    Yes, all these topics are and have been discussed here and my sense
    is that you would also be able to make a valuable contribution to
    the notesfile GENRAL::NATIVE_AMERICANS.  The latest topics
    in this notesfile (Native) discussed Spirituality and the Native
    American, yet somehow did not get too far off the ground.
    
    Yes, there a a lot of folks out there who have a deep and burning
    desire to share their lore.

    Your input is appreciated, however, it may not be a wise thing to
    enter this in GENRAL::NATIVE_AMERICANS.  There are some groups that
    actively oppose the teaching of "Native American Spirituality" to
    Non-Natives.  This really doesn't make a lot sense to me and it
    really doesn't matter what these groups believe but I do know that
    a real danger exists.  So thanks anyways but I'll pass on your sug-
    gestion for now.

I am *very* interested in "The medicine path". Could you supply me with some
more information about that? Titles of books, or anything? The reason why I ask
is because I have found some vague references in homeopathic books I am
reading, and it seems to be the same as you mention. 

And oh, if some persons object to teaching it to non-natives, how about people
who actually *live* in Europe? ;-)

    Some basic information "would be nice", yes?
    
    I am a member of the DEER TRIBE or the METIS (Mixed Blood) MEDICINE
    SOCIETY.  I have apprenticed to "THE PATH" and have chosen to carry
    a pipe.  My medicine name is Deer-Elk.
    
    The basic precepts of this particular path are:
    
      o  Honor the Two Sacred Laws - Everything is born of the feminine
         and nothing shall be done to harm the children, including the
         child within ourselves.

      o  Honor the Cosmic & Natural Laws - Energy Laws.

      o  Seek Knowledge and Pleasure.
    
      o  Heal the wounded, needy, abandonded child within ourselves.
    
      o  Take responsibilty for ourselves, take our power, and awaken
         to our Sacred Dream.
    
      o  Heal Grandmother Earth and live in harmony and balance.
    
      o  "Give away" our self importance and our attachments.
    
      o  "Give away" our guilt, blame and shame.
    
      o  Walk our paths impeccably (doing the best we can) and "Walking
         our Talk".


    A piece of cake!!  We "know" all of this shit already, right?
    Well, what I'm learning (I am a neophyte) is that the knowledge
    I've had in my mind is useless without proper will and intent. 
    I just had a thought (amazing!), maybe will comes from the 4th
    Chakra and intent from the 3rd.
    
    The ceremonies and the alchemy help to create the energy that is
    for our highest and greatest good.  All of the healings and most
    of the gatherings are conducted in ceremony.
    
    I read some previous notes that discussed Carlos Constaneda's use
    of mind altering drugs.  Interesting judgements were made both
    condoning and condemning it's use.  For what it's worth, the teacher
    plants are in the center of the Plant World of Grandmother Earth.
    They are the catalyst for that world.  The Plant World is in the
    West and the plants are the Givers.  They give us oxygen, food,
    raw materials for building and clothing, etc.  They can also teach
    us how to give.  The "drugs" are used in certain ceremonies for
    specific purposes but not like we did in the 60's.  To abuse these
    plants would drain one's power.  I think Don Jaun makes a similar
    statement in one of Carlos' books.  (I wonder if he got that from
    me? ... just kidding!)
    
    I'm getting a bit long winded so let me stop here after I answer
    Arie's questions.  You might try Carlos Constaneda, Lynn Andrews,
    Sun Bear's (I think) Earth Astrology, or Heymeost (sp?) Storm's
    Seven Arrows.
    
    Yes, there are several lodges in Europe.  At the Sundance last year
    I met some of the people from Sweden, Germany & England.  The people
    from Sweden were really exciting.

Hello again everyone!

I'm really happy that there is so much interest.  Why?  To be honest
it's my ego and self-importance.  I feel that I'm playing a significant
role in the design of the GREAT SPIRIT (God, Universal Consciousness or
whatever) by helping others find their "Path With Heart".  There are
probably many brothers and sisters in this conference who have found
their Path.  Some are still searching and others will always be search-
ing for the "right" path.  To those who are earnestly seeking their
path, I'm not trying to say that the way of the Rainbow Warrior is the
right or only path.  But if it calls to you let me know.  We (as in all
people) need 144,000 enlightened beings to raise the consciousness of
this Planet of the Children and to restore the balance and harmony in
our world.  This is the Planetary Dream as opposed to my Sacred Dream
and my Personal Dream.

