779.0. "Communicating across the miles" by SUPER::REGNELL (Smile!--Payback is a MOTHER!) Mon Jun 27 1988 17:10

I am wondering if any of you have ever had experiences
similar to the following; or if you have any thoughts
         about the validity of it.

My sister and I have lived on opposite sides of the country
for over 25 years. I have seen her about 5 times in those
25 years, for as much as a week at a time. When she moved
away (I was 13, she was 19) we had a *strained* relationship
at best, and any closeness that we feel for each other
         now has developed *long-distance*.

What we do is communicate to each other without benefit
of modern technology. If I need to talk to her, I merely
concentrate for about 15 seconds and then go on about
my business. She will call me within 24 hours. If she
wants to talk to me, she does the same.

With her, I give her a headache. One that she knows is
me rather than her allergy. With me, I see a picture
of my sister in my mind. As soon as I acknowlege that
I have to call her, the image will fade. With her, she
has her headache until she calls. The intensity of the
*need* if you will, to communicate defines how necessary
         it is to call.

         Anyone else?

My wife and I have always had this "ability". It's not perfect
nor can we pass specific information. What we can do is one of us
just thinks of the other for a few minutes.
We became aware of it when she was pregnant with our first son.
At the time we were living temporarily in an appartment with no
refrigeration. We didn't even have a coffee maker. I used to get
up first (I still get up first) and go to a nearby coffee shop to
get coffee for me and cold milk for her. (to help decrease the effects
of morning sickness) On a number of occasions I'd have to pull our
old beat up VW over and hang my head out and vomit my guts out.
The first few times I'd come home after this to find Marie had just
finished throwing up herself. I never believed in sympathy pains
or the like before that but I was sick every morning for the complete
9 months. It only happened in the first pregnancy, the other two
didn't affect me. (except for the usual father surviving through
    pregnancy)
Even before we were married we could make each other think about
the other regardless of distance or time of day. We experimented
with this after we were married by calling the other (on the phone)
whenever we had a strong feeling about the other. With the exception of
distress nothing else could be be communicated except an awareness.

Marie had a bout with uterin cancer over a year ago and I could
tell when she was having an especially bad day while sitting here
in my office. There were times when I'd wake up in the middle of
the night worried sick about her and wanting to be able to be in
the hospital with her. The next day I'd find out that she had a
rough night. Thankfully she's since recovered but our strange
    method of communication continues.

Two years ago our youngest, then two, had wandered into the woods
in the back of our house (we live an hour west from 495, in the
middle of nowhere) When Marie realized that Ben was lost she paniced.
At about the same time I had a feeling of total terror and I felt
very strongly that Ben was in some sort of trouble. A half an hour
later everything was fine. Marie called me at work and told me
she had every kid in the neighborhood scouring the forest looking
for Ben. They found him at the edge of a thousand acre marsh crying

Marie and I don't get all goose bumps when this happens either.
We just except it. We don't bother to rationalize oe explain it.
It just is and that's just fine with us.

I might add that since she was a little girl Marie has had many
strange things happen to her. from precognitive dreams to instant
feelings about people close to her.

I was in Spain when this happened to me...
There were four of us sleeping in one room. One evening I woke
up from a horrible nightmare of people crawling out from under
rocks. As I lay awake not being able to return to sleep I heard
two of the other girls tossing and turning and one started crying.
In the morning we were talking and discovered that we had all
had the same nightmare and later learned that there had indeed
been a rock avalanche in the village some years before but we
were never able to discern if people had actually been killed
in the catastrophe which occured dow the road from where we
    were living.
I remember during the end of the dream I suddenly saw my sister
standing over me and I asked her "Lin, what on earth are you
doing here?" as I knew she was 3000 miles at home in Massachusettes.
When I got home I was telling Lin about the trip and the odd
incidents that occured there but had not described the nightmare
because it still shook me up. Then she said "nightmares? you want
to hear about a REAL nightmare. I woke up and screamed from this
one..and proceeded to describe in detail the same nightmare I
and three others had in Spain. I asked her if she knew when
she woke up, although she couldn't give me the day she could the
time which was 10 I recall checking my watch after it happened
to me which was about five - which made up for the time
    difference between the two continents.....!

I believe the term for the phenomenon in .2 is synchronicity however,
correct me if I am wrong. I would imagine that is a hard one to
study in that we don't all remember our dreams. Can anyone else
add to this? Has anyone else experienced this? I believe M. Scott
Peck briefly mentions this in The_Road_less_traveled.

As for communication over distances, I think it is common only rarely
recognized as anything other than a hunch. In my own family, my mother
can predict (she will inform my father) when one of us kids will be
calling (by telephone, folks ;). She often starts her phone calls
with, "I told your father you'd be calling tonight..." When this
happens for years, you begin giving more credence to telepathy.

I have often pondered whether or not contagion was not another
example of the belief in sickness being transmitted by thought
over distances to receptive minds (receptive meaning those not
protected against such lies). --but this leaves the bounds of this
    note.

re: .3

I think the term to use here is 'trans-personal' dreaming. It isn't
that uncommon, particularily to people that are close to each other
and results in shared dream experiences.

Synchronicity, a term coined by C.G. Jung, is defined as acausally
connected events. Meaning two or more events that appear as mere
conicidence but are connected at some other (unconscious) level.
I think there is separate topic on it.
