| My drive time is often an occasion for some pretty heavy
introspection and philosophizing (is that a word) on my part.
Sometimes, my thought patterns are such that there is a lot of energy
attached to them, and this energy sometimes creates what seems to
be a charged atmosphere around me.
I've observed a correlation that when this energy is
at a very high level, my car has been "divebombed" by groups of small
birds, or by a single bird that seems to fly straight for my car.
So, maybe there is a correlation. Maybe not. Don't feel alone
in your observation.

| .4 Medicine Card (found in, ahem, another Notesfile ;-)
Dragonfly .... Illusion
Dragonfly...
Breaks illusions,
Brings visions of power,
No need to prove it,
Now is the hour!
Know it, believe it,
Great Spirit intercedes,
Feeding you, blessing you,
Filling all your needs.
Dragonfly medicine is of the dreamtime and the illusionary facade we accept as
physical reality. The iridescence of Dragonfly's wings reminds us of colors
not found in our everyday experience. Dragonfly's shifting of color, energy,
form, and movement explodes into the mind of the observer, bringing vague
memories of a time or place where magic reigned.
...
Dragonfly is the essence of trhe winds of change, the messages of wisdom and
enlightment, and the communications from the elemental world. This elemental
world is made up of the tiny spirits of plants, and of the elements of air,
earth, fire, and water. In essence, this world is full of nature spirits.
If Dragonfly has flown into your cards today, you may have forgotten to water
your plants. On another level, you may need to give thanks to the foods you
eat for sustaining your body. On the psychological level, it may be time to
break down the illusions you have held that restrict your actions or ideas.
Dragonfly medicine always beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits
which you need to change. Have you put on too much weight, or have you
started to look like a scarecrow? Have you tended to the changes you wanted
to make in your life? If you feel the need for change, call Dragonfly to
guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.
See how you can apply the art of illusion to your present question or
situation, and remember that things are never completely as they seem.

910.18 | Tiger, tiger burning bright | WMOIS::CONNELL | Story does that to us. | Mon Sep 25 1995 17:34 | 88 |
| This is from Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews. The book lists many rituals,
chants, dances, and information about lots of different animals, birds,
and insects. Here's what it has to say about tigers.
Tigers represent passion, power, devotion, and sensuality. Their cycle
of power is nocturnal. Particularly around the new and full moons.
Tigers are magnificent and stir a feeling of awe in all who see them.
There are a number of varieties of tigers--bengal, Siberian, etc.--and
each should be examined for it's own characteristics. Information on
cats and panthers should also be studied as often there is an overlap.
All tigers are known for their ferocity and their power. They are also
excellent swimmers, unlike other large cats. this gives them ties to
all the energies and mystical qualities so often asociated with the
element of water. All tigers display great motherly devotion with their
offspring. The mother raises the young and teaches them to hunt. Most
tigers are solitary, and they come together usually only to mate. They
also have immense territories.
The Siberian tiger is considered by many to be the most magnificent,
and most experts agree that this species of tiger originated in the
Northern part of East Asia. It would later migrate and evolve to live
in warmer areas. The Siberian tiger is an untiring traveler. It can
cover great distances in a single day. Tigers pray upon all types of
animals, but Wild Boar is a frequent victim.
The Bengal tiger lives in Southern Asia. It's main prey is deer. It
will usually live in several lairs, one of which is used to bring up
the young cubs. At 8 weeks old the cubs join their mother in hunting.
At 6 months, they have learned to kill, but are not capable of feeding
themselves until they are around 16 months old.
Most tigers hunt slowly and silently, a tactic beneficial to learn for
those with this totem--regardless what is being sought. They can be
selfish with their kills, and they can drag a several hundred pound
carcass over a quarter mile, just to hide it.
Tigers are nocturnal hunters. Individuals with this totem will find
their most effective work accomplished at night. The traditional black
and gold/orange patterning links the tiger to the mysticism surrounding
the new and full moons.
The sleek and powerful muscles and the soft thick coat of the tiger
stimulates thoughts of sensuality. All cats stretch langurously and rub
up against other cats and objects. (I've watched tigers do this and
purr while doing so. quite a sight. PJ) For those with this totem,
there will be awakened a new sensuality--a sensitivity to touch.
There has always been a great deal of mysticism and mythology centered
on the tiger. A study of these associations will help you to identify
its role within your own life and possibly even past-life links to
other parts of the world.
In Korea, the tiger is the king of beasts. In the Hindu tradition, the
tiger was sacred to the goddess Kali, the goddess of creation and
dissolution, of sexuality and death. In Greece, the tiger was
associated with the mythic character, Dionysus, the twice-born.
China is filled with myth and legend of the tiger. In Chinese
astrology, one of the 12 signs is the sign of the tiger. Those born in
the year of the tiger are assigned the traits of being both colorful
and unpredictable. they are adventurous, powerful, and passionate.
In China, the tiger is a symbol of darkness and the new moon, as well
as brightness and the full moon. there are 5 mythic tigers in Chinese
lore. The red tiger is a symbol of the south, summer, and fire. The
black tiger is a symbol of the north, winter, and water. The blue tiger
is a symbol of the east, spring, and vegetation. The white tiger is a
symbol of the west, autumn, and all metals. THe yellow tiger is supreme
among all 5. It is the ruler of the Earth and all energies upon it.
If a tiger has entered your life, you can expect new adventures. It
will awaken new passion and power within life. Expect it to begin
within 6-8 weeks and last for at least a year and a half. Examine what
is going on in your life. Do you need more passion for life? Are you
expressing your life passion inappropriately? Has your energy been
down? If a tiger has shown up, there will begin to manifest new
adventures and renewed devotion and passion for life.
Gotta run. Tomorrow I'll work on entering the dragonfly entry. It's
even longer. :-)
Bright Blessings,
PJ

