850.0. "photographed spirit" by SPGOPS::MARINO () Fri Sep 09 1988 11:42

Recently, a person I work with brought in a picture from a family
outing she attended about ten years ago. She asked us to look
at the picture closely. It was a picture of a woman sitting
in a lounge chair and another empty chair beside her. She told
us to look at the empty chair. Well I got goose pimples from
head to toe, because the reflection of the sun on the chair
was a shadow of a mans face. We each looked at the picture
and said the same thing. She told us that her brother had
died in July and the family outing was held September of the
same year. She said after they took the picture they couldn't
believe it, that reflection looked just like her brother.
A few nights ago, this person went to a medium, she had
her cards read and fortune told e.t.c. The medium told
her that she had troubled spirits that surrounded her. She
then took out the picture and showed it to the medium, the
medium dropped the picture and told her that the person
reflected in the chair was exactly like the figure she sees
as the troubled spirit. The medium then told her that it
was her brother and that she would have to contact him and
find out what is troubling him so that he can finally be
at peace. This person is pretty upset now, because she
really didn't want to hear that her brother wasn't at peace.
The whole thing is pretty strange. Has this happened to
other people. I never really thought about spirits one way
or the other, but after seeing that picture and really seeing
a face it makes me wonder.

I was fascinated by your note.

I do hope your friend has not let this upset her too much,
and that she is successful in contacting her brother and
finding out why he made this impromptu appearance in the
    photograph.

My mother's friend who lives in Odiham, Hampshire U.K., had
a VERY similar experience but was given/presumed a different
reason for the appearance of an extra face in a photograph.

The picture was taken I believe about five years ago, two
months after her mother-in-law had died a perfectly natural
death, and was of her and her husband in the wedding car
with their daughter (on whose Wedding Day it was taken).

Joy (my mother's friend) is visible in the front seat with
their daughter and her husband is sitting in the back seat
chatting to the bridegroom through the open window.

Next to him is the pale but distinct image of his mother
sitting on the back seat, handbag on her lap and looking
straight ahead of her. When it was developed they even
took the picture back to the developers to ask if it was
possible than one 'frame' of the film had become transposed
with another of the wedding and thus explain the presence
of Les (Joy's husband's) mother. They said no it was not,
and certainly not in the way the picture showed - the chance
to two photos being muddled together so well that the figure
was properly seated in the car on the other picture was
    impossible.

The only explanation Joy has found is that her daughter was
engaged when her grandmother died and the Les's mother
desperately wanted to go to the wedding but became increasingly
ill until she died as I said, two months before the day.

Perhaps she was 'allowed back' to see her grandaughter marry
just for that one day and didn't mean to come out in the
photos but was somehow 'caught' by the film.

A few years back while my friend was pregnant with her first
child, her mother died of cancer.

It was about a week after the funeral my friend went over to
her father's house to see how he was doing. Her baby was
due anytime. Her father asked her if he could take a photo
of her in the livingroom. He said so you can have a picture
to show your child what you looked like before they were born.

He took the picture with a Polaroid Camera. The kind that develops
in front of you. As the picture began to develop a womans face
came out in the corner of the photo. It was her mother.