I forgot one (maybe more) item on my list in .5 and that is:

	o  Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort

I received several mail messages and would like to answer one of the
questions here in this note.

Q:  Are you offering information, like this is where you can find this,
    or would you think of yourself as a teacher?

A:  I consider myself a teacher, only to the extent that we are all
    teachers for each other.  So the answer is yes and no.  Where can
    you find this information?

    At first I thought I would just post the address and phone number
    of the Deer Tribe here in this note but I have decided not to do
    that at this time.  If you are serious I can send you more infor-
    mation via U.S. Mail or E-Mail.  If there is enough interest in a
    particular area that does not have a lodge, it is possible to set
    up a seminar.

The questions in .9 (I love you Karen!) are the same questions that I
had with the additional "what happened to wisdom and compassion?".  I
think my Buddhist background was showing through.

In any case, my perception of knowledge and pleasure.  Knowledge is
the result of knowing intimately.  Knowing that goes beyond the intel-
lectual level.  Pleasure is that which brings joy and beauty into our
lives.  I don't mean the short term pleasure with the long term pain.
Pleasure is erasing the pain tapes and "giving away" the guilt, blame
and shame that we have stockpiled in our bodies and minds.

Does this answer your question and does it fit nicely into your real-
ity?  If not, that's fine.

Getting long winded again so I'll sign off for now.  I do need to get
to work to actualize my Personal Dream.  Send me mail if you'd like
and I'll gladly try to answer your questions "off-line".

I forgot in my previous note, there are also lodges in Switzerland
and Austria.  And yes, I do not live in the N.E.  I'm in Arizona.  I
get the feeling that most of the readers in this conference are wear-
ing lots warm clothing this time of year.

    Hello Yoshii,
    
    	I have read the first five books written by Carlos Castaneda and
    own all but the latest (it *just* came out in paperback).  A Separate
    Reality was my favorite (so far).  Don Juan's teachings were a catalyst
    to alot of good changes in my life.  Specifically, the concept that
    reality as we know it is only perception and that life as we know it
    has little value, death is always at our left regardless of who you are
    and that our troubles as they affect us are a result of our indulging
    in them.
    
    	The biggest question in my life at this point is "Does this path
    have a heart?" and the most comfort that I have is that "a path is just
    a path...to leave a path is no affront to yourself or to anyone
    else...(and I can) try as many paths (as I like)"  Choosing the *right*
    path is not important since there isn't a *right* path, what is
    important is that the path have a heart.
    
    	Interesting reading, Yoshii.  BTW, is the lodge in any way
    affiliated with the White Eagle Lodge in the UK?

HO! Kathy,

Yes, I do agree and that is why I placed the quotation around RIGHT.  It
has been my experience that I have lacked the commitment to my path.  I
was (and still am for that matter) also lacking in self dicipline.  I am
not trying to make a judgement as to what is right or how many is right.
I am convinced that a commitment must be made to follow one's Path With
Heart and that it is often times very easy to get distracted by others
that seem to require less time/effort or those that bring us more mater-
ial comfort or those that we are expected to follow by peers and family.

I have lived with this conflict between my Shiedeh (lower self) and Hok-
Shiedeh (higher self) for many years.  I've made some major changes in
my life and have committed myself to seek knowledge and pleasure.  This
commitment was made in ceremony from my heart across a Talking Stick.
This might give you a better idea of where I'm at.

I'm not sure of the Lodge in the UK.  Do they study with Swift Deer?

I wasn't aware of this until I read some notes in NATIVE but it seems
that Sun Bear has a lodge in the NE.  There is also a phone number for
a contact in note 55.10.  Some of the readers here might be interested.
Previously, I thought Sun Bear was in Washington (state).

It is my understanding that Sun Bear's teachings are more traditional
Native American.  Some of Swift Deer's apprentices have studied with Sun
Bear and some of Sun Bear's have probably studied with Swift Deer.  Not
really that important but I'd like to share with with the readers here
what I know about the Deer Tribe (Twisted Hairs).  I'll do this in my
next reply.  If anyone can add to this please do.

