre. Can someone suggest some sort of exercise to clear this
blockage. All input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

    Peace and Love,
    perwesh

I know exactly what you are talking about. Sort of like going around
in a fog, or that icky feeling you get on your teeth after not brushing
    for a few days.

A few times I have connected this feeling with diet problems, not
eating right all the time and not having a balanced diet. Cut down
on all non prescription drugs and remember to eat. Then If all
these things are ok with you I find the following very helpful.

While your finishing your shower.....reach over and turn off the
hot water. The resulting flow of emotional energy and loud noise
should snap you out of it. I know it works for me!

I am actually being serious about the cold water and diet. I think
many times things for me would be so predictably chaotic and I
would fuzz out. I need something wacky and silly to keep me alert
    and awake. (Self induced E.C.T.)

I have also found that this fuzzyness was at times the onset of
a minor form of depression. A time where I would close down the
connections between the world and myself in an attempt to deal
with an inner pain ect. The shower helped with this also... and
helps put things for me a bit more into reality.

(If the cold shower is a bit extreem just SLOWLY turn off the hot
till it gets as cold as you can stand it and stand under the
    water for a few seconds.)

    Take care,

    Hi Perwesh,

Here's another perspective that might be useful to you. First,
are you familiar with astrology and, if so, with your birthchart?
Very often experiences like you are having can also be reflected
in your birthchart by tracking planetary transits, particularly
by the outer or transpersonal planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto).
I would suggest you seek out a reliable astrologer and have your
transits looked at. If you are in the process of an outer planet
transit, or perhaps even other cyclical aspects, my suggestion
would be not to try to get rid of it, but to *get into* it and
see what it is trying to say to you.

Take an inventory of your different energy uses. They should be
balanced between intellectual, emotional and physical (include
spiritual if it works for you).

Each person has their own balance points.

When I am too focused on one aspect of my energy I get flat in that
part of my life. I usually redirect some of my energy to some of the
other areas and the problem goes away.

Visualize yourself at peace and in balance with all energy, take
control of your focus, and it *will* happen.

I also think diet could be the key...sugar will put you into that
sticky fog, as will animal flesh.

Thought my diet was fairly normal, although, I do feel tired
most of the time. I have always been a very light sleeper. My normal
pattern is; in bed just after midnight, wake up at @03:00 and after
this few minutes of sleep interrupted by longer periods of lying
awake. I accepted this as norm until a couple of years ago.

I think I will try the cold shower treatment.

Don't know about a good astrologer. Any suggestions for the
    South of UK???

    .3
It's possible the energies are out of balance. I had thought
    of it.

    .4
Cunsumption of sugar is normal, I think. I have been cutting
    down on animal flesh.

    ----------

One other piece of info which may be relevant is my head. I normally
feel pressure on the head as if the the ball of energy was sitting
on it and the area underneath the ball, extending few inches inside
    the skull is hot.

thanks for all your replies, so far.

It doesn't sound good at all, when you heat up during the meditation.
May I ask you 1) what type of meditation technique you follow?
                  2) for how many years you have being practicing?
    	          3) exactly what position of the body heat up?

Normally, you should not see illusion or hear voice out of no where
during your meditation. If you do, you are forcing the energy from
right side (Pingala nadi) too much or forcing the left side (Ida nadi).

I have found if I do some activity which has no apparent
purpose, it breaks the stranglehold my mind has on my being.
Try digging a small whole with the wrong end of the shovel.

Your sleep pattern isn't that abnormal. I myself have found
that I operate best on 3 to 5 hours of sleep during the day.
I CAN sleep more, but my body is most comfortable with this
amount. If I get any more than that I get grumpy and any less
causes me to be constantly tired.

The most important thing about sleep amounts is that you
feel rested after your sleep, not the amount you get.

You are describing what might be a migraine headache - a common
migraine (as opposed to the more famous kind called 'classic'). All
of the symptoms are there - inability to concentrate, pressure,
    unusual sleep patterns.

Are you under any kind of stress? That is usually my main trigger.

I find that exercise sometimes helps this condition. If you would
like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me directly.

This activity sounds like the "not doing" type of stuff that Don
    Juan required of Carlos Castaneda.

The doing of something without regard to outcome, reward, or purpose.

985.11relax and enjoy itDNEAST::BERLINGER_MALIFE IN THE ASTRAL PLANETue Nov 14 1989 12:1512
I agree with .10 but would phrase it as relax and enjoy it. What
I mean by this is that when my visualising/meditations become hazy
or un-clear it, for me, means that I may have been too judgemental
recently and what I need to do is detatch from the process and let the
images go free without trying to control the vision.
Diet and sleep and energy chanels are also important to me
and these things work better when I just let them happen.
