856.1 | Second coming?... | JACOB::STANLEY | You can't let go, you can't hold on... | Tue Sep 13 1988 12:14 | 7 |
| I think it ended quite a while ago and people are just now starting to notice.
Actually, there are some religious groups who believe that 9/11-9/13 mark
the second coming of Christ. Maybe this is tied to what you heard. Their
has been some discussion of this in the Christian notes conference at
IOSG::CHRISTIAN.

| I'm not qualified to speak about any astrological basis to the
prediction, so I won't.
Since you give no details of why the "people at NASA" (who?
scientists? astronomers? botonists? administrators? janitors?)
are making the prediction it is difficult for me to say much
on that count either.
All I can say is that there has been nothing in the scientific
press in the last weeks and months that gives any hint of anything
that suddenly and precisely disasterous. No big comets or
asteroids. No super-extreme/unusual seismic activity. Nothing.
Closest I can think of is some unusually large sunspots -- but
not anywhere close to being of unheard of size or number. We are
on the upswing towards the Solar Maximum, and it promises to be
an especially active one so big sunspots are to be expected. The
Earth has presumably survived several million of these maxima.
Isn't it the least bit suspicious that this presumably cosmic
event should occur at such an arbitrary but convenient time as
sunset at the place determined by politics to be the international
site from which time is counted? Its like someone measuring the
distance between two mountain peaks accurately to inches and coming
out with an exact number of miles -- it could happen but its more
likely that the figures were fudged or invented.
All in all, I consider this thousands of times less likely than
the Nostradamus-interpretation prediction of the destruction of
California earlier this year, and I gave it no credence at all.
Your personal universe is much, much more likely to end today
by you being bit by a rattlesnake while crossing a city street
than that the Earth will end today for everyone. Unless you
worry alot about the former possibility, I wouldn't put any
worry into the latter either.
If anyone has more facts about the basis for the prediction I'll
be glad to comment on them if I am able.

it is their world that is going to end...not ours!

Here is something I wrote which should convey my feelings...
( Read into it anything you will )
Its my Life, After all
----------------------
As I stand here watching you,
My eyes begin to tear,
I think of all the loneliness
I've felt for all these years
Life is like a love song,
A beginning and an end,
Hey mister music man,
Can you play that one again
I've moved so many times,
In hopes to get ahead,
When my dreams become reality,
I'll finally rest my head
Life is like a sailboat,
Sailing cross the sea,
To some far destination,
Unknown to you and me
I almost threw it all away,
I felt there was no worth,
I stopped to smell the roses,
And touched a little earth
Life is like a sunset,
Floating cross the sky,
If you don't stop to watch it,
It just passes by
It felt a little funny,
At least it did back then,
I finally saw the answer,
I saw it in my friends.

| WELL...if you want MY opinion.......(even if you dont), here it
is:
I saw some (brain dead) man on T.V. one night on the news, I can't
recall the guys name or anything, but they had film clips of some
big speech with HUNDREDS of people there - the guy was talking about
the end of the world thing in September (this was in August) and
how there was only a few weeks of life "as we know it" left...on
& on...
They were selling tapes & reading material in the lobby and people
were just eatting it up - buying stuff left and right. The whole
thing made me absolutly sick to my stomach! How people like this
can be allowed as much publicity as they get I just don't know.
"Free speech" or not - I can't stand it. They should be locked
up. Can you imagine how many poor simple-minded people out there
who are easily "brainwashed" with this crap - who may have actually
SOLD all their belongings - or spent their savings - or worse yet
- ended their life - all because they actually believed this turd-head?
**This is simply MY opinion, thanks for letting me voice it here.
I'm sorry if I have offended anyone with it. This was not my
intention.**

856.13 | "Rapture by Midnight" | NEXUS::ENTLER | the Wizard | Tue Sep 13 1988 15:16 | 27 |
| RE: .0 NASA
Close but no banana!
The only tie to NASA is the calcualtions made by a NASA rocket
engineer Edgar C. Whisenant, who used mathemetical calcualtions
and biblical interpretations to pinpoint the event to the 48 hours
of this year's Jewish New Year -- 40 years and 120 days after Israel
became a nation on May 14, 1948.
The "Rapture" is expected to strike by tonight, according to
the book "88 Reasons Why The Rapture Will be in 1988", written by
this same NASA engineer.
I caught some religious program several weeks ago and they were
discussing this very book and its relationship to the Bible. They
were discussing different opinions and actually said that they believe
it was off by a year. So Party Hardy! You've got another year
before the "Rapture".
A STRONG POINT:
Actually, with all these calcualtions, etc. performed by a NASA
engineer on a computer, we all know that a computer's only as good
as it's makers/ programmers. And we all know that none of these
would ever make a mistake!