| Ok, here goes with Dragonflies. This is also from Animal-speak by Ted
Andrews. It's one of those Llewellyn Publication books that Cindy gave
the address for in another string.
Dragonflies and Damselflies represent the Power of Light. They are very
ancient with estimates of having been around for over 180 million
years. They have a beautiful, jewel-like coloring. The bright colors
take time to develop, reflecting that with maturity our own true colors
come forth. This is part of dragonfly medicine.
For many it is difficult to tell the difference between a dragonfly and
a damselfly. Dragonfles have broad bodies and enormous eyes.
Damselflies are more slend and delicate. When dragonflies are at rest,
they hold their wings out like a glider. Damselflies will fold their
wings over their backs when at rest. Dragonflies will often eat while
in flight, and damselflies will always land before eating.
Both are known for their fast flight and their dazzling aerial feats,
as if imitating how light itself can be moved and directed. They twist,
turn, change direction in an instant, hover, move up or down, and even
fly backwards. Dragonflies ae sometimes known as mosquito hawks. Both
the damsels and the dragons are excellent hunters of flying insects.
they can fly at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and their eyes help
spot flying insects. They can spot a movement 40 feet away. They use
their sharp, spiny legs and strong jaws to capture their prey.
Dragonflies and damselflies inhabit 2 realms--water and air. The
significance of these should be examined. In their early life--as a
nymph--they live within the water. As they mature and go through their
metamorphosis, they move to the realm of air. It is not unusal to find
people with dragonfly totems to be very emotional and passionate in
their early years, but as they get older, they learn to balance it with
greater mental clarity and control. Sometimes it can indicate that the
emotions have gotten shut down because of emotional issues in the early
life. Remember that the dragonfly and damselfly are found around water.
There must be expressions of the emotional and the mental together.
If a dragonfly has shown up in your life, you may need some fresh air
in regard to something emotional. You may need to gain a new
perspective or make a change. It may even indicate that you are
neglecting your emotions. Are you being to rational about everything?
Are you not keeping the color of emotions alive?
Dragonflies are very territorial. They will lay their eggs within their
territory near the water. The egg eventual develops into the nymph
stage of metamorphosis in this insect, and remains a nymph for almost 2
years before it transforms into an adult dragonfly or damselfly. This
can reflect a number of possibilities for those with this totem. It may
indicate that an approximate 2 year period of change may be starting or
reaching it's culmination. It may reflect a need for you to institute
changes that culminate in a colorful transformation that you desire
within a 2 year period. Only by examining your life and activities will
you begin to understand it's specific role.
Just as light can bend and shift in a variety of ways, so can the
archetypal forces associated with the dragonfly. It is one of the most
adaptable of insects. That's why it's been able to survive for so long.
Dragonflies have 2 pairs of wings, but if need be, they can fly with 1.
Their eyes are kept clean with special combs of their legs and by
washing their eyes with drops of water collected in the mouth.
Their main enemies are frogs and birds. Particularly the frog should be
studied by those with this totem.
Their realm is the realm of light, and they are only out during the
day, as they are cold-blooded. Summer is their most powerful time, as
they need the warmth and light of the sun. For those with this totem,
this will be important to consider. Spending time outside in the sun
near fresh water sources will be beneficial for restoring and changing
health conditiopns for the better for those with this totem.
Although some hace color pigments in their skin, for most the colors
are caused almost the same way rainbows form. Structures in their shell
scatter and refract the light, making them look iridescent green and
blue. As they age, they may pass through several color changes. This
ability to reflect and refract light and color has caused it to be
associated with many forms of magic and mysticism--including color
magic, illusion, (causing others to only see what you wish) and more.
Draghonfly's magic is the power of light and all that has ever been
associated with it.
Dragonflies and damselflies are often depicted in Japanese paintings,
representing new light and joy. To some Native Americans, they
represent the souls of the dead. Some stories speak of the time when
they used to be real dragons. Often we assume that dragons have to be
gigantic beasts breathing fire, but the fantastic creatures of the
Faerie Realm often come in many shapes and sizes. Dragonflies because
they are mythical relatives of ancient dragons are wonderful links to
nature spirits.
The dragonfly and damselfly reflect work with the sun and light. The
light changes throughout the day. The dragonfly and damselfly undergo
their own transformations. If they have shown up, look for change to
occur. Are you resisting change when you shouldn't? Dragonflies remind
us that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we
choose to do so. "Let there be light" is the divine prompting to use
the creative imagination as a force within your life. This is part of
what dragonflies and damselflies teach us.
Life is never quite the way it appears, but it is always filled with
light and color. Dragonfly can help you see through your own illusions
and thus allow your own light to shine forth. Dragonfly brings the
brightness of transformation and the wonder of colorful new vision.
That's it for dragonfly. Hope the preceding two replies helped out,
Cindy and others.
Bright Blessings,
PJ

Stella,
What animal(s) "call" to you the strongest? Is there a certain
animal that appears when you need guidance? Sometimes your totem is
right there all the time, we just don't notice it.
For me it seems that whenever I ask about something the sign is a
feather and I feel a very strong kinship to birds.
I have had the opportunity as part of a group to retrieve power
animals for each other, which was a new experience for me and quite
wonderful. I retrieved a fox for my partner and she found a chipmunk
for me. For all the people in the group, none of us knew anything
about our partners until we met that week and all the power animals
retrieved had special meaning for the retrieve-e's.

