780.0. "Lost and Found" by UBOHUB::HOOD_S () Tue Jun 28 1988 13:00
Hello Friends,
I have just been shown this conference and have been fascinated
by the content of it.
I felt I must tell you about a wonderful thing that happened to
me last May (1986) after a year with Digital.
I used to work in the Field Servie Department here at Wimgrove House
and received many customer 'phone calls about various things. One
day, I answered a colleagues 'phone and had to deal with an angry
customer who had come through to the WRONG department and the one
he wanted when I tried to transfer him was ENGAGED. As a consequence,
I had to take his name and number in order for someone to call him
back. On hearing his name SPENCER HOOD, my heart felt as if it
had stopped. Years ago, as a curious seven or eight year old I
was told by my father about his sad family which due to divorces
and deaths had been broken up to the extent that he had 'lost' his
half brother when my father was about ten years old (he is now fifty
four). His half brother's name was - SPENCER HOOD. Unusual and
individual enough for me to recognise it fifteen years later during
this 'phone call.
I couldn't ask this man if he was my Uncle, from shock as well as
the fact that it was a complaint with which he was calling! I
therefore rang his company back, spoke to a very understanding
personnel lady and checked ages and dates with her. They tallied
correctly, and I left my number.
On reaching home, my 'phone was already ringing and a voice said
"Hello, I think you are my niece!" It was as if I knew from the
moment he said his name that it must be him and I had already
telephoned my Dad to tell him I thought I had found his brother
by accident, but he didn't believe it until he rang back.
My Dad and his brother met each other for the first time in all
those years on 21st July last year - my parents' Silver Wedding
Anniversary and everyone in my department thinks there must be
something very strange about me as this is not the first time someone
'lost' to me has homed in like this!
Has anyone else any similar experiences or any comments on this?
SANDY.

| WOW! I'm impressed !
The reunion must have been something. To say its a small world
would be trite, but there you have it. I wonder if perhaps similar
chance encounters don't happen more often, but with people whose
names aren't as distinctive ? I have known relatives with names
like McKinnon, and Walker. How many distant or not-so-distant relatives
have I met that I'm not aware of ? I don't know, but sometimes wonder
when I encounter a family name.