Re.12
Free speach is our most important right as human beings. It
is your right to express your opinion, and I support you on that.
My opinion is that if someone chooses to believe and follow
that person, he is charting his own course in life. If he chooses
to follow someone blindly, then he deserves what he gets. If someone
even goes so far as to end his life because of the situation, I
would not feel any sorrow for the person. Nature will follow her
own course, regardless of what we attempt to do. We have become
a nation that coddles its weak. But even with all our efforts,
nature continues to purge itself. If someone dies through stupidity,
nature is in effect purging bad genes from the gene pool.
I love life just as much as anyone else. I feel anguish as
much as anyone else when a life ends. Whether it was close to me
or not. But by denying free speech, we are in effect attempting
to take over for nature. People have a will of there own.
The strong survive, and I have no qualms with that.

I don't agree. We are not talking about responsibilities at
all. We are talking the laws of nature. The strong survive, whether
the strong that survive are right in what they do or not. I am
not here to judge someone elses actions, only my own. The person
who acts against the weak is just as sure that what they are doing
is right as someone who act for them. They may be ingorant by your
standards, but in their reality you could be the one to be viewed
as ignorant.
A Canadian citizen is an alien in our country, but we are an
alien in theirs. There is no right or wrong, only what we concieve
them to be. There is no such thing as "normal", abnormalty is

John and Bruce must have a very narrow view of what constitutes
positive thinking, in my opinion. This "Rapture" had nothing but
negative, fear components...we would all be dying and the end of
the world would be at hand. Only those who believed in whatever
the fear-mongers said we should believe in would be "saved."
I submit that though perhaps there were a few of these types who
jumped on the Harmonic Convergence bandwagon, for the most part,
those with cooler heads predicted new and positive beginnings...
the coming of a New Age...ON EARTH. To compare the two events is
simply illogical, except from the standpoint of no end to the
planet Earth (from those who "predicted" that.)

Oh, I don't know. I think there's a good deal of comparison to
be made between the latest Rapture scare and the Harmonic Convergence.
Both were predictions of the end of an age and the beginning of
a new one. Both were based on shoddy methods. Both got the horse-
laugh, not only from complete disbelievers outside their respective
communities, but also from a lot of "insiders." (Not ALL New Agers
or occultists or psychical researchers thought the Convergence was
plausible. You can look in IOSG::CHRISTIAN and see how little most
of the conservative Christian noters thought of the Rapture scare.)
Now, when the Harmonies failed to Converge, we began hearing a lot
about slow, gradual, unseen and untestable changes that "really"
started on the given date despite the lack of evidence. I wonder
if a tiny new denomination will show up claiming something apocalyptic
happened in the last few days, but we just failed to notice.

| I still think that people who buy in to "doom and gloom"
of whatever kind are simply selling out on a positive potential
that has no or little chance to manifest in that millieu. Whether
that's from initiators of the terms "Harmonic Convergence" or
"Rapture" or "soothsayers" or others who have "prophetic qualities."
I believe that we control our own reality and therefore do not
have to submit to the realities phrophesized by others...and I leave
a lot of holes here without offering proper substantiation.
But for all of those people who want a positive, happy, fun and
loving present/future, I say "shame" for allowing those who have
twisted concepts of reality to overcome their own optimisms. I
may very well fall into some volcanic chasm after which all of you
can sit around and say "tsk, tsk, he was wrong, and we were right"
but I will do my damnedest to have as much fun and to reach for
positive and brightly lit futures as I can possibly achieve. To

until after it was supposed to have happened. Sorry I missed all the
fun ;-). About comparing this to harmonic convergence. There is
quite a big difference. The 'rapture' was an event, something that was
supposed to have happened at a given moment. Harmonic convergence
was supposed to be an awakening kind of thing for those who were
'tuned in' or whatever. Some talked about physical happenings,
ie gloom & doom, but the actual stuff the convergence was made
of involved a beginning of a period of time, not an event in a
physical sense, the results of which won't be known for a number of
years to come - just changes along the way, making it a hard thing
to measure or validate.