910.26 | A horse is a horse, of course | WMOIS::CONNELL | Story does that to us. | Wed Sep 27 1995 18:33 | 77 |
| MaryAnne, the chipmunk is not listed. There is a section on squirrels,
but I'm not sure if that would apply. I will list horses. If only let
Stella know just what she's getting into. :-)
Stella, the Arabian isn't listed, but the horse in general is listed.
Here goes.
The horse represents Travel, power, and freedom. The cycle of power is
year round.
The horse is rich in lore and mythology. An entire book could be
written on the significance of the horse alone, for no one single
animal has contributed to the spread of civilization than the horse.
It has been associated with both burial rites and birth--with
individuals riding into and out of the world upon it. The Norse god
Odin rode upon and 8-legged steed known as Sleipner. In the Hindu and
Greek tradition the chariots of the Sun gods (Surya and Apollo
respectively) are pulled by stallions.
In Chinese astrology the horse is associated with appeal and
persuasiveness. Horses are symbols of freedom--oftentimes without the
proper restraints. Horse people in Chinese astrology are friendly and
adventurous, and they can be very emotional.
Before the horse's domestication the distances between peoples and
societies was great, and there was little interaction. It served
humanity in travel, war, agriculture, and in most other major areas of
life. Today the horse is limited mostly to recreation and agriculture,
but it's wnergy is expansive. Because of it, the world has been brought
closer together.
The horse enabled people to explore and find freedom from the
constraints of their own community. This enabled them to travel and
discover the multiplicity of life and all it's powers. Horses have
great appeal to most people. We are fascinated by them, and riding one
raises us above the mundane, and renews our sense of power. riding
horses has been likened to flying by more than one poet through the
ages. They signify the wind and even the foam of the sea.
Horses were given the power of divination. More than one legend speaks
of the clairvoyance of horses and their ability to recognize those
involved in magic. They are symbols that can express the magical side
in humans.
The symbolism of the horse is complex. It can express movement and
travel, or maybe it showed up to help you with movement. It has been a
symbol of desires--especially sexual. The stallion was often used as a
symbol of sexuality. The taming of a stallion would then be the taming
of sexuality and dangerous emotions.
As with many domesticated animals, there are a wide variety of
horses--each with it's own unique abilities. Riding, plowing,
pulling--the horse still serves a variety of functions. To understand
your own particular horse totem, try to determine what kind it is,
Horses, like dogs are bred today for specific purposes and determing
that can help you define the purpose of it within your own life.
Take your totem and examine it in regard to yourself. What is it's
color? It's kind? How does it appear to you? Does it run? Is it
perceived standing? Do you see yourself riding it or watching it?
If a horse has shown up in your life, it may be time to examine aspects
of travel and freedom within your life. Are you feeling constricted? Do
you need to move on or allow others to move on? Is it time to assert
your freedom and your power in new areas? Are you doing your part to
assist civilization within your own environment? Are others? Are you
honoring what this civilization has given you?
Horse brings with it new journeys. It will teach you how to ride in new
directions to awasken ans discover your own freedom and power.
That's the horse folks.
Bright Blessings,
PJ

