| If the paper bags are upside down, I would suspect they are
there to wrap some plants/shrubs to protect them from the
cold ??

| If it is the same as they do in my neighborhood, it is a
Christmas tradition. They fill those bags with sand and a
candle. The bags are placed about 8 to 10 feet apart along
the front border of each person's property. They are lit
on Christmas Eve and produce a beautiful effect.

I don't think so. They are all right side up. They also appear
to be too small to cover anything worthwhile. They are there
sporadically; they don't seem to consistently be there. Sometimes
I'll see them for several days- then I won't see them for a few
weeks. Then I'll see them again a few weeks later. They are also
out during the summer.
re .2
I suppose it's possible, but I don't think so. They are about 2
or 3 feet apart. The bags are not full to the top. They appear as
described in the previous paragraph. I have never seen them lit,
even though I have been by the properties at night.
I may be forced to stop and check out the contents of the bags
at night the next time I see them out.

Well, maybe these folks have come up with some ingenious way of
controlling some critters that have been messing up their lawn.
You never know..... ;-)

Hi Doctah, This is your old friend Anita. I happen to live in Westford
and have participated in that old "pagan" ritual for the past few
years. Hate to burst your bubble but its really a religious tradition
brought to Westford from the southwest. The bags contain sand and
vigil candles. They're put out at dusk on Christmas eve to 'light
the way for the Christ child.' Since it began a few years ago,
the Boy scouts have taken over the sale of the 'kits' as a fund
raiser. If you driving through town on Christmas eve about 5:30
just shut off your headlights and leave your parking lights on.
Its really quite beautiful. Of course, you can't drive over 25 mph
or the wind will blow them out.
Hope this answer your query.

| What!!? No chicken bones? No feathers? No blood? I'm soooo
disappointed. :-)
Anita- why do these bags sometimes appear in August? Isn't that
a little bit ahead of schedule? I was really hoping to discover
some cult or something. :-)
BTW- Anita, et al, you can now "go home." SOAPBOX is back up on
PEAR::. Happy noting.

Wow - talk about an overdue answer to a question!
I used to live in Westford (Massachusetts, US) and also wondered
what the heck they were. The tradition didn't make its way to the
Nab section though, which is why I never participated. Don't recall
seeing them in August though.
Thanks Anita.