AHO Yoshii,

Sun Bear has a strong network of apprenctices in the NE area. The Bear
Tribe Headquarters is in Spokane. The New England headquarters is located
in Lunenburg, MA.

The NE network is working toward a land base here in NE. We are searching
for a suitable place for the Tribe to hold screenings, and where Vision
Quests can be conducted. Currently, all Vision Quests offered by the Tribe
and most apprentice screenings are held in WA.

By the little I've read here so far, Sun Bear's teachings seem similar to
the Deer Tribe's (or vice-versa). I would tend to agree, that some of Sun
Bear's apprentices have studied with Swift Deer. Some have had a variety
of teachers, and are committed to both their own path and Sun Bear's
vision.

I am not an apprentice. I work with the tribe in a variety of functions.
One of them is to type and produce a newsletter. We swap newsletters as a
way of connecting with other circles around the country. If you are
interested, let me know and I'll pass it on to Betsy.

I want to make this my final entry in this notes file.  I hope you've
enjoyed reading so far.  The following should give you an idea of how the
Deer Tribe's teachings differs from the Traditional Native American.


                     HISTORY OF THE TWISTED HAIRS

The teachings of the Deer Tribe Metis Medicine Society comes from a "Body"
of Sacred Knowledge of the Traditional Native American Elders called the
"TWISTED HAIRS".  These Twisted Hairs were all "WARRIORS" and came from
many different tribes from all of North, South and Central America which
was called Turtle Island.  A Twisted Hair Warrior was also, usually, an 
Elder and respected Medicine Man/Woman, Shaman, Sorcerer or Magician and
was a member of his/her particular tribe's "secret" Medicine Society or
Magickal Lodge.  What separated a Twisted Hair form a traditional Medicine
Person was his/her "ability" and "desire" to seek knowledge from ALL
sources.  These men and women chose to travel and seek knowledge from every
direction of the Wheel of Life in order to find their Center and come into
perfect alignment with the Great Spirit.

In the Native American language, the hair symbolized knowledge and, there-
fore, a "Twisted Hair" was one who WOVE knowledge from all sources into 
his/her Path With Heart and made it his/her knowledge.  The Twisted Hairs
learned to use every available resource around them in accordance with the
Sacred Laws.  In this way, they becam "Rainbow Warriors" and began to meet
with each other, sit in council and exchange openly their various sources
of knowledge.

At a historical meeting in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1224, they met and banded to-
gether into a very secret Medicine Society and named themselves the Twisted
Hairs Medicine Society of the Sweet Medicine Sun Dance.  Their "Council of
Elders" came to a unanimous agreement for membership and established a 
Circle of Law to help facilitate the sharing of their combined knowledge
with anyone whose primary reason for choosing a physical body was for the
purpose of seeking Knowledge and Pleasure in order to eventually become
Enlightened and to Learn to become a "Human Being" who touches himself/her-
self, life and others with Beauty.

Before closing I'd also like to leave you with several passages from the
book "Seven Arrows" by Hyemeyohsts Storm (spelled it right this time).  To
me (as in, "for myself") it is the essence of Spirituality.


                         THE SACRED MEDICINE WHEEL

"The Medicine Wheel is the very way of life of the People.  It is an under-
standing of the Universe.  It is the way given to the Peace Chiefs, our
Teachers, and by them to us.  The Medicine Wheel is everything of the
People.  The Medicine Wheel is the Living Flame of the Lodges and the Great
Shield of Truth written in the sign of the water.  It is the Star-Fire and
the Painted Drum seen only in the eyes of the Children."

"The Medicine Wheel Way begins with the Touching of our Brothers and Sis-
ters.  Next it speaks to us of the Touching of the World around us, the
animals, trees, grasses and all other living things.  Finally, it teaches
us to Sing the Song of the World and in this way to become whole people."

"Come sit with me and let us smoke the Pipe of Peace in understanding.  Let
us Touch.  Let us, each to other, be a gift as is the Buffalo.  Let us be
meat to nourish each other that we may all grow.  Sit here with me, each of
you, as you are in your own perceiving of yourself, as a mouse, wolf,
coyote, weasel, fox, prairie bird or deer.  Let me see through your eyes.
Let us teach each other here in the Great Lodge of the People, this Sun
Dance, of each of the ways on this Great Medicine Wheel - OUR EARTH!"