910.32 | Look Boris. Is squirrel without moose | WMOIS::CONNELL | Story does that to us. | Fri Oct 13 1995 18:07 | 76 |
| OK, it's been awhile since I promised the squirrel posting, but I've
been taking time off and just kicking back and having lots of fun and
mystical, magical experiences, including one involving a mouse. Anyway
here goes squirrell. (Maybe I should do moose at the same time? Also,
timetraveling dogs that own boys? NAAAAHH :-) )
This, again is from Ted Andrews' book Animal-Speak.
The squirrel is about activity and preparedness. It has a year-round
power cycle. Everyone is familiar with the squirrel. It's a member of
the rodent family, and is often seen scurrying about, as if always busy
or bursting with nervous energy. Squirrels can be quite sociable, but
they don't like strange squirrels. They are often observed scrounging
for food, digging holes in the earth and storing nuts and other food
for latert times. Their keen sense of smell will enable them to find
their stored caches, even if they forget where they are buried.
Their are two main types of squirrels, the gray and the red. There is
also a black squirrel, which is a more aggessive strain of the gray.
The gray is found most often, in the city, while the red is more
commonly found in woods and forests.
There is also the flying squirrel, (see, I knew Rocky would come into
this :-) PJ) which does not really fly. It's skin stretches and enables
it to fly from tree to ground or to another tree. It's nocturnal and
strongly dislikes being disturbed during the day. It's cheif enemy is
the owl.
Red squirrels are the sentinels of the forest. They chatter and scold
when strangers appear. It seems as if they're reporting the news to all
who can hear. The red squirrel is more aggressive andusually a much
better fighter than the larger gray. The marten is the red's most
dangerous enemy and it should be studied as well. Reds usually have two
litters a year with two to seven young. Usually they're on their own
within twelve weeks of birth. This twelve-week cycle would be good to
examine in yourseld if a red has come to you.
The gray squirrel is the most common and the most enthusiastic. Like
all squirrels, it doesn't hibernate. It builds its nests in the hollows
of trees or in tree tops. The nest is usually ball shaped and has a
side entrance. Even though it's the bigger of the two (red and gray),
if confronted, a gray will usually run to avoid a fight. It's chief
enemies are raptors such as owls and hawks, and also foxes. Grays also
have 2 litters a year and follow the twelve week cycle.
All squirrels can be quite sociable. They like to wrestle and are
extremely observant and imitative. This is how they learn. Individuals
with squirrel totems learn best by doing rather than studying.
Squirrels are also quite communicative. Their chatter can often be
heard in the trees when disturbed or playing. Their bushy tail adds to
their expressiveness along with providing warmth, shade and balance.
They will often express emotions through flicks of their tails.
Every squirrel is unique and its medicine will be activated differently
for everyone. If a squirrel has scampered into your life, examine your
own activity and preparedness. Are you to active? Not active enough?
Are you not planning at all for the future, distant or near? Are you
becomming to erratic--running to and fro and not accomplishing
anything? Do you need to learn how to save and ration on any
level--including money, time and energy? Are you afraid that you'll
never have enough? Are you getting to hung up on collecting and
accumulating? Are you gathering and not giving?
Squirrels can teach us balance within the circle of gathering and
giving out. If we are doing to much of one or the other, squirrel may
appear to help us. Squirrels are the masters at preparing, but they are
also our reminders that in our quests for our goals, we should always
make time to socialize and play. work and play go hand-in-hand or the
work will create problems and become more difficult and less fruitful.
That's squirrel.
Bright Blessings,
PJ

At least according to a woman I struck up a conversation with at Barnes

astrology. (Required reading in Carole Frett's astrology that I'm
taking.) We talked for awhile and it lead into animal archetypes. (Her

