| Even the law of gravity is no longer sacred. A Washington Post
article last week described an experiment in Greenland which found
that gravity is not precisely constant.
Physicists bored a 1 mile deep hole in the ice pack, then lowered a
gravity meter into the hole. As expected, the 'weight' of the mass
decreased as it was lowered, but it decreased *too much*. If I recall,
the change was about 1/50th (2%) more than predicted if gravity were
constant.
Speculation as to cause center around two existing theories --
'gravity particles' or a 'fifth force'. The article mentioned that
this was not the first experiment to suggest a 'problem' with gravity,
but that it was the most accurate and incontrovertable.