it's very strong. (Odor included :-) ) So asking for skunk here is

| OK, here goes with the wolf.
The wolf represents guardianship, ritual, loyalty, and spirit. It's
power cycle is year round, but particularly strong during full moons
and at twilight.
Wolves are probably the most misunderstood of the wild mammals. Tales
of terror and their cold-bloodedness abound. Although many stories tell
otherwise, there has never been a confirmed attack and killing of a
human by a healthy wolf. In spite of the negative press, wolves are
almost the exact opposite of the way they are portrayed. They are
friendly, social, and highly intelligent. Their sense of family is
strong and loyal, and they live by carefully defined rules and rituals.
Wolves are the epitomy of the wild spirit. Their positive
characteristics are so numerous, it is no wonder that Native Americans
and others practically deified them. Many believe that the true test of
America's sincereity about protecting the environment will revolve
around whether or not the wolf remains protected and is allowed to be
reintrodueced into areas where it has heretofore been eliminated. The
wolf is the true spirit of the free and unspoiled wildnerness.
There are several kinds of wolves in North America. The red wolf is the
smallest and it may even be extinct in wild, although there are efforts
to reintroduce it. It's territory was in the Southern U.S. The Mexican
wolf is a subspecies of the more common gray wolf. It's found in the
Southwest U.S. and in Mexico. It was hunted almost to extinction and is
now part of a recovery and captive breeding program. The Arctic Wolf is
probably the purest breed. Living in an isolated area around the Arctic
Circle has enabled it to survive. The gray or timber wolf is the most
common. Only in Alaska, Canada, and the region around the Great Lakes
area is it found today. It was hunted to extinction in all other areas
of the country. The gray is not always gray. It may be black, gray,
brown, white, or combinations.
Probably the biggest misconception about wolves is their size. They are
not nearly as large as most people imagine. Their thick fur gives the
appearance of greater size, but they are usually no taller then a good
sized German Shepherd.
Wolves are very ritualistic--in as many ways as humans. They live by
carefully defined rules. There are specific territories that are
sacred. Their social behavior is based on a hierarchal structure. Each
member has a place and function within the pack. There is an "Alpha"
male and and "Alpha" female.
Wolves don't fight unnecessarily, and will go out of their way to avoid
it. Though they are extremely strong and powerful, disagreements rarely
end in serious fights. Often a glance, posture, or growl is all that's
needed to determine dominance. They don't have to demonstrate their
power, but are capable if it comes down to it. This is part of what
wolf medicine teaches. The wolf teaches you to know who you are and to
develop strength, confidence, and surety so that you don't have to
demonstrate it to all you meet.
Wolves have a complex communications system--using body language. Head
movement, an erect tail, direct eye contact--all have great meaning.
The postures are often subtle, but each wolf learns their meanings and
how to respond from the time they are pups. Facial expressions are also
varied and useful in conveying mood. It's a very important visual
center of communication alond wioth tail position, in effectively
communicating. Usually those with wolf totems are very expressive with
hands, posture, face, or in some other manner. If you have trouble
getting your ideas across, meditate and study the wolf. It'll teach you
how to empower your verbal communications with appropriate body
language.
Wolves also have a complex system of verbal communication. They howl,
whimper, whine, growl, and bark. Even their famous howls have a variety
of meanings. They may serve as a gathering call, a location call, a
social greeting or a territory defining cry. They even howl for the
sheer joy of it. (I've done this at the moon. It's really liberating:-)
Every member knows it's positon and relationship to others in the pack
and the pack as a whole. The ritualistic behaviors that define rank are
part of its magic. Wolf government is a combination of autocracy and
democracy. Both occur at times and it's this flexibility that adds to
the pack's success. Wolf can teach balance in government, between
authority and democracy. Wolf can teach you how to use ritual to
establish harmony and order in your life. Wolf helps us to understand
that true feedom requires discipline.
The "Alphas" of the pack willoften mate for life. Breeding season is
usually in late winter, with the female giving birth about two months
later, All the pack shows great care and affection towards the pups.
They're very tolerant. If a parent is unable to care for a pup, it'll
be adopted by another pack member. Some wolves even serve as
babysitters. Adults are friendly and amiable toward pups and wolf
medicine teaches respect and honor for family and children.
Wolves become sexually mature at 22-24 months, so look for the energies
from a wolf visit to take this same possible time pattern.
Wolves are, of course, predators. Their prey is mostly the sick,
young, or old. deer is the most common prey animal. Wolves will not
waste much time on a healthy adult moose that stands it's ground.
Wolves travel great distances in their hunting. They have a stamina and
strength that enables them to travel far and for extended periods.
They've been clocked at 24-28 MPH, but can't maintain that speed for
long. They do seem to be able to trot indefinitely at about 5 MPH. In
winter, wolves will use frozen lakes and rivers as routes and can
travel 15-20 kilometers in a single night.
Wolves will usually consume all that they capture, gorging themselves.
For those with a wolf totem, this can indicate a need to make use of
all that is available to you. Wolf shows up as a reminder to not waste
or to keep one's spirit alive.
The wolf is extremely intelligent and goes out of it's way to avoid
trouble or danger. Some believe that wolves even use ravens as aerial
spotters for possible food sorces. The raven has a connection with the
moose in Eskimo lore, and since moose can be a prey of wolves raven is
linked to them as well. Raens will often follow wolves. They fly ahead,
land in a tree, wait for the pack to pass, and then fly on again. raven
should also be studied by those with wolf totems.
Wolves have extremely keen sense of smell. It's said to be 100 times
that of humans. The sense of smell endows it with great discrimination,
and the sense of smell has often been associated with spiritual
idealism in metaphysical circles.
The wolf also has excellent hearing sensitivity. It's hunting depends
strongly on it's smell and hearing. This would be a reminder to those
with wold as totem to listen to their own inner thoughts and words. The
intuition will be strong. This idea is even further emphasized by the
thick fur coat. Fur and hair have long been symbols of psychic
abilities. The wolf has an inner and outer coat, giving it the ability
to reflect the archetypal forces associated with psychic insight.
The wold has a capacity for making quick and firm emotional
attachements. Wold teches you to learn to trust your own insight and to
secure your attachments accordingly. It can help you to learn the inner
and to guard you from inappropriate actions. Wolf will guard you as it
teaches--sometimes strongly, sometimes gently--but always with love.
When wolf shows up, it's time to breathe new life into your rituals.
Find a new path, take a new journey, take control of your life. You are
the governor of your life. You create it and direct it. Do so with
harmony and discipline and then you will know the true spirit of
freedom.
That's the wolf.

PJ

I am truly and deeply grateful for your work on my behalf PJ. I know
that we all appreciate the effort you are willing to put into this
research. It is obvious that you are very busy at present, and to find
time to enter these detailed descriptions is extremely kind and
generous. On behalf of myself and all of us grateful souls, I thank
you.
The wolf description is so amazing that it gave me shivers reading it.
As I mentioned before, the wolf has been an instinctive and VERY
powerful image for me for a few years. In that time I have begun to
truly trust my instincts, and a strong desire to teach and pass on my
knowledge has become foremost in my mind. My philosophy, as mentioned
in this conference before, is simple, and seems to closely match many
of the aspects of that description. I believe in balance, strongly, and
in finding the natural compromise between extremes, when most believe
there is no such compromise. Only those who know me well can now how
accurate that imagery is for me. To have it confirmed, however, by
someone who knows so little of me, gives me the inspiration to follow
my instincts where they lead me now, and those instincts are becoming
very strong, and my energy is building incredibly. One thing in my
future is now certain. I shall fight to return the wolves to their
rightful place on this earth, and to increase peoples awareness of
them, something I have only casually done before now.
Thanks again, and I look forward to meeting you soon,
Adam - aka Wolf to his friends :-)

| your welcome , Adam, or Wolf is it? :-) I'm glad it helps. However,
don't give me so much credit here. I don't have time to enter these
during thye day, it's true. Mostly because my job doesn't involve
sitting in front of the tube most of the day. Just on and off for data
entry and receiving material. Mostly a few minutes at a time. I do this
after work and it's a pleasure to bring information that seems to be
needed by so many.
I do hope that your coming over for the 10th anniversary at Cindy's.
The we all get to meet you. Plus you can get a look at the book, which
I'll bring along. It gives lots of information around rituals to
perform and a very interesting bit on shapeshifting to get in touch
with your totem. To long to put in right now.
Hey, if your totem is wolf and your name is Adam, which means Man are
you a manwolf or wolf man or .... a werewolf? Cindy, is the moon full
during the 10th party? Are we all safe or should I bring silver? :-)
Just kidding, friend.

| Just a touch, Stella? I got more than my share then. Anyway, on to
skunk.
The skunk is keynoted by sensuality, respect, and self-esteem. It has a
year-round cycle of power. The skunk is one of the most widely
recognized mammals, but also one of the most misunderstood. It's a very
powerful totem with mystical and magical associations. Just look at how
people respond to it. They show great respect for it and what it can
do. This is part of what skunk teaches. How to give, expect, and demand
respect. It helps you to recognize your own qualities and assert them.
The skunk doesn't get out of the way of any animal. It moves along at
its own pace, with its own mind. It's self assured and confident in
itself. If skunk has shown up, it can teach you how to be more
self-assured and how to assert yourself.
the natural enemy of the skunk is the great-horned owl. Skunk is its
favorite food. This owl should be studied as it's also part of the
balancing medicine of the skunk. Its essence can help you in seeing how
best to apply your skunk medicne.
Skunks are fearless, but they're also very peaceful. They move slowly
and calmly, and they only spray as a last resort. Because they're
peaceable by nature, they always give warnings before spraying. The
warnings come in 3 stages. 1st it'll stamp its feet and turn its back
to you. 2nd it'll raise its tail up, as the spray gland is located
under the tail. When the 3rd step arrives, it's usually to late. After
raising the tail, the skunk will look back over its shoulder. This is
to line up the spray angle. Once the skunk has seen you over its
shoulder, it's to late.
The skunk can spray 12-15 feet with tremendous accuracy and repeat the
spray 5 to 6 times before it has to build up again naturally. The spray
is an irritating chemical. It won't kill, but it can irritate the eyes
and numb the senses. Sometimes a skunk will show up to teach how to get
more attention without being arrogant or irritating. Sometimes it
teaches us how to deal with others who are outrageously irritating.
Tomato juice is still the 1 thing that helps to eliminate skunk odor.
Those with skunk as totem, may find that they have a sensitivity to
tomato products or need more within their diets. As with the great
horned owl, the tomato characteristics should also be studied as part
of the balancing medicine of skunk.
The skunk smell is one that everyone recognizes. This has links to how
skunk awakens in others a greater recognition of you and your own
abilities. The sense of smell also has ties to sensuality and
sexuality. reseach is currently being conducted that reveals the
various connections between fragrance and sexual response. This
includes work with pheromones and studies that reveal a surprising
similarity between the cells of and response of the olfactory nerves,
and those within the genitalia. (Hey jacqui, wasn't this discussed in
=wn= today :-) PJ)
Fragrance has long been used as an aphrodisiac. Those with skunk
medicne will find that the use of fragrances will elicit dynamic
responses in those they associate with. People will respond to
fragrances that you employ. A study of aromatherapy would be very
beneficial to those with this totem. When skunk shows up, you can
expect to experience stronger sexual responses to others and in their
response to you. A greater ability to attract people will begin to
unfold.
It's interesting how people respond to some fragrances. they complain
that certain smells drive them nuts. How often have you heard people
say, "I wish I knew what that smell was. It reminds me of something and
it's driving me crazy."
Skunks usually have one litter per year, with about 10 babies. Skunks
can spray from the moment their eyes open. (Note: This contradicts what
I've heard most about baby skunks. That they can't spray while young. I
have heard both however and tend to keep away from skunks. :-) PJ)
This again reflects the intense energy levels that those with this
totem are often born with. In the early years, they may find extreme
cycles of either repelling or being pushed away by others, or drawing
lots--many or no friends, never alone or always alone. At 20 weeks,
skunks are capable of being on their own. A skunk can have a 10 year
lifespan in the wild. This reflects the kinds of cycles likely to
manifest for those with this totem.
Skunks are known as carriers of rabies. Mothers will pass it on to the
young, although symptoms may not manifest for up to 6 weeks after
birth.
Individuals with skunk as totem must learn to balance attracting and
repeling people. This is a natural cycle. Skunk is solitary for the
most part. Skunk can remind us that there are times for drawing people
and times to avoid people. Finding the correct balance will ensure
prosperity.
There are 2 main types of skunk--spotted and striped. The striped is
the most common and most easily recognized. It actually has a double
stripe that runs from head to tail. This stripe, whether single or
double, is an indication of the active flow of the kundalini or life
force. The kundaline has ties to the sexual energies and to the
lifeforce that is active in every aspect of our life processes. In
individuals with this totem, the kundalini is usually already active.
Skunk shows up at a time to amplify and to teach control and use of
this life force more effectively.
In eastern metaphysics, students are taught of 3 channels of energy
that flow through the body along the spine--the ida, the pingala, and
the sushumna--the moon, the sun, and the balance of the 2. This
reflects the ability of those with skunk medicne to be able to turn on
and off the creative force and direct it along several lines. (Cindy,
you've studied eastern metaphysics and philosophy. Can you confirm the
above couple of paragraphs about kundalini and the 3 channels? PJ)
Skunks are usually silent, so it's good for those with this totem not
to blow their own horns. It'll backfire and only serve to push others
away. Sit back and let others do the noticing for you.
Skunks are very adaptable and this is what those with skunk totem must
also learn. Skunk can teach you when it's best to be noticed and how to
go about it most effectively. they are carnivorous, but they will eat
most anything, particularly insects, berries, and fruit. Skunk does its
hunting at night.
When skunk shows up as a totem, you are going to have oppurtunities to
bring out new respect and self-esteem. It indicates lessons and times
associated with increased sensuality physically, sexually, psychically,
and spiritually. Examine your self-image. Remember that people are
going to notice you. How they notice and remember can be controlled by
you. This is what skunk can help teach.
That's skunk, folks. As always, it's from Ted Andrews, Animal-speak. I
highly reccomend this book to others.

PJ

| Ok...can you put in for the Hawk.
I had this huge hawk fly right into the path of my car. It's wing span
was huge. It was feeding at the time and their was things hanging from
its beak. I came too close for comfort to hitting this magnificant
bird. The closest experience I've ever had to this is when I almost hit
a deer. I've also hit a skunk twice in my life. Are these things
significant??
How can you tell what shows up for you? Is it something you see or find
in your life at that time? Also how do you find out about your animal
totem. My son found his...I'd like to find out what mine is.
|
910.53 | | WMOIS::CONNELL | Story does that to us. | Wed Oct 18 1995 12:29 | 27 |
| I'll put the hawk in later this week. often an animal will show up a
number of times and reveal itself that way. Sometimes through
meditation or a visionquest will a totem come to you. Not all are
animals. I've been visited by hawks an eagles a few times. Once after
being hit in the head by a hammer. I thought I was hallucinating, as I
was the only one to see it. Then my granddaughter came out (she's
three) and she saw it also, with no prompting from me or others. So it
was a spirit bird. I've ridden down rt 2 and played NA music and had 4
hawks come down to car level and flank the car on both sides and follow
me until the tape was finished.
As far as hitting animals goes, I wouldn't put to much into it, unless
it happens with some frequency or regularity. Then they might be
telling you to pay attention to something that you may be neglecting in
your life. The above wasn't from the book. It's in the car today. Just
thoughts that popped into my brain while reading your reply.
Coming to the party? You can see the book there and read about your
totem. BTW, The book suggests that you sorta keep your totem to
yourself. It's personal between the animal spirit and you. Not to say
don't let anyone know and of course, asking in here (this string) is
fine. You gotta ask to find out the info. Just that it's very personal
for you.

for not posting the requested animals last week. I've at home laid up
with a pulled back. (An old injury. Louise Hay says that lower back is
money related. Guess so, I've never had any and have had the problem
since... Oh Blessed Goddess, I just realized. I've had the problem for
as long as I've had money issues, which is just after my marriage. Wow,
she's right) Anyway, I'm back and my back's back and I'll get to it
this week, unless I'm out again. Which I will be on Thursday and
Friday. :-)
Bright Blessings,
PJ

How right Louise Hay always is! I just got a new book on tape of
hers called "Life!..." and she never ceases to amaze me. She is
something else. I suggest you follow her "letting go and releasing"
affirmations for that lower back/money issue. I have her book, "You Can
Heal Your Life," and can print the affirmations here for you if you like
(although I would bet you have the book yourself...)
Take care.

910.68 | Hawk your wares while you can | WMOIS::CONNELL | Story does that to us. | Mon Oct 30 1995 18:57 | 133 |
| Yeah, Stella, she always seems to be right, once one thinks about it.
Now, so that we don't "Rathole" the animal topic, :-), here's the hawk
entry. Since Pat has has check out Panther (or Pantha, if you're from
New England, Like me :-) ) I go with Hawk right now.
Hawk is Visionary power and Guardianship. It's power cycles are the
Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes and the New Moon.
Hawks are one of the most intriguing and mystical of the birds of prey.
They are the protectors, the messengers, and the visionaries of the
air. Hawks, (along with owls) have the keenest eyes of all the raptors.
Hawks vary in size, appearance, and the environments. There are so many
different species, that it's sometimes difficult to tell them apart.
There are marsh, forest, sea, and prairie hawks. The environment where
your hawk is found, will tell you much about how it's energies are
likely to manifest in your life.
Even when people can't tell one species from another, they can usually
recognize it as a member of the hawk family. All hawks are impressive
and stir the imagination. Their hunting ability, eyesight, powerful
flight, and other behaviors are dynamic symbols.
In most raptors, the coloration of both sexes of the same species are
very similar. However, the female is usually the larger of the two.
This has much to do with the fact that the mother guards the nest. Many
hawks mate for life, the red-tailed hawk being one example. The length
of time that mated birds stay together is often determined by the
number of seasons spent raising the young.
An examination of specisic species and their behavior will reveal much.
For example, an osprey is sometimes refeered to as a fishhawk based on
it's primary diet. This species is often mistaken for an eagle (I think
that I've done this. PJ) because of it's nearly all white head, but
it's the only large hawk that is clear white underneath. It's nost
numerous in coastal regions, as if it's white breast reflects the white
foam of the waters where it hunts. Other examples are the Cooper's
hawk, the goshawk, and the sharp-skinned hawk who feed frequently. on
other birds. Although they will eat rodents and such, most of their
food is feathered. This reflects the old adage, you are what you eat.
This text doesn't examine every characteristic of each species due to
space considerations, but it does go into detail on the red-tailed
Hawk. The most nemerous member of the hawk family, it's named for the
distinctive tail feather coloration of the mature member of the
species. The mature birds also have darker eyes. (Should you get that
close :-) )
The red-tail is very symbolic. It has ties to kundalini energy. For
humans, it's associated with the base chakra, located in the tailbone
of coccyx. Those who have this totem will be working with kundalini. It
can also reflect that this bird will become a totem after the kundalini
energy is activated. Also that childhood visions are becomming
empowered and fulfilled or as you begin to move toward your soul
purpose more dynamically.
Red-tail is a member of the Buteo family. (Soaring hawks) The soaring
and gliding ability are part of what hawk can teach. Although a soarer,
it's most often seen on treetops and utility posts using it's keen
vision to search for prey. This is how hawk teaches you to fly at great
heights while keeping your feet on the ground.
Hawks are occasionally attacked by smaller birds. This is very
significant for those with this totem. It's teaching you that other
people who don't understand you or the varied uses of your creative
energy. They may attack yor ability to soar.
The red-tail is usually a permanent resident in an area, although it
may occasionally migrate. This reflects that hawk as a totem will be
with you permanently once it shows up.
Red-tail apparently mates for life. Both sexes help to care for the
young. 2 to 3 eggs are laid in the Spring. The parents are vigorous
defenders of the nest against any intruders. They cling to home
territories for years and can live in the wild for up to 14 years.
This 14 is significant. 14th card in Tarot (Major Arcana) is
temperence. This represents teaching of the higher expressions of
psychism and vision. Also in the development of Astral projection--new
flights out of body. It has ties to kundalini activation and it's
expression, and to to the archetypal forces that teach beauty and
harmony in moderations. It holds the key to higher levels of
conciousness.
Rising to the higher levels can bring rapid development of the psychic
energies. Red-tail helps us in balancing and using those senses
appropriately. It teaches balance that's necessary to discover your
true life purpose. If red-tail is your totem, then meditation on the
Temperance card will help you to use your creative energy to manifest
your soul purpose.
The red reflects the greater intensity of energy at play in your life
in the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual forces. Te bird is a
catalyst, stimulating hope and new ideas. It reflects a need for you to
open to the new or shows you ways to teach others to open as well.
To the Pueblo, red-tail was known as red eagle. It's feathers and
energies were used in healing and rain or water manifesting ceremonies.
Water, of course, the bringer of life in the desert and everywhere. To
the Ojibway, red-tail represented leadership, deliberation, and
foresight.
From the Medicine Card divination deck by Jamie Sams and David Carson;
"hawk is akin to Mercury, the messenger of the gods. hawk medicine
teaches you to be observant...Life is sending you signals." Red-tail
can spread it's wings very wide an can teach you to do the same with
your creative energies or to extend your vision of life.
Because of the strong energies (the intensified life-force) activated
by hawk totem, individuals with it must be careful in how they express
themselves. Just as a red-tail will tear off a poisonous snake's head
when preying on it, so too do you have the potential to tear apart
anyone or anything seen as an enemy. Your comments and actions may be
seen as akin to the hawk's beak and talons--strong and powerful and
with a capability to tear and/or kill.
red-tail feathering has 2 phases. Both are significant to those with
this totem. It's feathering is a little lighter in the spring and
darker in the winter. Lighter=more joyful or sociable, while darker can
reflect a time to be alone or a little withdrawn. The color phases can
help to guard one from blazing so brightly and intensely that you burn
yourself out.
The sky is the realm of the hawk. Through it's flight, it communicates
with humans and the great creator spirit. It awakens our visions and
inspires us to a creative life purpose.
That's Hawk. As always, taken from Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews.
Panther will happen. :-)
Bright Blessings,
PJ

| Wow, I was looking through Animal-Speak and your right Cindy. (Like
when are you not. :-) ) THere are no mentions of any primates as
totems at all. Just a thought. Primates (Apes, Chimps, Monkeys, Humans,
et al) are considered by many to be the highest form of animal. Maybe
you've got a monkey totem because with your studies and training and
behavior, you've become or are becoming a higher form of human. THe
next step as it were. Just a thought.
Bright Blessings,
PJ

Monkeys might be mentioned in something I have, but it is up at the
Lake. There is a book with my animal totem deck. I would think of
primates as family oriented, protective, and clever.

That's a nice thought, PJ, but given current circumstances in my life
involving a Gemini with a monkey mind, who was also born in the year
of the Monkey, I suspect that Jamie is far closer to the truth of the
matter. Thanks, Jamie...I needed that! (;^)
Any info you can dig up would be most appreciated, Serenity - thanks!

To the question of monkeys the lassie posed,
A sudden eruption! As my mind did doze!
A Gemini human: A monkey that speaks!
From him to her, bad powers did reek!
As pets, Jamie has them in disdain,
For, twas the ape that did drive him insane!
I say, "What do you expect from a species,
That likes to chatter and fling at you feces!!!
